Georgia runoff to decide Democratic nominee for Public Service Commission

Washington Post16 hours ago
ATLANTA — Voters head to the polls Tuesday to choose a Democratic nominee for one of the posts on the Georgia Public Service Commission, which oversees utilities including Georgia Power Co.
Keisha Waites and Peter Hubbard are competing in a runoff after neither won a majority on June 17. Waites finished first and Hubbard finished second in a three-way race. Under Georgia law, when no candidate wins a majority, a runoff is required to choose a winner.

Trump tells Texas Republicans to redraw the state congressional map to help keep House majority

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he is pushing Texas Republicans to redraw the state's congressional maps to create more House seats favorable to his party, part of a broader effort to help the GOP retain control of the chamber in next year's midterm elections . The president's directive signals part of the strategy Trump is likely to take to avoid a repeat of his first term , when Democrats flipped the House just two years into his presidency. It comes shortly before the GOP-controlled Texas Legislature is scheduled to begin a special session next week during which it will consider new congressional maps to further marginalize Democrats in the state.

Federal agency shifts stance on transgender discrimination complaints, but hurdles remain

The federal agency responsible for enforcing laws against workplace discrimination will allow some complaints filed by transgender workers to move forward, shifting course from earlier guidance that indefinitely stalled all such cases , according to an email obtained by The Associated Press. The email was sent earlier this month to leaders of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission with the subject line 'Hot Topics,' in which Thomas Colclough, director of the agency's Office of Field Programs, announced that if new transgender worker complaints involve 'hiring, discharge or promotion, you are clear to continue processing these charges.'
