How the Minnesota State Fair picks acts for the Grandstand
Four headliners have been announced so far for the Grandstand at the Minnesota State Fair. They are Old Dominion (Aug. 21), Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls (Aug. 24), the Happy Together Tour (Aug. 25) and Def Leppard (Aug. 26).
WCCO learned all but one night has been booked for the Grandstand in 2025, but fair staff can't reveal them all just yet because some artists haven't officially announced their tours.
That has us wondering: How is entertainment picked for the Minnesota State Fair? Good Question. Jeff Wagner shares the exciting history, from music to mayhem.
Outside of learning what new foods will end up a stick, there might not be greater anticipation from Minnesota State Fairgoers than finding out who will headline at the Grandstand.
"It's really the heartbeat of the fairgrounds," said Renee Alexander.
She is the fair's CEO and for two decades has had the rockin' responsibility of booking acts for the biggest stage.
How is the entertainment picked for the grandstand? Alexander described it as a puzzle.
"It starts with who is actually out touring for the summer," she said.
Next, is the artist in the Midwest during the fair's 12-day schedule?
"If they have a show the night before ... 500 miles is kind of the max they will (travel)," she said.
Capacity is another factor. Are 14,000 seats too many to fill or not enough?
"For example, Taylor Swift. She can fill a football stadium for multiple nights, so she's not an option for us," said Alexander.
Before her explosion to stardom, Swift played at the grandstand in 2007 as an opener for Brad Paisley at just 17 years old.
Country and classic rock are the most popular music genres at the fair, but the diverse lineup also includes hip hop, pop, blues and more. Beyond music, comedians and other acts that make crowds laugh take the stage. One unique experience included the Internet Cat Video Festival.
"There were 10,000 people to watch internet cat videos," Alexander said with a smile.
The fair has come a long way since the early days of Grandstand entertainment. Thrill shows were a staple at the venue for over a century. That included a Civil War reenactment in the 1880s, crashing two trains head-on and a car crashing through a burning wall. Racing, by horse and car, was often the main attraction.
The summer of 2002 was the last time people sat in the stands and watched cars race around the track. Since then, there have been major structural changes to the Grandstand, including new seating, permanent concession buildings on both ends of the grounds, and party decks for a unique viewing experience.
How is entertainment booked for the smaller stages?
"We've got a team of staff in our free entertainment department that is working on booking the free stages all the time," she said.
Artists booked for the free stages, like the bandshell, get to perform on two consecutive days. The music often features local acts, old favorites and up-and-comers dreaming of a chance to grace the Grandstand.
"There's nothing better than outdoors in the summer in Minnesota. The fans come to the fair, they bring the energy, and have a great time," she said.

‘Living Single' Stars Erika Alexander And T.C. Carson Emotionally Reflect On Their Onscreen Relationship
Source: Vinnie Zuffante / Getty Erika Alexander and T.C. Carson were one of TV's favorite couples during their time on the '90s sitcom Living Single. But Carson was written out of the show in its fifth and final season after speaking out too loudly about inequities. Friends was the top sitcom of the era and one of the most popular in TV history. But its template of a tight-knit group of friends living together was set by Living Single. Both shows were produced by Warner Bros. and shot on the Warner Bros. lot. Despite the parallels and the strong ratings for Living Single, Carson and his castmates felt they were slighted in comparison when it came to salaries and budgets. Alexander and fellow Living Single star Kim Coles are co-hosting the ReLiving Single podcast, watching every episode of the series with behind-the-scenes info and their reactions. Created by groundbreaking TV executive Yvette Lee Bowser as a vehicle for Queen Latifah, Living Single aired on Fox from 1993 to 1998. It covered the lives and loves of six friends living in a Brooklyn brownstone and also co-starred Kim Fields and John Henton. Alexander played attorney-at-law Maxine Shaw, and Carson portrayed her love interest, stockbroker Kyle Barker. Alexander's role was so influential that she inspired a generation of aspiring lawyers and executives. (There's a website dedicated to her character and its impact.) Carson was the podcast's most recent guest in a special episode where Coles and Alexander broke down the music that underpinned the series. His visit made Alexander visibly emotional when they discussed the impact of his departure. 'You didn't just leave. There was a huge void. And I think that left a lot of us paralyzed,' Alexander said. She added, 'I actually didn't even know how to be Max without you. Part of her, the architecture of Max, exists inside of a conversation and a duel with a man named TC Carson, who's playing Kyle…As my comedy partner, like Fred Astaire needs his Ginger (Rogers), I just want to let you know that you were the best comedy partner I could ever have.' Carson told Comedy Hype in 2000 that he was fired from Living Single because of his advocacy and that the cast followed his lead. 'Part of it is, even now, if you're African-American, you shut your mouth and do your job,' he said. 'Don't ask questions. Be happy that you have a job. My whole time on Living Single, I was happy I had a job, but I understood the importance of the job I had. I understood the importance of what these characters meant to my community. And so when I come to you with a problem, it's because of that, not because of ego. They looked at it as ego.' Watch the full podcast below: SEE ALSO 'Living Single' Stars Erika Alexander And T.C. WWII veteran, TikTok star "Papa Jake" Larson to be honored in Normandy
Families in Normandy, France are getting ready to celebrate the life of "Papa Jake" Larson — A Minnesota native and war hero. He helped plan the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach, and later became a TikTok sensation. He died last week at the age of 102. "Support has been coming in, not just from all over the country but all over the world," said Karlan Larson, "Papa Jake's" son. Karlan Larson knew this day would come, but it doesn't make losing his father any easier. "It's just so many things and such an outpouring of love for his legacy," said Karlan Larson. A farm boy from Hope Township, Minnesota, "Papa Jake" lied about his age so he could join the National Guard at the age of 15, and he later found himself in World War II. He knew as much about typewriters as he did about guns, so with military leaders by his side, he helped type up the plans for D-Day. "Every person who landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day . . . came through these fingers," said Papa Jake during a 2024 interview. Later in life, he became a TikTok star. And at the age of 95, he began making yearly trips to Normandy. WCCO caught up with him last year in France, for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. "They treat me like a celebrity and I'm just a farm boy from Hope, Minnesota. It's crazy. It's plain crazy," he said. But his real reason for the trips was to honor his fellow soldiers who never made it home. "They are my buddies. They're up there right now," he said. "They're up there waiting for me." And now Karlan Larson believes his father is finally reunited with the brothers he lost during the war. "With open arms. With a pat on the back a hug, saying, hey Jake, job well done," said Karlan Larson. "We could not be more proud of my dad. As Papa Jake would say, 'I've got happy tears.' Everything thinking about papa, is all great, great memories." "Papa Jake" died after a heart procedure last week. A celebration of life, put together by a youth group, will take place in Normandy on Saturday. Organizers expect around 4,000 mourners to be there.

The group's sudden and widely criticized breakup by WWE creative is seen by many as a major missed opportunity, which is why fans are so eager to see them reunite. The Hurt Syndicate: A New Chapter in AEW That reunion has partially happened in AEW. Led by MVP, "The Hurt Syndicate" features Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin, who are the reigning AEW World Tag Team Champions. The group recently and reluctantly allowed the controversial former AEW World Champion, MJF, into their ranks. With the group thriving in AEW, Alexander, who was released from WWE, seemed like the logical final piece of the puzzle. He recently made a surprise debut for TNA Wrestling, competing in a high-profile match against Mustafa Ali at the Slammiversary pay-per-view. While his current focus is on TNA, Alexander's comments have left the door wide open for a potential jump to AEW to complete the reunion down the line.
