Ayrshire pupils making laughs on way to national joke telling competition final

Daily Record08-05-2025
Ayrshire pupils have been named among the finalists by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Three Ayrshire pupils have named as finalists in a national joke telling competition.
Saffron Barrett of Glenburn Primary in Prestwick, Freya McVie Branley of St Winning's Primary in Kilwinning and Craig Speirs of Shortlees Primary in Kilmarnock won their regional heats in the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists' (RCSLT) VoiceBox competition to reach the final.

With a joke that had judges in stitches, P1 Saffron, P7 Freya and P5 Craig now heads to the grand final at the Scottish Parliament on June 5.

In total, 32 of Scotland's funniest primary school pupils – one from each local authority – will compete for the title of VoiceBox Champion 2025.
Freya's joke which earned her a place in the final was: 'I walked into Primark, there was a bra on the floor. I stepped on it and fell over. It was a boobie trap.'
Saffron's joke was: 'There are 100 cows in the field – which one is going on holiday? The one with the wee calf.'
Craig's joke was: 'What did a pig say on a hot day? I'm bacon!'

The event will be hosted by Alison Johnstone, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, with Zara Janjua, BBC journalist and stand-up comedian, taking the mic as compère.
Now in its second year, VoiceBox launched on Blue Monday – the so-called "saddest day of the year" – with a very different energy, thanks to last year's winners from Cockenzie Primary in East Lothian.

Schools across Scotland have been submitting their funniest entries in a joyful celebration of confidence, creativity and communication.
Each pupil has already secured £100 worth of Collins Big Cat books for their school, and is in the running for the top prizes which include £500 of books for the winning school, £200 of books for second and third place plus, a £100 toy gift card for the top three finalists
Glenn Carter, head of RCSLT Scotland, said: 'We're incredibly proud of all the regional winners who've earned a place in the national final.

'VoiceBox is about much more than making people laugh. It's about highlighting the vital role that communication plays in every part of a child's life.
'Speech, language and communication, skills are the foundation for learning, social connection, mental wellbeing and future employment. Yet too many children still struggle without the support they need, often going unnoticed.

'Competitions like VoiceBox show just how powerful a child's voice can be when given a platform and why it's so important that we continue to invest in speech and language therapy to support children's communication.
'These children aren't just telling jokes. They're showing us how the ability to communicate can positively impact confidence, creativity and connection.'
Lizzi Jones, head of sales and marketing for HarperCollins Scotland, added: 'Supporting VoiceBox allows us to champion children's literacy and communication, all through the simple joy of telling a joke. We can't wait to hear all the jokes at Holyrood.'

Biffy Clyro show 50 Cent how it's done Glasgow TRNSMT 2025

I couldn't help but compare the headline set to that of 50 Cent - both acts are legends in their own right and have 20+ years in the game. But Biffy blew Fiddy completely out of the water and the non-existent roof off of Glasgow Green. You could blame it on the home advantage, but the Ayrshire-born trio were just undeniably better. (Image: LESLEY MARTIN) READ MORE: LIVE Surprises at Saturday TRNSMT with secret set and Jake Bugg Where 50 Cent had hype men and a stop-start storyline of a show that was meant to cement his legacy, but fell a bit flat. Biffy just gave the crowd a bang for their buck blasting of the best of their back catalogue. And the crowd lapped up every riff and lyric, showing more energy in Biffy's opener than the rapper managed to squeeze out of them with his biggest hit, In Da Club. I've seen Biffy Clyro more times than I can remember - tonight's headline at TRNSMT 2025 was something special. The crowds have been baked in unrelenting heat and sunshine at the warmest ever year of the festival. However, Biffy turned the temperature up a further notch from the outset. Chants of 'Biffy, Biffy, Biffy f***g Clyro' and 'Mon the Biff' built up before they took to the stage. The band walked out to one of the biggest cheers of the day - frontman Simon Neil was decked out in a black kilt. The Captain opened the blistering set and announced the one thing the TRNSMT crowd hoped - the Biff were back. 'Let's hear you Glasgow' was met with easily the loudest sing-along of the weekend yet and proved that the Biff had never actually left. (Image: LESLEY MARTIN) READ MORE: I took £20 to TRNSMT 2025 and got less than I hoped for READ MORE: I asked the TRNSMT 2025 crowd for outfit advice - their responses were bold That Golden Rule continued the revisit to Only Revolutions as the band flexed their immense back catalogue. Simon gushed: 'Glasgow, we've missed you - I hope you're all ready for some serious singing tonight, in Costa Del Glasgow.' The stage presence and production are of top quality and only surpassed by the musicianship on display. Who's Got A Match set the crowd alight as Simon swung a light around his head maniacally, before Biblical was belted out at deafening, biblical, volume by the crowd. Rearrange brought the dynamic into a slower pace, but the sing-along continued, heralded by the band calling the crowd 'angels'. Wolves Of Winter dropped like an atomic bomb as red streamers flew into the crowd. Before Tiny Indoor Fireworks got just as good a reception and flowed into the new release A Little Love. The new tune is them at their bombastic best as Simon declared, 'Really, we wanna show you a shit ton of love.' Born On A Horse returned Biffy Clyro to their past albums and had the crowd singing guitar riffs back to them - once a staple of Scottish festivals but rare at this TRNSMT. 'This one goes out to all our fellow gingers," jokes red-haired bassist James before they kicked into Space. Then the inevitable happened - they got topless for Different People and they launched into Hunger In Your Haunt from the 2021 album The Myth Of The Happily Ever After. 'We've been excited about playing this show since we found out last year so thanks very much for being with us," admits Simon. Mountains was just another example of the band showing off the depth of their sound, and the hit turned the volume knob up to 11. Stingin' Belle was them at their bombarding best, and Simon howled like the last 20-odd years had taken no toll on his voice. A bagpiper appeared for the prog-rock build-up to finish the song as the band sweatily went off stage. Coming back out on his own, Simon started the encore with Machines, which was a beautiful moment as the crowd joined in with every word. Living Is A Problem Cos Everything Dies from the album Puzzle saw them be their playful best. Anf finale Many Of Horror saw fireworks fly into the East End sky - cementing yet another phenomenal Biffy show. They left the stage to a wall of feedback and the scream 'We are BIFFY F***N' CLYRO!' The best in the business. (Biff-ness).

Iconic Scots kids' TV host dies aged 99 as devastated family pay tribute

SHOWBIZ legend Glen Michael died peacefully at home this week - just two months after celebrating his 99th birthday. Generations of Scots grew up with Glen who fronted Cartoon Cavalcade every Sunday on STV from 1966 to 1992. 3 3 In an interview with The Scottish Sun shortly before turning 99, Glen proudly boasted how he had just renewed his driving licence, joking: 'It's valid until I'm 101 — at this rate I may even outlive my car.' Glen passed away at his cottage his Ayrshire, where he lived alone since the loss of wife Beryl a decade ago. He leaves behind his two adult children, former journalist Yonnie, 74, who is now a guide at King Charles's Dumfries House, and award-winning film editor son Chris Buckland, 66, who has worked on high profile shows including Outlander, as well as five grandchildren. Yonnie said: 'Dad died peacefully at home, and not in hospital, which is what he wanted. 'He had people beside him and he just literally took a deep breath and passed away. 'Dad had been determined to make it to 100, as he wanted his telegram from the King, but sadly it wasn't to be. 'But he was still driving until six weeks before falling ill and had also filmed a video for the Veterans charity Erskine in his back garden, which he did in one take. He was a performer to the end.' Bobby Hain, MD Audience, at STV said: 'We are deeply saddened to hear that Glen Michael has passed away. "Glen was a wonderful performer and personality and we know that many viewers will have very fond memories of him. "He was an STV legend, with Glen Michael's Cavalcade a particular favourite for children across Scotland during its 26 year run. "Our thoughts are with his family at this time and we send them our deepest condolences.'

Glasgow to spotlight Gaelic language at Royal National Mòd

Royal National Mòd, which was founded in Oban in 1891, is an event that focuses on celebrating Gaelic linguistic and cultural heritage while providing opportunities for people of all ages to perform in a range of competitive disciplines including Gaelic music and song, highland dancing, instrumental, drama, sport and literature. During last week's full council meeting, Bailie Seonad Hoy asked following the Scottish Parliament's agreement of the Scottish Languages Bill if the administration would be updating the council's Gaelic language plan and introducing a Scots language plan. Councillor Greg Hepburn said that while the council monitors and prepares to review the Gaelic language plan, there were no immediate proposals to introduce a Scots language plan. He said: 'Glasgow plays a vital role in the preservation and promotion of the Gaelic language with the largest number of Gaelic speakers outside the highlands and islands. 'Gaelic is a living language that enriches the city's educational, cultural and community life from Gaelic education medium work to the work of organisations like Akhilorin and the Gaelic Books council. READ MORE: Update provided on new Gaelic school to open in Glasgow next year 'The language contributes to Glasgow's diverse civic identity. This commitment will be further highlighted when Glasgow hosts the Royal National Mod from October 9 to 17, 2026. 'It's a major celebration of Gaelic language and culture and will bring thousands of visitors and participants to the city and offer a platform to showcase Glasgow's vibrant Gaelic community. 'The council's Gaelic language plan will be updated in 2026 as part of its mid-point review and this will allow for reflection and progress and renewed engagement with communities to strengthen Gaelic development across the city. 'At the same time, the council recognises the importance of supporting the Scots language. While there are no immediate plans to introduce the Scots language plan, the council is carefully considering the implications of forthcoming legislation. 'This includes evaluation on how best to align resources and delivery mechanisms to ensure future plans are meaningful and achievable. 'Engagement with key partners will be central to shaping a thoughtful and inclusive approach to language planning in Glasgow.'
