Pendle caterers encouraged to join rewards scheme for healthy eating

Yahoo20-06-2025

Catering businesses in Pendle are being encouraged to sign up to a scheme that rewards caterers for offering healthy eating options.
The Recipe 4 Health programme, led by Lancashire County Council, supports takeaways, cafés, and mobile caterers.
To join the scheme, businesses must have a Food Hygiene Rating of three stars or above.
Jamal Dermott, from Lancashire County Council, said: "The Recipe 4 Health scheme rewards food businesses which offer a range of healthier snacks and meals, including salads, food with lower salt and sugar, grilled dishes, smaller portions, and water as an option if people want to avoid sugary fizzy drinks.
"We are urging as many Pendle catering businesses as possible to sign up to the scheme, which has many free benefits.
"These include free promotion of your business; free support in making positive changes to your menus, policies, and practices; and the opportunity to earn £1,000 per week contracts during the school holidays."
Pendle businesses which are Recipe 4 Health accredited can be considered as food providers for the Holiday Activities and Food programme, which provides activities and nutritious meals during school holidays.

'We miss vital NHS appointments over post delays'

A man says he and his unwell mother have gone almost two months without receiving critical NHS appointment letters due to ongoing postal delivery failures in south London. Amit Marwaha, who lives with his mum in a flat in Hackbridge, claimed since April they had not received letters in the post which had led to missed appointments. "I have diabetes, high blood pressure, and I've had a bad infection recently. My mum has diabetes too. She needs those appointments, and they're just not arriving," he said. Royal Mail told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that deliveries to Amit Marwaha's address had been taking place as normal and the company took "the timely delivery of mail very seriously". Mr Marwaha, who has lived in the property for 20 years, said he has also received multiple letters intended for others, including neighbours and people living on entirely different streets. As a result, Mr Marwaha said his mother was "panicking" about where her private health information might be being delivered to. Alongside the NHS letters, they are also missing financial documents, including bank statements and utility bills, and worry that sensitive information could also be misdelivered, he said. Mr Marwaha said his mother was "really behind on her bills" after not receiving them. "My neighbour has come to give me my letters sent to their house," he said. Residents feel 'forgotten' after Royal Mail delays Royal Mail could face fine after missing delivery targets Woman sent letter to herself to show postal delays He said he had repeatedly raised concerns with local postal workers, but was told there was no post for him. Mr Marwaha said he had made numerous complaints to Royal Mail, only to be told the post would arrive shortly - but these promises have not yet been fulfilled. "They said I would receive all my mail in 72 hours after I complained, but none of it came," he said. "They've never even come back to me or said sorry." Last week, it was reported that Royal Mail performance data shows 71% of first-class post in Sutton, where Hackbridge is located, was delivered on time between January and March 2024, far below the 93% legal target. In a bid to confirm something was wrong, he posted a letter to himself almost four weeks ago. "It still hasn't come," he said. "I knew then something was wrong. "I would like to get my mail, so would my neighbours. It's really stressed me out." Royal Mail said, according to its records, post was delivered to Mr Marwaha's address on five separate occasions between 12 and 23 June. A spokesperson said "extra safeguards" had been put in to ensure post was delivered to his flat. "Two long-serving postmen, who are familiar with the residents and their circumstances, regularly speak with the customers and let them know whether or not mail has arrived that day," they added. "I love them all so much and am proud to help in whatever way I can." Joe said 'I'm absolutely over the moon that we've won. Every member in our group is an absolute star as well as my friends. "They have worked so hard to transform their own lives while cheering on and supporting their fellow members, "Real friendships have been formed, and I am so lucky they trust me to help - especially listening to my terrible patter every Saturday morning! 'I truly believe I have the best, most rewarding, role in the world and having our incredible group recognised with this award makes it even more special." Joe also says there is no quick fix to weight loss but that support is there for anyone who is on weight-loss medication. Joe said: 'There's so much buzz at the moment about weight loss drugs, but the truth is there's no magic bullet when it comes to losing weight and, most importantly, keeping it off. "It requires real change, to build long term healthy habits and understand and change your relationship with food. "My members know that it's possible to lose weight – and maintain that weight loss – without these injections, and their incredible transformations inside and out, right from their very first week, are proof of that. "However, we also understand the appeal of interventions like weight loss jabs when you're absolutely desperate to lose weight, so we'd never judge anyone for taking them. "Everyone is welcome to get support at our group. 'It's the support we provide at Slimming World that sets us apart. We focus on equipping members with lifelong tools and support to lose weight and keep it off. "With every milestone reached, you see their confidence grow and their lives change along with their clothes size." Joe's Port Glasgow Slimming World group, which is also the biggest in the UK, takes place every Saturday, with sessions at 7.30am, 9am and 10.30am. For more information contact Joe on 07944340609

Tests 'closer to home' as new diagnostic centre opens

A £24.6 million community diagnostic centre has opened in Hinckley. The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board (LLR ICB) says the centre is the first of it's kind in the county. The facility aims to offer patients a wide range of diagnostic tests closer to home, it says, to ease pressure on busy hospitals. Located next to the site of the former Hinckley and District Community Hospital in Mount Road, it will provide tests such as CT and MRI scans, X-rays and ultrasounds, phlebotomy, dermatology, audiology assessments and endoscopy. The centre is expected to undertake 70,000 tests this year, increasing to more than 80,000 next year, the LLR ICB said. Ros Chadwin, 52, from Burbage in Leicestershire, said she was able to have an X-ray in her lunch break after the centre opened on Friday. "I was able to nip out and have it done, and nip back. She added: "I've even got time to take the dog for a walk!" Judith Spiers, head of nursing for community hospitals in Leicester, said: "The patients won't need to travel to the main hospitals, which takes pressure off the roads and the parking, but also it takes pressure off those sites so we can do the acute care there and the diagnostics can be done in centres like this." Helen Hendley, director of planned care for LLR ICB, said: "It's going to make such a difference to the local area." "We have made such inroads with our long waits for patients across the patch, but we know if we can get our diagnostics tests in quicker, we can then get to a treatment plan faster too." Officially opening the centre was Conservative MP for Hinckley and Bosworth, Dr Luke Evans. He said: "The next step is the £10 million day case unit over the road that we are working on, so that people can have their operations done here as well. "The two centres would compliment each other perfectly." Follow BBC Leicester on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram. Send your story ideas to eastmidsnews@ or via WhatsApp on 0808 100 2210.
