Coco Gauff overcomes 14 more double-faults to advance in Montreal
MONTREAL (AP) — Coco Gauff overcame 14 more double-faults to beat Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday in the National Bank Open.
Two days after surviving 23 double-faults and a third-set tiebreaker against fellow American Danielle Collins, the top-seeded Gauff rallied from a set and break down against Kudermetova to reach the round of 16.
Gauff, No. 2 in the world behind Aryna Sabalenka, entered the week having lost two straight matches since winning the French Open, falling in her opening matches in Berlin and Wimbledon.
McCartney Kessler of the United States upset fourth-seeded Mirra Andreeva of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Shelton won 90% of his first-serve points and fended off each of the break points Mannarino reached. It's Shelton's first victory over the Frenchman, who defeated him at the Australian Open last year and in Miami the year before. Although a strong-serve approach hasn't worked in the past, Shelton located his serves better this time around, delivering 16 aces in the straight-set win. "Usually with him a big serve doesn't always work, because his hands are so good and he stands up on the baseline," Shelton said after the match. "I have to hit spots and I hit spots really, really well today. I am really happy with the way I served." Round of 32: Ben Shelton def. Brandon Nakashima — 6-7(8), 6-2, 7-6(5) The Round of 32 brought more of a challenge with Brandon Nakashima taking the first set against Shelton. It's the first set Nakashima has ever won against Shelton, and the two have faced off four times over the past two seasons. That's not to say Nakashima is significantly worse than Shelton. Most sets between the two require a seventh-game winner or tiebreak, including the opening set of this one. Shelton went long and dropped the tiebreak, putting his back against the wall. His response? A 6-2 beating to force a third set. Shelton likes to challenge Nakashima and play up at the line. It's worked before, so why change the plan at this point? Another tiebreak came in the third set, but Shelton finished it off with an ace. It certainly wasn't Shelton's best game, but it's an important win if he wants to hold onto his career-high No. 7 ranking. Doubles dominance with Arthur Fils After back-to-back opening round exits in doubles play, Ben Shelton has found his groove alongside Arthur Fils. The two have paired twice before, but not since the Basel 500 in October. They came back to force a third set in the Round of 32 against Nathanial Lammons and Jackson Withrow. Doubles play is a bit different, where the third set is played as a 10-point tiebreak. The Round of 16 went a lot cleaner, with Shelton and Fils winning in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. The duo takes Centre Court against fourth-seeded Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Sha'Carri Richardson narrowly misses qualifying for 200-meter final, ending her US championships
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Sha'Carri Richardson narrowly missed qualifying for the 200-meter final Sunday at the U.S. track and field championships, concluding what's been a tumultuous week for the sprinter in the Pacific Northwest. Richardson wound up fourth in her heat in a time of 22.56 seconds. The top two finishers in each heat advance along with the next three fastest times. Madison Whyte edged her out on time by running 22.55 seconds in the same heat. A week ago, Richardson was arrested on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman, at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. She was booked into South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, for more than 18 hours. Days later, Richardson, 25, ran the opening round of the 100 meters at nationals before withdrawing from the event. She has an automatic spot to worlds next month in Tokyo as the defending 100-meter champion. This was Richardson's first 200 race of the season. She won a bronze medal at the distance during the 2023 world championships in Budapest. It was part of a stellar showing at worlds that season, as she also won the 100 and helped the 4x100 relay to a gold. A year later, Richardson finished with the silver medal in the 100 at the Paris Games. Richardson had a positive marijuana test at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials and didn't compete at the Tokyo Games. ___

White goes deep twice as the Braves beat the Reds in rain-delayed MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Eli White hit a three-run homer and a solo shot, helping the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 on Sunday in the rain-delayed MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway. White's first homer of the afternoon gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead in the second inning at the historic racetrack. The ball hit the safer barrier after clearing the outfield wall and the track itself. He added his sixth homer of the season on a leadoff shot in the seventh. Cincinnati went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base. Brent Suter (1-2) got the loss. Atlanta came in having clinched the season series, winning four of the first six games. The teams split the first two in Cincinnati before coming to Bristol. The game was scheduled for Saturday, but it was suspended in the first inning because of persistent rain. Hurston Waldrep (1-0) was on the mound for Atlanta when play resumed. The right-hander was brought up from Triple-A Gwinnett and traveled about 250 miles to Bristol Motor Speedway early Sunday morning. He pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball for his first career win. The Reds loaded the bases with two out in the eighth after a balk by Tyler Kinley and a walk by Tyler Stephenson. Ke'Bryan Hayes then hit a hard grounder to third, but Luke Williams made a diving stop and threw to second for the forceout.
