Restoration rejuvenates iconic Gaudi house in Barcelona
Previous refurbishments, changes of owner and the turbulent period marked by Spain's 1936-1939 civil war had taken their toll on the unique building completed in 1906.
A team of architects, historians and artisans spent more than a year repairing the bright mosaics and restoring the original cream-coloured hue to the blackened curvy balcony bars.
The result is "the most similar to 1906 that we have been able to achieve with today's technology", Xavier Villanueva, the chief architect and official in charge of the works, told AFP.
In the courtyard, the pergola replicates a parabola shape and more than 85,000 pieces make up the paving, "hand made one by one, as it was originally", Villanueva said.
The painstaking task meant the team "carried out a lot of analyses in several university laboratories, many prospections, we have lots of documentary information", he said.
The restoration cost 3.5 million euros ($4 million), according to Casa Batllo, which is in a fashionable neighbourhood of Barcelona frequented by the city's bourgeoisie and wealthy industrialists in the early 20th century.
A UNESCO-listed site since 2005, Casa Batllo welcomed 1.9 million visitors last year, making it one of the most popular attractions in a city known as a global tourism magnet.

At least 34 bodies have been recovered and another 11 people have been rescued. (AFP/Getty Images via CNN Newsource) In an interview with state media outlet Vietnamnet , a 64-year-old diver at the scene said that much of the ship's passenger area had been searched. The cockpit and engine room, however, are stuck in mud, making them harder to reach. "As of now, I am certain there are no more bodies in the passenger cabin," said diver Đinh Khắc Giông. "I only worry that some bodies may have drifted outside." VN Express reported that the ship, called the Wonder Sea, was caught in a storm around 1.30 pm local time (2.30am ET), which caused it to capsize. It then lost GPS signal, according to the outlet, which cited the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee. The navy, border guards, police and port authorities – along with 27 boats and two rescue craft – were mobilised to the scene, VN Express reported, adding that heavy rain and limited visibility due to nightfall were making rescue operations difficult. Most of the passengers were from the Vietnamese capital Hanoi and traveling as families, according to VN Express, which reported the eldest passenger as 53 and the youngest as just 3. Over 20 children were on board, VN Express said. Citing the director of a local hospital, the outlet reported that a 10-year-old boy is in stable condition after suffering multiple injuries. It also reported a 14-year-old boy survived after being trapped inside the ship's sunken cabin for four hours, citing eyewitness and deputy head of the Ha Long Cruise Ship Association, Bui Cong Hoan. "I have lost contact with my son, my husband and my friend's whole family," Dang told VTV, according to a translation published by Reuters. "What I am asking now is for everyone to speed up the rescue mission, to save all of them," Dang added. "Please don't let anyone behind on that boat. There is so little air left, there is a small chance of surviving." The capsize reportedly happened near the Dau Go Cave – one of the largest in the bay. Halong Bay is a popular tourist hotspot and a UNESCO world heritage site comprising of about 1600 limestone islands and islets. World vietnam Boating rescue CONTACT US

Australian beach crowned world's best in prestigious list
#14 – Temae Beach, French Polynesia: Surrounded by coral and hundreds of species of fish, this is exactly what you think when of the South Pacific region. Photo: istock #13 – Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, Spain: The stunning Canary Islands beach has over 3 million people per year visit it. The perfect little bay is known for its warm waters and brilliant golden sands. Photo: istock #12 – Luskentyre Beach, Scotland: Again, not really the place you'd think you'd find one of the best beaches in the world but the Outer Hebrides location is clearly brilliant. It hardly looks like it's from Scotland but the location means it's not often it's fit enough for swimming. Photo: istock #11 – Seven Mile Beach, Cayman Islands: While it's not quite seven miles long (it's actually 6.3 miles or 10kms long) it's a jawdroppingly beautiful beach. Photo: istock #10 – White Beach, Philippines: While Boracay Island has incredible beaches, White Beach is a step above. The white powdery sand is simply lovely, particularly with the backdrop of palm trees and jungle right on its doorstep. Photo: istock #9 – Sandy Lane Beach, Barbados: Again, if you haven't been convinced by the Caribbean's beauty, here is yet another perfect example. It's no surprise so many hotels and wealthy locals live right nearby. Photo: istock #8 – White Sand Beach, Thailand: Found on the western coast of the island of Koh Chang, the beach is far quieter than the big tourist beaches in Koh Samui and Phuket but the titular white sand is pretty amazing. Photo: TripAdvisor #7 – Le Morne Beach, Mauritius: The African nation of Mauritius is largely known because of its beaches. Le Morne Beach shows exactly why. Photo: istock #6 – Starfish (Sao) Beach, Vietnam: Officially called Sao Beach, it's better known for the starfish that live in the waters surrounding the bay. Crystal clear waters, and coral reefs make this a snorkeller's delight. Photo: istock #5 – Plage de Notre Dame, Porquerolles, France: On the island of Porquerolles, Plage de Notre Dame is a rare gem. It's secluded, separate from more popular islands and about as relaxing as it gets. Photo: istock #4 – Reethi Beach, Maldives: I mean just look at it. The Reethi resort in the northeast region of Baa Atoll is accessible through seaplane or speedboat but is undeniably stunning. Photo: Supplied #3 – Ksamil Beach, Albania: The bronze medal is going to a bit of a left field but breathtakingly stunning Ksamil Beach. While Albania may not be the top of your travel list, the southwestern gem of Ksamil is known as the "Maldives of Europe" and you can see why. Photo: istock #2 – Anse Source D'Argent, Seychelles: For the silver, it's a bit more traditional with Anse Source D'Argent in the Seychelles lining up on the second step of the podium. Famous for its striking granite boulders and clear, shallow waters, the beach attracts photographers and beachgoers alike, yet its spacious layout ensures a peaceful, serene atmosphere. Picture: iStock #1 – Whitehaven Beach, Queensland, Australia: But seriously, who are we kidding? It had to be an Aussie beach to top the list – it's almost unfair to the rest of the world! As part of the Whitsundays, Whitehaven Beach regularly tops lists like this and with its glistening white 98 per cent silica sands, it's just indescribably beautiful. Photo: istock

Billionaire's luxury holiday disrupted after Greek villa robbed
An extravagant European holiday has taken an unfortunate turn for Perth billionaire Laurence Escalante after thieves reportedly broke into his villa on the Greek island of Mykonos, making off with a haul of high-end goods worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The break-in reportedly occurred on Mr Escalante's first night on the island, with luxury watches, designer clothing, and cash among the stolen items, according to the Daily Mail. The 42-year-old founder of Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW) had been documenting his lavish summer escape on Instagram, sharing images of sun-soaked days aboard a mega yacht and nights partying in hotspots across the French Riviera and Greek Islands. He was also reportedly spotted at Scorpios Beach Club wearing a Richard Mille x Pharrell watch said to be worth about $1m. Mr Escalante, a father of four, has built a tech empire from humble beginnings. VGW is valued at more than $6bn, and his personal net worth is estimated at $4.37bn thanks to his majority stake. VGW is best known for its internet phenomenon Chumba Casino, with most business coming from the US. In a recent interview with The Australian, Mr Escalante reflected on his rise. 'I'm just a kid from Perth with immigrant parents who grew up, had an idea, invented something and kept trying,' he said. 'This is my fourth or fifth business. I'm just like a lot of other people, having a crack.'
