After CM rap on ‘long delayed' project, GDA says ready to take over cricket stadium project

Ghaziabad: In the works since 2014, the state's plan to build an international cricket stadium in Ghaziabad is likely to finally see progress after chief minister Yogi Adityanath's intervention. Stuck primarily due to an impasse over FAR (floor area ratio) between UP Cricket Association and GDA, the 55,000-seater stadium is one of NCR's most delayed projects. Last week, after instructions from the CM to expedite work, GDA said it is ready to take over the Rs 450-crore project within 15 days. It has, so far, been playing a facilitator's role to UP Cricket Association (UPCA). "On June 26, the CM, while addressing the press in Ghaziabad's Mansarovar Bhawan, said BCCI wanted to make a cricket stadium in Ghaziabad, but due to some reasons, it has not happened. Subsequently, GDA was directed to acquire land, complete the stadium and manage it too," GDA vice chairperson Atul Vats told TOI. "After a series of meetings with the UPCA's stadium committee convenor, Rakesh Mishra, it was decided GDA will take up the project now. " You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida The international stadium was conceived in 2014, and over the years, UPCA and BCCI purchased land from farmers with Ghaziabad Development Authority facilitating the deals. In 2019, CM Yogi Adityanath performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the stadium. There was almost no progress till last March, when BCCI's Rajeev Shukla and former Ghaziabad MP VK Singh laid a foundation stone for the project. Naresh Chand, a Morti farmer whose land was acquired for the project, said, "Land was purchased from us at a rate of Rs 46 lakh per square yard. Revenue records show the land will be used for a cricket stadium. We had hoped that once ready, the cricket stadium would encourage youths to take up the sport and push local businesses too. But after so many years, the land lies unutilised." According to Vats, the construction was delayed as UPCA and GDA sparred over FAR—the built-up area to be allowed—and land use. According to the initial plan, the stadium was to come up on 31 acres. Of this, a 23-acre area was earmarked for the construction of the stadium and the rest was to be used for commercial activities. "As per GDA's building bylaws, the permissible FAR for land under the recreational green category is 0.1, but UPCA wanted a higher built-up area of 1.2 and 1.5, which is typically allocated for land under mixed use category. It is for the state govt to alter land use categories," Vats said, adding that a proposal to change land use category could not be sent to the state govt over the years pending the sale deeds of the 31 acres acquired for the project. Mishra, meanwhile, told TOI that they apprised GDA about issues that were holding up the project. "As of today, we can only say that UPCA can still develop the stadium, provided the issues are addressed," he said.

Clamour for Lord's tickets as Gill & Co. crushes England in Edgbaston

Kolkata: The Indian team's victory at Edgbaston on Sunday fuelled a rush among Kolkata travellers in England and city cricket fans to catch the Lord's Test from July 10. Travel agents say they have been receiving calls for a last-minute trip, while those already in the UK are altering their travel plans to accommodate a visit to London during the match. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As Shubhman Gill and his team pulled off a spectacular win against England, levelling the series 1-1, Kolkata cricket fan Mahesh Punjabi and his group of 11 friends started regrouping to arrange a quick trip to England. "We were supposed to travel to the UK last week to watch Wimbledon, but it got cancelled. Initially, we were not interested in the India-England series since the Men in Blue were without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and we believed there wouldn't be a real contest. But the way Gill's young team outplayed England made us rethink. It could be difficult, but we are still planning a dash to Lord's by July 10-11," said Punjabi. Punjabi has been to Australia, Dubai, England, the US, West Indies, and South Africa to watch the Men in Blue in action with his friends, who call themselves 'The 12th Man'. Gill's record-breaking knocks and Akash Deep's Sunday heroics reignited interest in the series, which could lead many, now in England for vacation and to visit family and friends, to try and grab a Lord's ticket, said Manav Soni of the Travel Agents Association of India. Kolkata student Vikram Tejwani, who studies in Scotland, has decided to travel to England after India's stellar performance in the second Test. "I have planned to watch the Lord's Test from the stands with my friends," he said. On the website Viagogo, the price of a Lord's Test ticket ranges between Rs 23,421 and Rs 28,443. The site is still offering 261 tickets for the first day. The win sparked off a demand for Lord's Test tickets among fans, especially those who are already in England, said Anil Punjabi, committee member of the Travel Agents' Federation of India (TAFI). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The interest level has suddenly gone up after India showed that they are good enough to win the series. Watching a match at Lord's is always the perfect icing on a London visit, especially for cricket lovers. We have started receiving requests for tickets from those who travelled through my agency," said Punjabi. Thousands from Kolkata travel to England for vacation and to visit family and friends during May-June, said Soni. "At least a thousand have travelled to watch the Test matches. The Lord's Test is always a big attraction, and we have been receiving requests for tickets. Now, with India staging a comeback, those already in the UK are altering plans to accommodate a trip to London and bet at the Lord's. This summer will be a big Indian one in England, and if the team plays well, there will be late travellers, too," said Soni.

State pulls out of Pro Govinda League even as prize amount reaches record Rs 1.5 crore

Mumbai: Sixteen local govinda teams bearing names like Nagpur Ninjas, Lucknow Panthers and Surat Titans will bid for cash prizes worth Rs 1.5 crore during this year's dahi handi festival, thanks to an IPL style bid by owners from different parts of India. However, the Maharashtra govt will no longer co-host or sponsor the event as it did during the previous two years. The organiser, Pro Govinda League, has announced its highest ever prize amount of Rs 1.5 crore for winning teams this season. The championship will be held at the NSCI Dome on Aug 7, 8 and 9. On July 5, a competitive auction was held wherein 16 govinda 'pathaks' were acquired by various team owners. Pro Govinda League was started by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik in Thane in 2018. In 2023-24 the state govt had sponsored the event during his party peer Eknath Shinde 's tenure as chief minister. This year that partnership has ended. Organisers say the move is not linked to having a BJP CM in Devendra Fadnavis. But we have managed to get more private sponsors and telecast partners. We held an auction for 16 teams and have signed a three-year contract with the players and franchisees.
