Girl Scouts stage mock trial at Chicago federal courthouse to explore legal profession
March 1, 2025 / 6:28 PM CST / CBS Chicago
A group of Girl Scouts got the chance to be lawyers on Saturday, working with real attorneys and judges at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago.
About 25 Girl Scouts took part in Project Law. They were matched with a female attorney, learned about the legal process, and built a case and presented it during a mock trial.
Organizers said the program teaches valuable lessons to girls, even if they don't want a career in the legal profession.
"Some of these girls might turn into lawyers. I can tell you right now, some of them absolutely will. Others might leave today saying, 'Maybe the law isn't for me, but I have a voice, and I can use it.' That's the goal for today," said Project Law co-chair Jillian Burstein.
While Project Law is in its 15th year, Saturday was the first time they did this kind of court case simulation.
To make the simulation even more real they brought in actors from The Second City to play the witnesses. In: Chicago

10 Masterpieces to Celebrate This 4th of July Weekend
The American experiment has inspired artists for over two centuries. Stirring songs, historical paintings, commemorative statues and other works salute our nation's enduring legacy and ever-evolving identity. Below, a collection of essays highlight the relationship between American artistry and patriotism. The song is simple: dignified and foursquare; patriotic, not chauvinistic; full of love, but not sloppily sentimental. Berlin called it 'an expression of my feeling toward the country to which I owe what I have and what I am.' For him, the national and the personal were the same thing. (He donated all the song's royalties to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.)

Anne Burrell Made Improv Comedy Debut Just Hours Before She Was Found Dead in New York City
Anne Burrell added another big accolade to her résumé just hours before her death: improv comedy. The Worst Cooks in America host made her improv debut at The Second City NYC in Brooklyn, New York, on the evening of Monday, June 16. She was found unresponsive inside her Brooklyn home at around 7:50 a.m. the following morning, the New York City Police Department told Us Weekly on Tuesday, June 17. One of Burrell's fellow improv students, Jane Margolis, noted via Instagram Stories on Tuesday that she had been with Burrell the night before her death. 'Spent last night enjoying Anne's cooking and doing an improv show together,' Margolis wrote, sharing a news post about Burrell's death. 'Still in shock but so glad I got to know you,' she added, along with a white heart emoji. (Us Weekly has reached out to Margolis for further comment.) Before her sudden passing, Burrell had been excited to take the stage Monday for her first performance after taking improv classes at The Second City NYC in recent months. 'Sooooooo… as I have mentioned I have been taking Improv classes @thesecondcitytc and having an ABSOLUTE blast!!! My class and I are coming to the end of this term and we get to do an actual show!!!' Burrell captioned a June 9 Instagram post showing her and her classmates, including Margolis, outside the venue. Burrell invited her fans to see her show on Monday night, adding, 'We are a small but SUPER fun bunch!!' Anne Burrell Through the Years: From Renowned Chef to Food Network Star On Tuesday, the NYC branch of Second City paid tribute to Burrell via Instagram. 'We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and student, Anne Burrell,' the organization said. 'She will be missed and remembered as a vibrant part of our Second City New York Training Center community. Anne brought joy, boldness and an unwavering 'yes, and' spirit. Her enthusiasm was contagious, her presence unforgettable. Our thoughts go out to Anne's family and loved ones.' Burrell's family confirmed the Food Network star's death at age 55 in a statement to Us on Tuesday. 'Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,' the statement read. 'Anne's light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit and boundless love remain eternal.' A New York City Police Department spokesperson told Us on Tuesday that Burrell was pronounced dead 'at the scene' inside her Brooklyn home after authorities responded to a 911 call, which led to the discovery of 'an unconscious and unresponsive' 55-year-old female. Inside Anne Burrell's Final Days Before Her Untimely Death: Food, Friends and More Authorities did not name Burrell as the deceased; however, Us confirmed on Tuesday that Burrell's home address matched the residence provided by police in their statement. Burrell is survived by her mother, Marlene, and sister, Jane, along with husband Stuart Claxton (whom she married in October 2021) and his son, Javier.

Girl Scouts Unveil Rare Childhood Photo of Music Legend in Uniform
Girl Scouts Unveil Rare Childhood Photo of Music Legend in Uniform originally appeared on Parade. A sweet picture of in her full Brownie regalia is making the rounds online after a local branch of the Girl Scouts of the USA posted it online. The Girl Scouts of Michigan dug up the rare childhood photo of the superstar to celebrate the news that she'd bought back the rights to her first six albums, posting the sweet snap alongside one of the ones the "Karma" songstress posted to mark the occasion, which showed her sitting cross-legged on the ground with vinyl copies of her reclaimed works spread around her in a semicircle. The throwback photo found a much younger Swift, likely between the ages of seven and nine, wearing a Brownie vest labeled for the Girl Scouts U.S.A. Great Valley troop, which links back to Eastern Pennsylvania—where she grew up. She posed next to another blonde little girl who proudly showed off her patches on a sash, which also showed their troop number: 665. "When Girl Scouts set their minds to something, there's no limit to what they can achieve. With courage, confidence, and character, we're building a generation that knows their worth—just like Taylor Swift reclaiming her masters," the organization wrote alongside the snapshots. Many tagged their fellow Swifties in the comments of the post, eliciting many emojis and "aws" in response. "omg even the Girl Scouts are team swift," one fan said in surprise, with the Michigan branch agreeing, "100% !!" "So proud!!" someone else gushed. "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other's gold," another quoted a song frequently sung by Girl Scouts, likening it to one of Swift's lyrics: "Just like the single thread of gold that ties me to you!"Girl Scouts Unveil Rare Childhood Photo of Music Legend in Uniform first appeared on Parade on Jun 2, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 2, 2025, where it first appeared.
