Maria Grazia Chiuri Leaves Dior After Nine Years, What's Next For The Luxury Brand?
Last Updated:
After nine years, Maria Grazia Chiuri has stepped down from her role as the Creative Director at Dior. The French luxury fashion house has not announced a successor yet.
French luxury fashion house Christian Dior's artistic director of womenswear Maria Grazia Chiuri has officially stepped down after nine years. Her departure comes months after industry speculation. She ended her tenure at Dior with a grand fashion show that was held at the historic Villa Albani Torlonia in Rome.
Taking to her Instagram, Maria Grazia Chiuri reflected on her nine-year tenure at Dior. She penned a note on her departure. She wrote, 'After nine years, I am leaving @dior, delighted to have been given this extraordinary opportunity. I would like to thank Monsieur Arnault for placing his trust in me and Delphine for her support. I am particularly grateful for the work accomplished by my teams and the ateliers. Their talent and expertise allowed me to realise my vision of committed women's fashion, in close dialogue with several generations of female artists. Together, we have written a remarkable and impactful chapter of which I am immensely proud."
Take a look at the note shared by Maria here.
Maria took the creative helm at Dior in 2016 after her time at Valentino. She played a pivotal role in reshaping the house's image and offerings to better align with the lives of contemporary women. Under her direction, Dior diversified its accessories portfolio, moving beyond its long-standing dependence on the Lady Dior handbag. New icons such as the Book Tote and the Bobby Camera Bag emerged, alongside revived seasonal editions of the Saddle Bag, originally designed by John Galliano. Her creative vision extended well beyond clothing. Her shows, often held in evocative global settings like India and Mexico, celebrated artisanal craftsmanship and wove in strong feminist messaging. From the soft tailoring that subtly challenged traditional corsets to bold declarations like the 'We Should All Be Feminists' T-shirt, her collections championed a thoughtful blend of beauty and advocacy.

While the brand has not officially announced its new creative director, Reuters mentioned that Jonathan Anderson is widely speculated to be the frontrunner to succeed Maria. Best known for his transformative work at Loewe, he is expected to debut as the brand's menswear artistic director on June 27 at the Paris Fashion Week.
This transition comes at a time when the luxury fashion industry is grappling with a global slowdown, prompting a wave of creative changes at some of its most storied houses, including Chanel, Gucci, and Balenciaga. While Chiuri's next chapter remains under wraps, she continues to invest in the arts. Currently, she is dedicating her efforts to restoring Rome's Teatro della Cometa, a historic 233-seat theatre she acquired in 2020, signalling her enduring commitment to culture and craftsmanship beyond the runway.

'Kisses yes, Bezos no': Protests erupt in Venice over Bezos wedding bash
Hundreds of protesters marched through Venice's central streets Saturday to say No to billionaire Jeff Bezos, his bride and their much-awaited wedding extravaganza, which reached its third and final day amid celebrity-crowded parties and the outcries of tired residents. On Friday, the world's fourth-richest man and his bride Lauren Sanchez Bezos tied the knot during a private ceremony with around 200 celebrity guests on the secluded island of San Giorgio. The wedding, however, angered many Venetians, with some activists protesting it as an exploitation of the city by the billionaire Bezos, while ordinary residents suffer from overtourism, high housing costs and the constant threat of climate-induced flooding. As the two newlyweds prepared for the final party Saturday evening, hundreds of Venetians and protesters from across Italy filled Venice's tiny streets with colourful banners reading Kisses Yes, Bezos No and No Bezos, no War". The demonstration contrasted with the expensive wedding bonanza, seen by critics as an affront to the lagoon city's fragile environment and its citizens, overwhelmed by throngs of tourists. We are here to continue ruining the plans of these rich people, who accumulate money by exploiting many other people while the conditions of this city remain precarious, Martina Vergnano, one of the demonstrators, said. The protest organisers claimed a victory after Saturday's wedding party, which was initially to be held in central Venice but which they said was later moved to a former medieval shipyard, the Arsenale. Bezos donated 1 million euros (USD 1.17 million) each to three environmental research organisations working to preserve Venice, according to Corila, the Venetian environmental research association. But many protesters blasted the move as a clear attempt to appease angry residents. We want a free Venice, which is finally dedicated to its citizens. Those donations are just a misery and only aimed at clearing Bezos' conscience, Flavio Cogo, a Venetian activist who joined Saturday's protest, said. Details of the exclusive wedding ceremony Friday night were a closely guarded secret, until Sanchez Bezos posted to Instagram a photo of herself beaming in a white gown as she stood alongside a tuxedo-clad Bezos. Athletes, celebrities, influencers and business leaders converged to revel in extravagance that was as much a testament to the couple's love as to their extraordinary wealth. The star-studded guest list included Oprah Winfrey and NFL great Tom Brady, along with Hollywood stars Leonardo Di Caprio and Orlando Bloom, tech entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates and top socialites, including the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, and their three children also joined the celebrations. The bride and groom stayed at the Aman Venice hotel on the Grand Canal, where Bezos posed for photos and Sanchez Bezos blew kisses to the press. The planet is burning but don't worry, here's the list of the 27 dresses of Lauren Sanchez, one protest slogan read, a reference to the bride's reported wedding weekend wardrobe. It featured a mermaid-lined wedding gown by Dolce and Gabbana and other Dolce Vita-inspired looks by Italian designers, including Schiaparelli and Bottega Veneta. The city administration has strongly defended the nuptials as in keeping with Venice's tradition as an open city that has welcomed popes, emperors and ordinary visitors alike for centuries.

3rd public display ever for rare Dali etchings at Victoria Memorial Hall
1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: The Victoria Memorial Hall has put on display two colour etchings of Salvador Dali, the only originals of the Spanish Catalan surrealist master that any museum or gallery in India possesses. The twin Dali works were among 83 original drawings, etchings, lithographs, and opaque watercolours that the New York-based Kolkata-born artist Bimal Banerjee had donated to VMH authorities in 1990. The etchings in colour are on copper plates, printed on Japanese rice paper, and signed by the artist in pencil. This is only the third time that they are being displayed in public. The two previous occasions were in 1993 and 2014. The exhibition is currently drawing art lovers and will be on till the end of July. "The two untitled colour etchings of the 'Macbeth Series' signed by Dali have been displayed in the central hall to celebrate the enduring legacy of museums and the genius of one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century," Victoria Memorial Hall secretary and curator-in-charge Anurag Kumar told TOI. Banerjee, an accomplished artist, told TOI in 2014 that Dali presented him with the etchings. He said he donated the works to VMH to ensure that budding artists could get a chance to view original masterpieces by modern European masters.
