This Chrysler coupé was slammed by Jeremy Clarkson, but it's now a great bargain GT

There are plenty of things people can't forgive Jeremy Clarkson for, but near the top of my list is his comparison of the Chrysler Crossfire coupe's rear end to a dog relieving itself.
He has certainly caused worse offence, but now, whenever I see a Crossfire coupe, it's hard not to recall that unpleasant analogy. It's a shame, really, because the Crossfire has a striking design - not necessarily because its rear half resembles a fleeting scene from parks across the country.
The car's exterior was largely the work of American designer Eric Stoddart, part of a team led by Briton Trevor Creed. But the real story behind the Crossfire goes beyond the design team. It stems from the so-called 'marriage made in heaven' between Daimler and Chrysler - more accurately, the takeover of Chrysler by Daimler, orchestrated by Juergen Schrempp and Bob Eaton, who presented it as a merger of equals in 1998.
In reality, it was far from equal. The deal triggered the departure of some of Chrysler's top engineers, led to a decline in quality for some Mercedes models, and brought about a period of muddled product planning especially for Chrysler.
Despite clear financial and marketing risks, the companies pushed to integrate their platforms and parts, combining a high-volume, low-margin American brand with a lower-volume, high-margin premium brand. But that's a story of its own.
One of the more curious products to come out of this merger was the Chrysler Crossfire. Its development was significantly accelerated by the ready availability of Mercedes hardware to serve as its foundation.
As the first-gen SLK was bowing out, the Crossfire, sharing many of the same parts but built by Karmann in Germany, was just coming on stream.
Standard cars featured Merc's 215bhp 3.2-litre V6 and a six-speed manual, although a five-speed auto was available. Thrilling to drive, it is not. Dozy recirculating ball steering and all that. But it does work well as a relaxing GT.
The supercharged SRT-6, with 330bhp and uprated suspension and brakes is much sharper. But is still hamstrung by that recirculating ball system. And it's only available with an auto.
Is the Crossfire a dog's dinner then? Absolutely not. Prices start from sub £3000, it's largely reliable and most parts are shared with the SLK, so are easy to find.

Next-Gen Cockpit: Is a $3,000 Infotainment Upgrade Worth It?

Car Interiors Are Becoming the New Digital Playground What if your car's windshield could outsmart your smartphone—and turn rush hour into a front-row seat at a digital light show? Imagine this: In January 2024, CES attendees queued up not for a glimpse of the latest supercar, but for a seat inside the Valeo and Sennheiser ImagIn demo car—a rolling sound-and-light show that would make Pink Floyd's lighting director weep with envy. The message was clear: the cockpit is the new concert hall, and infotainment is no longer content to play second fiddle to horsepower. As Proust might have swapped madeleines for dashboard projections, today's drivers crave more than mere transport—they want immersion, a digital cocoon that blurs the line between the road and the realm of possibility. The old dashboard, with its buttons and knobs, is fading like AM radio static. In its place: augmented reality (AR) overlays, gesture controls, and voice-activated everything—a symphony of senses orchestrated by silicon and code. Source: Audi The Third-Person Cinematic Scene Picture a rainy Tuesday, somewhere on the I-405. A commuter's sedan glides through traffic, windshield streaked with city light. On the dash, navigation arrows float above the asphalt, projected in AR, gently nudging the driver toward the correct exit — no more squinting at tiny screens or deciphering cryptic beeps. In the back, a passenger waves a hand to skip a song, the gesture picked up by sensors embedded in the headliner. The car responds, seamlessly, like a butler who's read your mind. But is this digital theater a revolution in driver focus, or just a $3,000 emoji upgrade? From Buttons to Swiping Air: The Rise of Gesture and Voice The tactile era of dials and switches is being replaced by a new choreography: gesture, touch, and voice. Luxury automakers have already rolled out multimodal human-machine interfaces (HMIs), blending touchscreens, haptic feedback, and proximity sensors. The global automotive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) market reached $23.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a 12.8% CAGR from 2025 to 2034. This growth is fueled by demand for advanced user experiences, integration of augmented reality displays, voice and gesture controls, and AI-driven personalization. Automakers are rolling out systems that blend touchscreens, haptic feedback, gesture recognition, and voice control. For example, Continental launched a fully integrated HMI platform in February 2025 that combines gesture, voice, and touch into a seamless interface for electric and autonomous vehicles. Gentex in March 2025 released a next-gen smart rearview mirror with voice-activated controls and AI personalization, targeting both EV and luxury markets. The adoption of AR head-up displays and multimodal input is a key trend, with new systems designed to adapt content and controls based on driving mode and passenger preferences The goal? To create systems that are instantly intuitive — so you can adjust the climate or queue up a playlist without taking your eyes off the road, or your hands off the wheel for more than a flicker. Sidebar for the skeptics: Yes, sometimes the system mistakes your emphatic storytelling for a command to call your mother-in-law. But the tech is learning — fast. 'Augmented Reality: The Windshield as Canvas' AR head-up displays (HUDs) are moving from concept to curb. Audi's latest system projects navigation cues—arrows, lane guidance, even hazard warnings—directly onto the windshield, layered over the real world. Envisics, with backing from global giants, is developing holographic waveguide HUDs for production by 2026, promising a wide field of view and razor-sharp clarity even in full sun. The new nanophotonic lenses from AllFocal Optics, co-developed with Zeiss, beam information directly to the retina, ensuring that every driver—glasses or not—gets a perfectly focused readout. The upshot? Less distraction, more confidence, and a user interface that feels more like a sci-fi film than a spreadsheet. Source: Brian Iselin Immersion for All: The Multisensory Cabin Valeo and Sennheiser's ImagIn system is a harbinger: immersive soundscapes, ambient lighting, and projected content turn the car into a personalized lounge. Gesture-detection software and smart surfaces mean every passenger can interact with the system, not just the driver. The car becomes a shared experience — each ride a chance to curate your own digital atmosphere, whether you're crawling through rush hour or cruising the Pacific Coast Highway. Software Eats the Dashboard The shift to software-defined infotainment means over-the-air updates can add new features or fix bugs without a trip to the dealer. AI-driven personalization learns your habits — favorite routes, playlists, even your preferred cabin temperature — making each drive feel bespoke. And as 5G connectivity becomes standard, streaming, gaming, and real-time traffic updates are as fast as your home Wi-Fi. So yes, the age of immersive infotainment is here, and it's rewriting the rituals of the road. But as we surrender more senses to the silicon orchestra, the question lingers: Will all this digital dazzle deepen our connection to the drive, or just make the car another screen to scroll? For now, at least, the ride has never sounded—or looked—so good. About the Author Brian Iselin View Profile

2025 Chevrolet Equinox vs Volkswagen Tiguan: New Generations Collide

Battle of the next-generation models Crossovers have taken the nation by storm, combining the utility of an SUV with the efficiency of a sedan. The 2025 model year brought some long-awaited changes, with several new generations officially making their market debut. The Chevrolet Equinox and Volkswagen Tiguan hit dealer lots in their fourth and third generations, respectively. Both crossovers come with updated styling and competitive pricing, and it's clear their respective manufacturers are out to make a bold statement and put consumers at the forefront. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox Activ — Source: Chevrolet The Chevy Equinox starts at a lower price Now in its fourth generation, the Chevrolet Equinox rolls out with a new design that carries a rugged aesthetic similar to that of the Traverse. Chevy's midsize crossover arrives with a redesigned interior, complete with an updated center console and new digital displays. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine carries over from the previous generation and front-wheel drive continues to come standard, with all-wheel drive available as an upgrade. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox — Source: Chevrolet While the 2024 model was available in four trim levels, the 2025 model year changes things up. The LS and Premier trims are gone, leaving just the LT and RS trims from the previous model year. The addition of the new Activ trim rounds out the range. The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox starts at $28,600 at the base LT level, while the RS and Activ trims are available from $33,000 each. The Volkswagen Tiguan kicks off its third generation with a new platform and updated design inside and out. As the German manufacturer's best-selling model in the United States, the Tiguan puts consumers first, with increased performance, improved efficiency, and a classy array of comfort and convenience amenities. The turbocharged engine gets an upgrade, putting out more power and higher fuel economy. Front-wheel drive comes standard, with an all-wheel drivetrain landing on the list of options. Notably, the 2025 model year marks the end of the third-row option, which means all Tiguan models seat five passengers. The S trim kicks off the range, priced from $29,495, with the SE and SE R-Line Black making up the midtier. The SEL R-Line wraps things up at $39,755, which gets you plenty of bells and whistles, including a 15-inch center touchscreen display. VW Tiguan runs away with performance The 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan marks its entry into a new generation with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that now generates 201 horsepower, up from 184 in the previous iteration. The Tiguan also sheds 170 pounds thanks to the use of aluminum in the suspension and high-strength steel throughout the body. Models equipped with VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive arrive with 221 lb-ft of torque, while front-wheel drive renditions see that figure drop to 207 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard across the range. 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan — Source: Volkswagen Unfortunately for the 2025 Chevy Equinox, the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine carries over from the previous model year and continues to produce 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a CVT, but upgrading to all-wheel drive nets the Equinox an eight-speed automatic transmission instead. The Volkswagen Tiguan offers more power than the Chevy Equinox, all while remaining competitive when it comes to efficiency. When equipped with front-wheel drive, the Tiguan is rated for 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. A comparable Equinox earns up to 26 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Tiguan models equipped with 4Motion all-wheel drive see their efficiency drop by three miles per gallon in the city and two miles per gallon on the highway. An Equinox with all-wheel drive does better, with efficiency dropping by two miles per gallon in the city and one on the highway. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox Activ — Source: Chevrolet Both base models come well-equipped Volkswagen and Chevrolet have done particularly well in making sure their crossovers appeal to the average consumer. Both base models boast a standard equipment list comprising upscale comfort and convenience features that would have been reserved for mid- and top-tier trims a few years ago. There's no shortage of tech in either model, and there's a not-so-short list of industry-standard safety systems as well. 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan — Source: Volkswagen The base Tiguan S starts at $29,495 and includes heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and second-row vents. A leather-wrapped steering wheel adds a touch of premium flair to the competitively priced crossover. Up front, a 12.9-inch touchscreen display sits centered, complemented by a 10.25-inch driver information display. Wireless charging, a feature normally reserved for higher trims, comes standard. The Tiguan also includes an additional storage area located under the floor. Exterior LED lighting and athletic 17-inch wheels create an athletic aesthetic, while heated side mirrors and washer nozzles make for convenient features in colder weather. The base Equinox LT is also ready for colder weather, with a heated steering wheel, front bucket seats, and side mirrors. The latest offering includes 11.3-inch infotainment and 11-inch driver information displays, which are further complemented by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Equinox seats five passengers comfortably, and folding down the rear seats opens up a vast 63.5 cu ft. of cargo space. In addition to its squared hood and Traverse-like demeanor, the Equinox rides on 17-inch wheels whose athleticism is accentuated by LED headlights and taillights. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox LT — Source: Chevrolet At the top of the range The Chevy Equinox features two range-topping trim levels, the RS and Activ. Both variants of the popular crossover start at $33,000, but there are some defining differences between the two. The Equinox RS boasts a sportier aesthetic, with black mirrors, emblems, and badging. 19-inch wheels come standard, with 20-inch wheels available as an upgrade. Inside, Evotex-trimmed seats and a flat-bottomed steering wheel create a more engaging driving experience. For those who want to extend the blackout look, there's an optional black roof available for two-tone color combinations. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox ACTIV — Source: Chevrolet The Activ trim is a new addition for the 2025 model year, and it brings its own adventurous aesthetic to the Equinox. It rides on 17-inch machined wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, and, like the RS trim, gets its own unique front end. Inside, the Activ model features Evotex and sueded microfiber seating for a more comfortable, yet rugged look. Whereas the RS trim gets a black roof, the Activ model is available with a white roof. Notably, both the RS and Activ trims come with a standard power liftgate and wireless charging. The range-topping VW Tiguan SEL R-Line starts at $39,755, a hefty amount more than the range-topping Equinox models. For that price, you get a whole host of premium amenities, including perforated Varenna leather seats, complete with massage, heat, and ventilation functionality. The outboard rear seats come heated as well, and are further complemented by three-zone automatic climate control. 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan — Source: Volkswagen A Harman Kardon 12-speaker sound system comes standard, and the infotainment display gets upgraded to a 15-inch touchscreen. Ambient interior lighting with up to 30 color options helps drivers make the Tiguan their own. The Tiguan's exterior gets its own unique look, with R-Line badging, intakes, bumpers, trim, and side sills. Inside, the R-Line treatment continues, with a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel with R-Line badging. Brushed stainless steel pedals ensure that the Tiguan SEL R-Line is the complete package from top to bottom. Final thoughts No matter what way you cut it, the Chevrolet Equinox and Volkswagen Tiguan are both impressive crossovers, but if budget is your primary concern, the former is the right pick. If money is no object, then clearly the top-spec VW Tiguan is the way to go. If you're looking for a middle ground, then the Tiguan SE, from $32,295, and either Equinox RS or Activ, priced at $33,000, are an easy compromise. Frankly, I'm partial to the Equinox RS – but I own a Chevy Blazer RS, so take that for what you will. 2025 Chevrolet Equinox RS — Source: Chevrolet The mid-tier Volkswagen Tiguan SE R-Line Black compares well to the Equinox RS, with a black grille, badging, intakes, bumpers, and trim. It rides on 20-inch black alloy wheels as well. Unfortunately, it starts at $35,455, making it $2,455 more expensive than the Equinox RS. That specific Tiguan trim does include several premium features the Equinox lacks, including atmosphere mood selection and V-Tex leatherette upholstery, but it's up to the individual consumer to determine if those features are worth the extra money. BMW recalls over 70,000 EVs for software issue

Software Issue Could Cause Loss Of Drive Power BMW is recalling 70,852 electric vehicles because of a software issue that could shut down electric motors, leading to a sudden loss of drive power, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall includes the following models: 2022-2025 BMW i4 2022-2024 BMW iX 2023-2024 BMW i7 2024 BMW i5 Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:09 / 0:09 Full screen 2024 Kia EV6 GT-Line review: Is this the EV that will convert you? Watch More False Alarm Can Trigger High-Voltage Shutdown Source: BMW According to the recall documentation, software in the affected vehicles may receive erroneous indications of a 'double-isolation condition,' which would warrant shutdown of the vehicle's high-voltage electrical system, cutting off power to the motors. This false alarm will trigger a shutdown even if there is no issue. This condition can lead to loss of drive power while moving, which increases the risk of a crash, the NHTSA noted. However, power-assisted braking and steering are not affected, the safety agency noted. A red warning symbol may be shown on the dashboard 15-20 seconds before loss of power occurs. BMW estimates that approximately 43 warranty claims related to this issue, but told the NHTSA that it is unaware of any related accidents or injuries. OTA Fix The remedy is an over-the-air (OTA) software update that will be pushed to the recalled vehicles free of charge. Owners can also take their vehicles to a BMW dealership to have the update performed, if they wish. Autoblog Newsletter Autoblog brings you car news; expert reviews and exciting pictures and video. You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. BMW plans to mail owner notification letters explaining this beginning August 5. In the meantime, owners can also contact BMW's customer service department at 1-800-525-7417 for more information. Next-Generation EVs On The Way The models included in this recall represent BMW's current strategy of using common underpinnings for its electric and internal-combustion models, but that's about to change. Aptly dubbed the Neue Klasse (German for 'new class') BMW's next-generation EVs will feature new, more distinctive designs and a dedicated architecture. A new 800-volt electrical architecture and cylindrical battery cells (currently used by Tesla and Lucid, but new territory for BMW) will improve charging speed and range, respectively, BMW claims. The first Neue Klasse model will be the iX3 crossover, which is scheduled for a full reveal in September at the IAA Mobility Show in BMW's hometown of Munich, Germany. The iX3 will be followed by a sedan that could also serve as the basis for a future electric M3. About the Author Stephen Edelstein View Profile
