KUALA LUMPUR : The heatwave gripping the nation is more than just a matter of discomfort – it poses a real threat to public health.
Last week, the meteorological department issued Level 1 heatwave alerts – triggered when maximum daily temperatures range between 35°C and 37°C – for six areas nationwide.
The heat is largely attributed to the southwest monsoon, which typically brings drier weather and intense heat. These conditions are expected to last until September.
Extreme heat can quickly lead to a range of health issues, especially when the body's core temperature rises above 40°C. At that point, vital organs begin to suffer.
Recognising early symptoms and responding quickly is crucial. Among the first signs is heat rash or prickly heat, an itchy red irritation caused when sweat ducts become blocked.
Heat cramps, on the other hand, result from salt and fluid loss due to excessive sweating, causing painful muscle spasms, often during or after strenuous activity.
If the heat strain continues, it can lead to heat exhaustion – the body's way of signalling dehydration and salt depletion. Symptoms include nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, excessive thirst, and heavy sweating.
Left untreated, this can escalate into heat stroke, a life-threatening emergency in which the body loses its ability to cool down. Warning signs include confusion, unconsciousness, and seizures. Unlike the earlier stages, sweating may stop entirely.
What to do in an emergency
Prompt action can save lives. Here's what you can do if someone shows early signs of heat-related illness.

The Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said Sarawak is building a full medical ecosystem that includes hospital services, research, and high-tech medical manufacturing — especially in burn and wound care. 'Service is important — don't get me wrong. But service alone is not enough. You must do research. Even if the idea seems small, even if it comes from the Jungle of Borneo, it's still an idea — and it matters,' he said in his opening speech at the 5th International Burn and Wound Conference 2025 here today. He urged nurses, paramedics, and doctors in Sarawak to actively contribute to research efforts to improve the standard of care, particularly in burn and wound management. 'Whether you're a nurse, paramedic, or doctor, you must understand that research is just as important as clinical work. And if the opportunity comes, we must seize it,' he said. Speaking to reporters later, Dr Sim said burn injuries remain a critical and life-altering issue in Sarawak, particularly due to industrial explosions and house fires. 'Burns are not only life-threatening but also life-altering. After a burn injury, patients require extensive rehabilitation due to complications like skin contractures — it's a very long journey. 'And whether we like it or not, burns will always be a risk — whether from house fires or, in our case, incidents in the oil and gas and chemical industries,' he said. He stressed the importance of staying up to date with the latest technology and best practices in burn and wound care, adding that the conference was a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration. On wound care, Dr Sim said the issue was even more pressing in Sarawak due to the high rate of diabetes-related complications. 'Almost every week, there is someone in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) who has a leg amputated because of diabetic ulcers that cannot heal. The infection becomes so serious it threatens the whole body, so they have to amputate,' he said. This creates not only medical but also social challenges, he said, such as mental health issues and the need for prosthetics. 'Wound healing is a very big market. Unfortunately, Sarawak, like the rest of Malaysia and the world, has a very high prevalence of diabetes — nearly 20 per cent.' Dr Sim pointed to Sarawak's growing role in clinical research, particularly at SGH. 'Sarawak is a very important place for clinical research. Between 2013 and last year, the industry brought in RM1 billion in business,' he said. 'How many people have run a billion-ringgit business over 10 years? And this is just the beginning.' He pointed out that research is a sustainable industry. 'If you build infrastructure — how many Pan Borneos are you going to build? How many coastal highways are you going to build? But with research, you constantly need new drugs, new viruses — it never stops,' he said. He said this long-term vision was the rationale behind setting up the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre and other research-focused initiatives. KOTA BARU, July 4 — Starting January 2026, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers or personnel who are obese or do not meet the required body mass index (BMI) will not be eligible for promotion will not be eligible for promotion, said MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki. He said the move was aimed at emphasising the importance of health among MACC personnel, while also ensuring their fitness remained at an optimal level. 'Many civil servants are dealing with obesity or excessive weight. When we're overweight, it affects our appearance, fitness and service delivery to the public. 'Just imagine if a government officer is overweight; they won't be able to perform well and they'll be at risk of various health problems,' he said at a press conference after the handing over of duties between Kelantan MACC's new director Azmin Yusoff and former director Rosli Husain here today. Azam said a circular on the matter would be issued next week, and all officers would be given six months to manage their health. 'This especially applies to those with weight issues; they need to lose weight unless they have underlying medical conditions. It's important because departments like the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have already set a BMI requirement for promotions. 'I will implement this at the MACC, as we are also an enforcement agency. I want to make sure our officers are always fit and able to do their job well,' he said. Azam said the MACC has set a maximum BMI limit of 27, with internal administrative directives to be issued soon. 'I had earlier announced that (personnel) at each state would be required to undergo health check-ups at government hospitals every three months.
