Building a winning system – Unlocking Ghana's football potential for economic and social growth

In July 2010, as the vuvuzelas roared across Johannesburg, the hopes of a continent rested on the shoulders of Asamoah Gyan. With one penalty kick, Ghana could have become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semifinal. He missed. And while Uruguay celebrated, Africa mourned. But that moment — heartbreaking as it was — signalled something extraordinary: Ghana had arrived. Not just as a participant, but as a contender.
Fifteen years later, the deeper question lingers: Why haven't we done more with that global capital?
In a world where people earn unconventionally from TikTok to tech start-ups, why isn't Ghana strategically monetising its most beloved, most watched, and arguably most exportable asset: football?
The answer lies not merely in sports, but in systems — or rather, their absence.
Ghana's football story is world class. We've won the Africa Cup of Nations four times. Our under-17s dominated the world in the 1990s. We've produced stars like Abedi Pelé, Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan and, more recently, Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus.
Yet their success stories remain largely individual. We have yet to build a system that translates individual excellence into collective, structural progress.
The real problem: no functional football development system
Football in Ghana is celebrated, not capitalised. Loved, but not leveraged. It remains entertainment, not enterprise. What we lack is a coordinated development ecosystem that converts footballing talent into structured economic, educational, and national outcomes.
This disconnect reveals five interlinked failures:
Policy failure
There is no politically committed, operational strategy linking football to youth employment, education, or national branding. Countries like Senegal have explored this linkage. The Diambars Institute, founded by football professionals including Patrick Vieira, combines academic training with elite football instruction. How it emerged, who drove it, and how it continues to function are questions we should be interrogating, not just to replicate, but to learn from.
Institutional fragmentation
Key ministries and agencies, including Youth and Sports, Education, and Finance, as well as the Ghana Football Association, operate in silos. No shared targets, no coordinated budgets. The result? No pipeline. No plan.
According to the Auditor-General's 2022 report, the Ministry of Youth and Sports failed to fully disburse the budgeted support to community football initiatives. Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has faced recurring transparency issues in its financial reporting, which has undermined trust with both the public and private sector investors.
Germany faced a similar breakdown after its Euro 2000 debacle. In response, it mandated that all top-tier clubs create licensed academies tied to education. Backed by €680-million, it built a pipeline that produced Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer. By 2014, it wasn't just winning trophies, it was reaping the rewards of an adaptive, learning-driven system.
Incentive failure
There is little reason for local investors or retired players to build domestic football systems when bureaucracy is opaque, and returns are uncertain. The recent MTN FA Cup final — marred by controversy — only reinforces why some hesitate.
Yet, models like Côte d'Ivoire's ASEC Mimosas and Académie MimoSifcom show that football can be both a business and a development tool. Its academy has produced global stars (think Yaya Touré, Gervinho and Emmanuel Eboué), reinvested earnings, and sustained a world-class pipeline. We must ask: What allowed that ecosystem to thrive? And who enabled it?
Take also, for example, 13-year-old Camden Schaper, a South African prodigy nurtured at SuperSport United's academy in Pretoria. The club's system — scouting talent from Safa tournaments, offering free education, life-skills training, and elite medical and coaching support — echoes the kind of dual-purpose model Ghana needs.
Under this structure, Schaper captained the under‑11s on an unbeaten Spanish tour, drew interest from Sporting Lisbon by age eight, and logged five-star performances in Blackburn's youth ranks before Chelsea reportedly bid £700,000 for him.
Yet despite this nurturing environment, he and his family relocated to the UK in 2023 to pursue his dreams, raising compelling questions such as: What stops a system from retaining its talent?
If Ghana is to build not just pipelines but ecosystems, we need to understand that question deeply. Who decides when talent leaves? What local capacity was exhausted? And how can pilot models surface those insights in real time.
Capability and learning deficit
Public agencies often lack the necessary tools and planning systems to implement effective reform. Worse, we've failed to reflect on and learn from our history — the 1991 and 1995 youth triumphs, as well as the 2010 World Cup run — all have vanished into nostalgia without substantive reform.
Why it matters: football as industrial policy
In the UK, sport contributes more than £99-billion to GDP and supports more than one million jobs. In 2021 alone, sports activities added £53.6-billion in direct Gross Value Added.
However, the UK's success isn't just about output; it's about the process. Coalition-building, smart regulation, and patient investment created the conditions for monetisation. We need to understand how they got there, not just what they built.
Equally, we must study failure. South Africa's 2010 World Cup offers a cautionary tale. Despite adding 0.5% to GDP and creating temporary jobs, the benefits were highly uneven. Infrastructure served already-wealthy areas. Fifa's rigid sponsorship system allegedly sidelined local entrepreneurs. And tourism returns were dismal. Scholars like Mirele de Aragao argue that the real cost was what was not funded: education, healthcare, and employment systems.
The question then becomes, what if we saw football not as frivolous, but as strategic?
Where might we begin? Learning, not prescribing
A few entry points worth exploring:
Could a cross-ministry task force define shared Key Performance Indexes for football and youth employment?
Could dual-purpose academies become national learning labs?
Could diaspora players co-finance infrastructure through matched public funds?
Could football-linked tourism (e.g., Abedi Pele museum) become a new export product?
Could a national football data system create value for scouts, clubs, and broadcasters?
These are not silver bullets. They're prompts — experiments to be piloted, adapted, or abandoned based on what we learn. None promise transformation alone. But together they could offer iterative learning loops that will quite literally change the game for Ghana and Ghanaians. That's where real reform starts.
We've played enough exhibition matches
Ghana has the talent. The passion. Even the capital. What it lacks is a system.
Football is more than a sport in Ghana. It is identity. Unity. Soft power. But soft power without structure is sentiment. If we want jobs, revenue, and national pride, we must build institutions that treat football not as nostalgia, but as a strategic asset.
Reform doesn't begin with blueprints; it starts with confronting uncomfortable truths, asking the right questions, and learning our way forward. Football can be a test case for something bigger — a model for how we rebuild broken systems by building better ones, bit by bit, match by match.
The missed penalty in 2010 was painful. However, the greater tragedy would be to continue missing the point. It's time to be strategic, intentional and committed to the sport Ghanaians claim to love so dearly. DM

In order to bid to host the F1, each group had to submit an application motivating their location as well as making a deposit of R10 million. CTGPSA wanted to pay the deposit with a promissory note, which is a legal document outlining their intended loan repayment structure. CTGPSA also raised concerns about the BSC's handling of the R10 million deposit, which was part of the bid application process. Cape Town has proposed a street-style circuit, similar to that of Monaco. CTGPSA, this week, suggested that the Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie acted in the best interests of Kyalami's F1 bid and labelled the Bid Steering Committee (BSC) as a biased group, who also acted in Kyalami's interests. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture ( DSAC) has called the allegations made by the Cape Town Grand Prix SA (CTGPSA) team as 'utterly baseless'. 'On 7 December 2024, Gayton McKenzie stated 'the race is going to happen at Kyalami' and this was before announcing the BSC, looking at other bids or doing economic assessments. The fact that minister McKenzie appointed the BSC cannot just be overlooked as trivial, especially given how things played out after this. 'Then, when the bid document was put out, we were given fewer than 10 days to submit our entire proposal, including a R10 million deposit – a bid to host a major global sporting event. Only after we pushed for an extension to encourage a fair process did an extension emerge. 'We respect the BSC and minister McKenzie and we want to work with them. But as a proudly South African bid, we hold fairness, accountability and a legacy for our country in high regard. We believe our plan offers the best shot at a successful, long-term F1 future on the African continent,' CTGPSA said. The group questioned how the BSC used the R10 million deposit, what triggered a refund, the timeframe of the refund, whether or not the funds would be held in an interest bearing account and if there was an audit trail. 'We feel alternative submissions received to be more comprehensive, viable and suited for the purpose,' was the response CTGPSA said it got from the BSC, which raised even more concerns. 'A payment of a deposit of R10 million to support an open bid submission should NOT be the determining factor as to whether a bid is considered or not, particularly when it does not make any changes to the economics of a bid." Stacey-Lee Khojane, spokesperson for the DSAC refuted CTGPSA's claims and said that all bids were judged fairly. 'The bid process was open to anyone who wished to submit a bid. All of the bids were judged fairly and objectively by the BSC. The minister was not a part of that process. Their allegations are utterly and totally baseless,' Khojane added. The BSC has acknowledged CTGPSA's remarks, but have not yet respond to Independent Media's enquiries about the allegations.

Banyana Banyana will once again be tested by the best on the continent, and with talisman Thembi Kgatlana not part of the squad, Desiree Ellis will be banking on a trusted core to carry the load. It's a squad built on continuity — with 17 players returning from the 2022 triumph — but the pressure is heavier, and the margins thinner. Five players, in particular, will be central to whether Banyana can go all the way. Masterclass in misdirection: Why the Springboks' hybrid player strategy will keep opponents guessing

The biggest takeaway from André Esterhuizen's ground-breaking cameo on the flank is that opposition coaches Scott Robertson, Fabien Galthié and Andy Farrell won't know what to expect when they tackle the Springboks later this season. Springbok fans have come to know and love the Bomb Squad, and all of its iterations. Since 2019, Rassie Erasmus has challenged the status quo by stacking his bench with some of the world's leading players. The split between forwards and backs has become a national talking point, with Erasmus deploying six and occasionally seven heavies from the bench to close out big matches. Like many of Erasmus' strategies, the Bomb Squad is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. While the Boks typically announce their team on a Tuesday, it's not always clear what Erasmus intends to do on matchday, and indeed, who will play where. Over the past seven seasons, locks have been used in the back row, flanks have been deployed at hooker, and Kwagga Smith — the 'OG' hybrid player — has switched from flank to wing. The modern game demands that every individual in a squad covers more than one position, and yet Erasmus and company have taken the utility concept further than any other side. If recent evidence is anything to go by, the Boks have unlocked the next level. Next level of hybrid player When the Boks played the Barbarians at the Cape Town Stadium last Saturday, Erasmus showed the world yet another tactical picture. Around the 45th minute, the Bok coach made eight substitutions simultaneously, which is in itself out of the ordinary. Specialist inside centre André Esterhuizen jogged onto the pitch with the rest of the subs — and at that point, the bench formation appeared to be a five-three split between forwards and backs. When the starting midfield combination of Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel remained on the field, a few of us in the press box wondered if Kriel might shift to wing to accommodate the new centre. Up in the coaching box, Barbarians boss Robbie Deans may have been thinking along similar lines. But after the next scrum was set, it became clear that the 1.93m, 116kg Esterhuizen was playing flank rather than centre, and that South Africa's bench split was six-two rather than five-three. The forward-heavy formation provided the Boks with more power in the closing stages, and they continued to punish the Barbarians en route to an emphatic 54-7 victory. Misdirection and double bluffs In recent seasons, most of the Six Nations teams have favoured a forward-heavy bench, with France going as far as to copy and paste the Boks' seven-one formation that made its debut at the 2023 World Cup. Other teams have developed an answer to Smith — with Ben Earl covering centre as well as the back row for England. But until now, no one has been bold or crazy enough to use a backline player in the forwards. The Bok coaches and players have spoken at length about the tactic in recent days, as they prepare for the Test-season opener against Italy at Loftus Versfeld. The move could maximise the talents of Esterhuizen — who has been a fringe player within the national set-up since 2018 — and strengthen the Bomb Squad in the long term. Erasmus admitted as much at the team announcement this week. Esterhuizen is unlikely to get much game time as a specialist inside centre, given Damian de Allende's hold on the No 12 jersey. But as a hybrid player with the rare ability to cover backline and forward positions, Esterhuizen could become more of a feature in South Africa's matchday squad in seasons to come. Does this mean that Erasmus has revealed his hand, or will it add yet another layer to the guessing game that precedes every Bok team announcement? More significantly, will it force opposition coaches and analysts to invest more time and energy into exploring potential scenarios, whenever they receive the South African teamsheet? Bok assistant coach Daan Human broached the subject earlier this week, confirming that the Esterhuizen innovation will serve the team's interests — and possibly lead to a situation where the Boks select an eight-zero split on the bench. And yet, if Esterhuizen is named on the bench in that scenario, the opposition won't know whether Erasmus intends to use him as a forward or back until he takes the field. As a result, it will be harder to anticipate South Africa's strategy in that crucial period of the game. Hybrid alternatives Human put things into perspective recently when he said that Esterhuizen was bigger and heavier than some of the forwards in the Bok side. Which begs the question: Is Esterhuizen the only backline player capable of making the switch, and does South Africa's newest tactical ploy hinge on the availability of one player? You can bet your bottom dollar that Erasmus is considering other options, but when you look at what's available at the franchises, there aren't many players who tick all those boxes. De Allende has packed down at flank before, when the forwards have lost a man to the sin bin. While he is 10kg lighter than Esterhuizen — another figure that puts the size of 'Andre the Giant' into perspective — he has the power and the mentality to mix it with the forwards, and fits the requirement of a hybrid player. The Boks could become even less predictable if they hand De Allende the role. Imagine a scenario where De Allende starts a Test at centre and finishes at flank. As was the case in the recent game against the Barbarians, Erasmus could announce a matchday squad that has five recognised forwards on the bench, before going on to use an extra forward option in the Test itself. De Allende (33) is one of the older players in the squad, and Erasmus will have to manage the veteran centre's workload in the lead-up to the 2027 World Cup. Esterhuizen was completely exhausted after putting in a 35-minute shift at the Cape Town Stadium, especially around the scrums and mauls. It's clear that the hybrid role will require a different approach to conditioning and workload management — and Erasmus has confirmed that they will bear this in mind. Guessing game The innovation has got people talking before a two-Test series that the Boks should win comfortably. Erasmus hasn't picked Esterhuizen for the first match at Loftus Versfeld this Saturday, and the six-two bench formation may appear somewhat conservative — until you start to wonder whether Franco Mostert will play lock or flank in the second stanza, and whether De Allende might shift to flank later in the match. Erasmus has made sure that every player in the current squad understands their role and when and where they will play over the two Tests against Italy and the one-off against Georgia. Outside the squad, the media and public will continue to speculate about the lineups, as will the Boks' future opponents. How will the opposition react to the picture that was presented at the Cape Town Stadium last week? Is it a sign of things to come against the All Blacks at Eden Park, France in Paris, and Ireland in Dublin later this year — or merely a well calculated bluff? Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Esterhuizen's cameo and the 'hidden' six-two split is that Scott Robertson, Fabien Galthié and Andy Farrell won't know what to expect — not in the months leading up to those marquee matches, not in the week before, and not until the moment when the Bok subs are deployed. The Tests season has only just begun, but Erasmus is already in their heads. DM
