Restoration rejuvenates iconic Gaudi house in Barcelona
Previous refurbishments, changes of owner and the turbulent period marked by Spain's 1936-1939 civil war had taken their toll on the unique building completed in 1906.
A team of architects, historians and artisans spent more than a year repairing the bright mosaics and restoring the original cream-coloured hue to the blackened curvy balcony bars.
The result is "the most similar to 1906 that we have been able to achieve with today's technology", Xavier Villanueva, the chief architect and official in charge of the works, told AFP.
In the courtyard, the pergola replicates a parabola shape and more than 85,000 pieces make up the paving, "hand made one by one, as it was originally", Villanueva said.
The painstaking task meant the team "carried out a lot of analyses in several university laboratories, many prospections, we have lots of documentary information", he said.
The restoration cost 3.5 million euros ($4 million), according to Casa Batllo, which is in a fashionable neighbourhood of Barcelona frequented by the city's bourgeoisie and wealthy industrialists in the early 20th century.
A UNESCO-listed site since 2005, Casa Batllo welcomed 1.9 million visitors last year, making it one of the most popular attractions in a city known as a global tourism magnet.

Rescuers search for survivors after tourist boat capsizes killing dozens in Vietnam

The cockpit and engine room, however, are stuck in mud, making them harder to reach. "As of now, I am certain there are no more bodies in the passenger cabin," said diver Đinh Khắc Giông. "I only worry that some bodies may have drifted outside." VN Express reported that the ship, called the Wonder Sea, was caught in a storm around 1.30 pm local time (2.30am ET), which caused it to capsize. It then lost GPS signal, according to the outlet, which cited the Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee. The navy, border guards, police and port authorities – along with 27 boats and two rescue craft – were mobilised to the scene, VN Express reported, adding that heavy rain and limited visibility due to nightfall were making rescue operations difficult. Most of the passengers were from the Vietnamese capital Hanoi and traveling as families, according to VN Express, which reported the eldest passenger as 53 and the youngest as just 3. Over 20 children were on board, VN Express said. Citing the director of a local hospital, the outlet reported that a 10-year-old boy is in stable condition after suffering multiple injuries. It also reported a 14-year-old boy survived after being trapped inside the ship's sunken cabin for four hours, citing eyewitness and deputy head of the Ha Long Cruise Ship Association, Bui Cong Hoan. Billionaire's luxury holiday disrupted after Greek villa robbed
An extravagant European holiday has taken an unfortunate turn for Perth billionaire Laurence Escalante after thieves reportedly broke into his villa on the Greek island of Mykonos, making off with a haul of high-end goods worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The break-in reportedly occurred on Mr Escalante's first night on the island, with luxury watches, designer clothing, and cash among the stolen items, according to the Daily Mail. The 42-year-old founder of Virtual Gaming Worlds (VGW) had been documenting his lavish summer escape on Instagram, sharing images of sun-soaked days aboard a mega yacht and nights partying in hotspots across the French Riviera and Greek Islands. He was also reportedly spotted at Scorpios Beach Club wearing a Richard Mille x Pharrell watch said to be worth about $1m. Mr Escalante, a father of four, has built a tech empire from humble beginnings. VGW is valued at more than $6bn, and his personal net worth is estimated at $4.37bn thanks to his majority stake. VGW is best known for its internet phenomenon Chumba Casino, with most business coming from the US. In a recent interview with The Australian, Mr Escalante reflected on his rise. 'I'm just a kid from Perth with immigrant parents who grew up, had an idea, invented something and kept trying,' he said. 'This is my fourth or fifth business. I'm just like a lot of other people, having a crack.'
