Gelato Messina to open second store in Victoria Park after WA success at Highgate parlour

An East Coast-based ice creamery will throw open the doors to its second location in Perth after demand for its creamy creations has increased.
Gelato Messina will open on Albany Highway in Victoria Park on Thursday with a launch party ice cream fans are sure to love.
It comes two years after the first Messina store opened in Highgate.
To celebrate, limited-edition Rotto buns flavour — cream bun gelato with whipped cream and raspberry purée — inspired by Rottnest Island's famed cream buns will be on offer.
It will be available exclusively at the Victoria Park store during launch week.
The new store will feature Messina's signature 40-flavour gelato cabinet, with 35 classic flavours and five rotating weekly specials, alongside a range of gelato cakes, house-made dulce de leche jars, and select Messina merchandise.
Owner and brand custodian Declan Lee said the team couldn't be happier with the Vic Park site, considering the suburb was where they first set sights on bringing Messina into WA.
'Vic Park was always where we wanted to open our first door, to be honest,' he said.
'We used to go over there and try and scope out locations, and it was probably our favourite location, but we couldn't find the right site, and then we found a really cool site in Highgate Mount Lawley, opened that, and that was fantastic.
'Then something came up in Vic Park, and we found the right site, so we are very excited that that's our second store.'
Mr Lee said Perth's response to Messina — founded in Darlinghurst in 2002 — had been exceptional, hence the new store in one of the city's hotspots.
'Perth is a really great city because it's so far away that if you do something there and you do it well, you get rewarded,' he said.
'I think people were kind of really excited for us to come so when we opened the first doors it was absolutely crazy and now we've kind of found our feet there and embedded ourselves with the locals.'
With more space to play in this store, Mr Lee is also excited to start rolling out more events, carts and pop-ups around WA with people urged to 'watch this space'.
Messina's team of gelato makers and pastry chefs create everything in-house, from baked brownie bits to coulis and caramels.
The gelateria even operates its own dairy farm in country Victoria, producing rich jersey milk just for the beloved gelato.
There are now 30 stores around the country.

The sites immediately surrounding Wickham are zoned for buildings up to 90 metres (about 30 storeys) and are eligible for an additional 30 per cent height with the inclusion of 15 per cent affordable housing based on state government planning incentives. The chief of Boss Energy has shied away from media scrutiny while his incoming counterpart Paladin Energy braved a press pack following a bruising month for both uranium majors. Boss Energy's outgoing CEO Duncan Craib declined to speak to media after his Diggers and Dealers presentation on Monday morning. Shares in Subiaco-based Boss have lost 55 per cent within the past three weeks after publishing a bleak output forecast for its flagship Honeymoon uranium project in South Australia. The forecast shock on July 28 came just four days after it was announced Mr Craib would step down from the top job by the end of September. He will stay on as a non-executive director from January 1 next year 'at the board's request'. Last May, just weeks after Honeymoon produced maiden uranium, Mr Craib sold 3.75 million of his 4.24 million shares for an average of $5.63 each to rake in $21.1m. Mr Craib's presentation on Monday immediately followed the presentation from Paladin Energy's incoming chief — Paul Hemburrow — who is currently the Perth-based company's chief operating officer and starts his new job on September 1. Paladin's shares have sunk 19 per cent over the past month after facing its own production guidance headaches at the Langer Heinrich uranium mine in Namibia. Boss and Paladin are the two most shorted stocks on the Australian Securities Exchange — 17.3 per cent of Paladin's shares are in the hands of short sellers and Paladin is not far behind with 17.1 per cent. Boss and Paladin both restarted their uranium mines last year after long periods of dormancy as the radioactive commodity's price languished. Mr Hemburrow told media on Monday after his presentation that restarting a uranium mine had proven to be 'a really difficult proposition'. 'I can't comment on what's happening with Boss, but in our particular circumstance, we had a number of complexities during the ramp up that were quite challenging,' he said. '(Paladin had) the unexpected grade variance from our medium grade stockpile and then in March we had a one-in -50-(year) flood event. And a week later we had another one-in-50-year flood event. 'So we had, we had quite a few very specific challenges.' Mr Hemburrow also took a veiled dig at Boss, which uses an in-situ leaching process to extract uranium, implying Paladin's operational hurdles would be easier to overcome. 'I'm not an in-situ leaching expert, but that looks really tricky,' he said. 'We're open cut mining in Langer Heinrich — it's very, very traditional. Diggers, trucks moving lots of dirt and processing using a pretty basic alkaline leaching process.'

Celebrities boost $130 million ‘Come and Say G'day' global tourism campaign

Australia's federal tourism marketing body has enlisted a star-studded cast to drive more international travellers to local shores in a new $130 million advertising campaign. Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson serves Pavlova at a winery lunch in Margaret River while wildlife conservationist-turned-television star Robert Irwin helps an American recover their phone which was stolen by an emu in a new three-minute film, which also features well-known figures in different target markets across the world. The campaign forms part of a plan to continue growing tourism revenue in Australia, with an expected record 10 million visitors in 2026, and hopes to grow that number to 11.8 million by 2029. Money spent by visitors totalled $52.6 billion in the 12 months ending in March this year according to Tourism Australia research, helping create more jobs and grow Australia's economy off the back of the successful first iteration of the 'Come and Say G'day' campaign in 2022, this time created by New York-based ad firm Droga5, founded by Australian David Droga. Bespoke campaigns for different markets will be rolled out this week. China is first, featuring actor Yosh Yu, before India later this month, with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's entrepreneur daughter Sara featuring. The campaign will then roll out to the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Germany in September. Ruby the Roo makes a big return, though not voiced by actor Rose Byrne this time. There is also a reference to Paul Hogan's infamous 1984 'throw another shrimp on the barbie' line, also from a past tourism campaign. Trade Minister Don Farrell said the new campaign would help boost the economy and is confident it will be a 'smash', coming off the back of the success of the first global 'Come and Say G'Day' campaign, which launched in 2022 and was created by ad agency M&C Saatchi.
