Ukraine will send delegation to Istanbul for talks with Russia on Monday

In a statement on Telegram, Mr Zelensky said that defence minister Rustem Umerov will lead the Ukrainian delegation.
'We are doing everything to protect our independence, our state and our people,' Mr Zelensky said.
Ukrainian officials had previously called on the Kremlin to provide a promised memorandum setting out its position on ending the war before the meeting takes place.

Moscow had said it would share its memorandum during the talks.
Russia launched the biggest number of drones on Ukraine since the full-scale invasion three years ago, Ukraine's air force said on Sunday.
The air force said 472 drones were launched over Ukraine.
Russian forces also launched seven missiles alongside the barrage of drones, said Yuriy Ignat, head of communications for the Ukrainian air force.
Earlier on Sunday, Ukraine's army said at least 12 Ukrainian service members were killed and more than 60 were injured in a Russian missile strike on an army training unit.
Meanwhile, Kyiv destroyed more than 40 military aircraft in a drone attack deep in Russia, a Ukrainian security official said.
The official said the attack took more than a year and a half to execute and was personally supervised by Mr Zelensky.
The operation saw drones transported in containers carried by trucks deep into Russian territory, he said.
The drones reportedly hit 41 bombers stationed at several airfields, including the Belaya air base in the Russian region of Irkutsk, more than 2,500 miles from Ukraine.
It is the first time that a Ukrainian drone has been seen in the region, local governor Igor Kobzev said.

Trump claims he had nothing to do with Bondi's grand jury order

Donald Trump celebrated his Justice Department convening a grand jury in cases against officials from Barack Obama 's administration. The president said while he wasn't involved in the decision, he is 'happy' that Attorney General Pam Bondi decided to act this week on the criminal referrals from the Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. It's not yet clear which U.S. attorney the DOJ directed to bring the case and convene a grand jury, or which former Obama officials are being targeted. A source familiar with the action, however, speculated to the Daily Mail that the criminal referrals Bondi is acting on are likely for ex-CIA Directors John Brennan and former James Comey. 'They deserve it,' Trump told CNBC Squawk Box host Joe Kernen during a Tuesday morning interview. 'I was happy to hear it.' The victory lap comes after Bondi revealed on Monday that she signed an order directing an unnamed prosecutor to convene a grand jury in the revelations over the inception of the Russia collusion investigation. Gabbard submitted criminal referrals to the Justice Department last month for former Obama and his officials, including Brennan and former DNI Chief James Clapper. She unveiled evidence claiming that Obama and his team illegally conspired in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election to link Donald Trump to Russian efforts to interfere in the campaigns. Some thought Gabbard's release of documents was a tactic to distract from the botched Jeffrey Epstein files review, which has the DOJ reeling with calls for Bondi to resign. The new grand jury directive from Bondi also follows FBI Director Kash Patel discovering last month a stash of bags in a secret room at the bureau with damning documents related to the Russia investigation that were meant to be burned. The documents were published by Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and consist of the classified annex to former Special Counsel John Durham's final report on the origins of the FBI investigation into Trump's 2016 campaign. Bondi's move on Monday is an escalation that takes President Trump's administration a massive step closer to criminally charging Obama and his former administration officials. 'Pam is doing a great job. I had nothing to do with it,' Trump said to CNBC on Tuesday when asked if he was the one who called for Bondi to act on the referrals. 'I actually read it, just like you did,' he added. Trump lamented to Squawk Box host Kernen that the Durham report annex should have been released earlier. He blamed his former Attorney General Bill Barr for dragging his feet on getting to the bottom of election interference investigations. The president said this allowed former President Joe Biden to take over and his team to 'bury' the revelations. While serving as special counsel, Durham examined the FBI's investigation into potential links between Trump campaign officials and Russia during the 2016 election. He concluded the FBI did not have sufficient evidence to launch the investigation at the time.

Moldovan regional leader jailed for aiding Russian meddling

CHISINAU, Aug 5 (Reuters) - A Moldovan court jailed a pro-Kremlin regional leader on Tuesday for seven years for channelling money from Russia to finance a political party that Moldova says is a front for Russian meddling. Moldova, which will hold a parliamentary election on September 28, has regularly accused Moscow of interfering in domestic politics by stoking pro-Russian sentiments in a subversive campaign to topple its pro-European government. Moscow denies the accusations of meddling in Moldova, a small former Soviet republic situated between Ukraine and EU and NATO member Romania. Prosecutors said regional leader Evgenia Gutul had systematically sent undeclared funds into Moldova between 2019-2022 to finance the now-banned party of Ilan Shor, an exiled pro-Russian businessman. Gutul was also found guilty of taking $2.5 million from an "organised criminal group" to coordinate the party's activities in several Moldovan regions. Gutul, an opponent of Moldova's current government who has occasionally visited Moscow to meet top officials, had denied wrongdoing. She can appeal her sentence. "This decision has nothing to do with justice," she said in a statement on Tuesday. "This is a political massacre." The Kremlin condemned the sentence as politically motivated and accused Moldova of trampling on democracy. "We see how the opposition is being clamped down in every possible way," said spokesman Dmitri Peskov. More than 100 people rallied near the court in the Moldovan capital Chisinau on Tuesday in support of Gutul, chanting "Shame" and decrying the government. Gutul, the leader of Gagauzia, a small autonomous region whose 140,000 residents are mainly ethnic Turks, has been placed on EU and U.S. sanctions lists on suspicion of seeking to destabilise Moldova. Last year, Moldovan police said Shor had sent $24 million through Russia's Promsvyazbank to pay voters in a presidential election and referendum on joining the EU. Shor, who has previously been found guilty in Moldova of fraud, denies any wrongdoing.

When the world 'likely' ends you can blame these three people, expert says

There are many, many, many ways the world could end, from nuclear explosions to meteors and global pandemics. But if and when Armageddon comes, there are three men you could probably blame, an expert has revealed. US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and China's top leader, Xi Jinping, are 'a walking version of the dark triad', said Dr Luke Kemp, of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge. The trinity consists of narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism, a word for the cunning of the Italian leader Niccoló Machiavelli. These toxic traits have long been found in the ruling classes behind civilisations that now lie in ruin, Dr Kemp found. He told The Guardian: 'Trump is a textbook narcissist, Putin is a cold psychopath and Xi Jinping came to rule [China] by being a master Machiavellian manipulator.' He added: 'We can't put a date on Doomsday, but by looking at the 5,000 years of [civilisation], we can understand the trajectories we face today – and self-termination is most likely.' The academic combed through the histories of 400 societies for his new book, Goliath's Curse, many of which ended the same way: The demise of civilisation by power-hungry elites. In our case, a powerful but small 'oligarchy' is working against our interests by ignoring threats like climate change and nuclear weapons, Dr Kemp said. Food shortages, mass extinctions, insufferable heat and droughts are just some of the consequences of rising global temperatures, scientists say. Dr Kemp added: 'All the threats we face today are far worse than in the past.' To the academic, any of our ancestors reading this wouldn't be too surprised to learn we're poised for global collapse. 'History is best told as a story of organised crime,' he said. 'It is one group creating a monopoly on resources through the use of violence over a certain territory and population.' Over time, inequality throws a spanner into these uneven kingdoms and empires, such as the Romans or the Han dynasty, as elites gobble up wealth and land and make societies fragile and riddled by infighting. Dr Kemp prefers to call these fallen civilisations 'Goliaths', which have three ingredients – grain, weapons that are controlled by one group and 'caged land', areas where people cannot flee to. Dr Kemp pointed to Cahokia, the Native American 'Manhattan' of early America, dominated by priests after the advent of maize. Or the first Goliaths of Mesopotamia, who ruled using bronze swords and axes. While in Egypt, the Red Sea and Nile meant people had little choice but to be ruled over by tyrannical pharaohs. When these Goliaths collapse, what follows isn't Armageddon but prosperity for the common people. 'After the fall of Rome, people actually got taller and healthier,' he said. If the modern world crumbles, however, things might not be as favourable. The ruling classes may try to regain their control with nuclear weapons, rather than swords or muskets, as they did centuries ago. Fears around nuclear warfare have been high this year, between multiple World War Three scares and growing authoritarianism. More Trending Such fears are a big reason why the Doomsday Clock, which tracks how close humanity is to annihilation, is only 90 seconds to midnight. Yet, if humanity creates 'genuine democratic societies to level all the forms of power that lead to Goliaths', the end of the world could be avoided. 'Today, people find it easier to imagine that we can build intelligence on silicon than we can do democracy at scale, or that we can escape arms races. It's complete bulls**t,' Dr Kemp said. 'Of course, we can do democracy at scale. We're a naturally social, altruistic, democratic species and we all have an anti-dominance intuition. This is what we're built for.'
