As you listen to the ancient stories of lore and culture carved into rocks before you, the tangle of cranes, tanks, buildings and towers typical of huge industrial facilities sit at your back.

The carvings - at least one million of them - are spread over a series rock outcrops on the Burrup peninsula and surrounding islands just outside Karratha in north-west Western Australia.
"This is like a massive database," our guide, Ngarluma woman Sarah Hicks, says.
History and knowledge are recorded in each image.

A Tasmanian tiger records the extinct marsupial's presence thousands of years ago on the Australian mainland.

As we walk and talk, small rock wallabies navigate the hardy red stones on the outcrop peaks.
Ms Hicks says the presence of living animals on our visit is a good sign.
There are carvings everywhere, some more faded - and older - than others. There are whales and stingrays, mice and fish tails, dingoes, quolls, goannas, spears - and people.

Though we are asked not to take photographs of depictions of people.
The outback collection - the world's largest, densest and most diverse collection of rock art engravings - is still revealing its secrets.
A women's business carving of a hand was newly discovered and catalogued only weeks ago, Ms Hicks said.
The bloodwood sap boiled with water to treat illness, the sticky spinifex grass (baru) burnt to make strong glue for spears and axes, the flowers that reveal when to fish depending on their bloom, and the bush tomatoes that taste like a mixture of squash and capsicum.

She's assisted by young Ngarluma man Riley Sebastian, a ranger still learning.
He confesses he's never tried a bush tomato or sap medicine, but Ms Hicks says local elders still consume both.
As the talk ends, our small group of well-to-do east coasters and European tourists pass a team of air quality monitors checking emissions levels from the nearby gas and fertiliser plants and iron ore and salt export facilities.
We turn back to the dystopian landscape dominated by the machinery of natural resource extraction.

The contrast could not be more stark.
Woodside says it's committed to "protecting and managing this precious and culturally significant place".
"Woodside has taken and continues to take proactive steps - including through emissions reduction, data sharing and ongoing support for the Murujuga Rock Art Monitoring Program (MRAMP) - to ensure we manage our impacts responsibly," a spokesman said.
He said recent research shows the landscape and its ancient art can live alongside the gas operations with responsible management. How will history record us?
For at least 47,000 years the Ngarluma, Mardudhunera, Yaburara, Yindjibarndi, and Wong-Goo-Tt-Oo peoples have slowly, carefully managed their relationship with the Pilbara land, sea and their wildlife.
That record of management exists in the Murujuga petroglyphs.
If the elders were still carving records into the rocks today, I wonder how they would tell the story of the oil and gas operations on their doorstep.

I couldn't imagine living in such an eerie area. But my suburb is difficult to leave
Imagine, if you will, a hand of God, in addition to assisting Maradona to win the World Cup for Argentina in 1986, coming down from heaven and scooping up a swathe of humanity from the Asian subcontinent in a north-westerly direction over Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and then a final quick dip in far-Western Europe. Picture that hand scattering these people in one of the fastest-growing residential growth corridors in Australia and you will perhaps grasp something of what Craigieburn is about: this enigmatic suburb you either take a quick rubberneck glance at on your way to Canberra or Sydney, or whose existence you maybe consider as you board a train upon the Craigieburn line and wonder what poor souls have to ride this route all the way to the end. Previously a land of sweeping plains, farms, and sheep runs, Craigieburn has evolved over the decades to become the suburban love child of Metricon and Lendlease. It embodies aspiration. The median house price is $650,000, and is where anyone and everyone can get their first taste of the great Australian dream. There is a distinct old and new Craigieburn: the former features classic brick-veneer homely residences, while the latter includes an impressive array of rendered and modernist mansions that wouldn't look out of place in Toorak. In 2010, I was living in Moonee Ponds and serving as an honorary chaplain to the Coburg Tigers VFL Club. Highgate Reserve in the less-developed northern region of Craigieburn, with its 'MCG-sized oval' was a second home ground to the Tigers. The team travelled up here to play Gold Coast during that quasi-internship season they spent in the VFL. The ground was packed, primarily as NRL code-hopper Karmichael Hunt was pulling on the boots for the first time. Gold Coast were thrashed, and Coburg took in the gate earnings that day, so everyone was happy. I mention this anecdote, as a central arterial road, Grand Boulevard, literally came to a gravelly stop next to the oval; there were no shops, few homes, no roundabouts, and I simply couldn't imagine living in such an eerie place. Fast forward to 2014, however, when I moved up here to take up a post at the local Anglican school for almost a decade: a young, low-fee, rapidly expanding educational centre that now boasts three connected campuses. The Melbourne Anglican Diocese purchased a historic sea-captain's homestead and acreage that featured in the 1983 film Phar Lap with Tom Burlinson. Incidentally, my office was also originally located in the archaic coach house where the Toecutter gang tried to abduct Mel Gibson's son in the first Mad Max film, but that is another story ... We moved to a newer housing area called Highlands, which features a very agreeable man-made lake and a Saturday morning Parkrun around it. I decided that I probably lived in one of Australia's most multicultural streets. In order, my neighbours were: Pakistani Muslims, Iraqi Christians, Turkish Alevis, Turkish Sunnis, Afghani Hazaras, Chaldean Catholics, Indian Sikhs, Punjabis and Hmongs, with a smattering of Anglos, Filipinos and Pacific Islanders in the multiethnic mix. Craigieburn is part of the gargantuan 3064 postcode. Its population of over 65,000 in 2021 made it Australia's second-largest suburb, after Point Cook. We are so big, in fact, that in 2020, we were declared special enough to have our own tailored lockdown. These were indeed dark days for many of the multi-generational abodes in the area, and the cutely named exercise of 'remote learning' was somewhat strained in an area where two-thirds of residents speak a language other than English at home.

Home and Away to film in WA for first time in TV drama's history
Home and Away will film in WA for the first time in the show's 37-year history, and the team behind Australia's number one TV drama has promised an 'ambitions, high-stakes' storyline to mark the occasion. The program will swap Summer Bay for WA in October, with filming to take place across several locations including Perth, the state's rugged coastline and expansive outback. Home and Away's series producer, Lucy Addario, said the team is 'beyond excited' to be filming out west. 'Its awe-inspiring beauty, diverse landscapes and sheer scale make it the perfect backdrop for this huge storyline,' Addario said. Pre-production is underway for the five special episodes, which will showcase WA to audiences in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and almost 50 other international markets. The trip west is in partnership with Tourism WA and the WA Government, which is keen to capitalise on the 250,000 UK viewers who tune into Home and Away every night. The UK is already WA's largest tourism market, with 117,000 visitors from there pouring about $240 million into the local economy in 2024. 'We are thrilled' 'From Summer Bay to WA, we are thrilled to welcome one of Australia's most iconic television shows to our state,' WA Tourism Minister Reece Whitby said. 'Home and Away has been a staple of Australian television for close to 40 years, and this special WA storyline presents a great opportunity to showcase the state to millions of viewers across the country and around the world. 'When our pristine coastline and diverse tourism experiences are broadcast to homes across the country and overseas next year, we encourage viewers to come and see these spectacular locations for themselves.' Tourism Council WA chief executive Evan Hall said WA's beaches and coastal lifestyle 'are really appealing to the UK visitor'. 'Getting in with Home and Away is the ideal way to showcase that,' he told 7NEWS. The episodes are expected to air on Seven and 7plus in 2026.
