‘I'm not always dressing for the male gaze': Olivia Attwood Dack on how she's made glasses cool again

There was a time when wearing glasses – especially as a woman – was synonymous with awkwardness. A shorthand for geeky, uncool or – most misogynistic – unattractive.
But Olivia Attwood Dack has never been one to lean into stereotypes.

The reality TV star and presenter has long been associated with her bold eyewear choices and it's something she's become proud of.
'I think I am so known for my glasses, like I really bring glasses into my fashion,' she says, 'and I've done so since I was on Love Island. I mean, I was the first person to ever bring their glasses into Love Island.'
The reaction, at the time, was unsurprisingly mixed. 'Back in 2017 […] people found that wearing glasses was kind of like geeky or like, not cool,' but Attwood saw it differently. 'I've always been a very pro glasses wearer, a proud glasses wearer.'

She's been wearing prescription glasses and lenses since her early teens – but, like many, didn't always feel confident about them.

'I think when I was like 13 […] I'd have them in my school bag, and I'd be squinting at the board […] and then the teacher would be like, Olivia, you're squinting, put the glasses on.'
But that reluctance faded with age. 'As I got into my later teens […] I didn't love doing contact lenses,' she says, 'I always have really long nails. I do find them like a bit of a faff and I genuinely find glasses a really good way to express fashion.'

More than a practical choice, glasses have become part of her identity. 'They can be a statement if you want them to be. I think, for me, they've become a massive place of security,' she says. 'If I'm not feeling my best […] I feel like I can kind of hide behind glasses if I choose a chunkier frame.'
And Attwood Dack's collection is extensive.

'I think I probably have easily 20 pairs, but maybe more,' she laughs, 'I am an avid collector.'
She selects frames the way others choose shoes or jewellery: 'If I was wearing a predominantly black outfit, I might go for a tortoiseshell frame or a gold frame […] or I might use black on an outfit that's already quite busy.'

But her go-to pair is a black, chunky frame from Saint Laurent, 'they go with everything and they're robust,' she says. 'Having a large surface area with the lens as well gives you a lot more freedom than a slightly narrow lens.'
This is one of the pairs that she has included in her latest project: a style-led collaboration with Boots Opticians that showcases the range of designer frames they have on offer, from Attwood Dack's favourite Saint Laurent to Gucci and All Saints.

'I've got quite a small face, so technically, they probably wouldn't recommend a lot of the frames I have,' she says, 'but I enjoy the quirkiness and the aesthetic of an overpowering frame.'

Overpowering is a moniker Attwood Dack has long been associated with, following her debut on our screens back in the late 2010s. But what some dubbed 'overpowering', others deemed straightforward and outwardly spoken.
Throughout her career, Attwood Dack has borne the brunt of some appallingly sexist remarks – from the way she looks to her personality. But incredibly – and perhaps this is what owes to her long and ever-growing career – she has managed to stay put in her own beliefs and identity.
'I think glasses are a fashion statement now, and I think they can be sexy and they can be feminine as well as cool,' she says, 'I'm not always, you know, dressing for the male gaze.'

Her priorities – like those of many women – have evolved.
'When you're younger, it's something you're very focused on – does something make me look cool? Does it make me look, you know, attractive?' she reflects, 'and I think now it's like, as long as I feel good when I look in the mirror, I don't care.
'I want the girls to love it, the gays to love it.'

Despite her commitment to glasses as part of her style, she still finds resistance in unexpected places – like the glam team.
'The other night, I hosted an event for eBay, and I had to read from autocue and I was like, I need to wear my glasses,' she recalls, 'and [her make-up artists] were like, no, you're hiding our work. But actually I think that's not correct anyway, because that's the beauty of a bigger frame – that you do see all of the eye.'
And if the outdated assumption still exists that wearing glasses makes you look more serious or intelligent – 'I'm not against that,' Attwood Dack laughs, 'if it makes me look smarter – there's even better reason to wear them!'
It's clear that she thinks glasses are just as good an accessory as a bag or bracelet – even if they don't
necessarily
suit your face shape.
'Sometimes I like to lean into the fact that the frame is very big – or even too big – on my face,' she laughs.
'There is fun in leaning into a pair that isn't your style.'

I'm a teacher and I was left fuming by my end of year gift – it's borderline insulting & so cheap

WITH schools across the country breaking up for summer this week teachers are set to be in for a treat with a deluge of end of year gifts. However, one educator was left less than impressed by their gift with people describing it as 'insulting.' 1 Taking to Reddit the teacher shared a snap of their disappointing present, captioning the image 'What my school gave its teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week.' Much like the end of term in the UK, Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated in the US by giving staff gifts as an acknowledgement of their hard work. But in this case the teacher would rather they hadn't bothered at all. The teacher revealed they had been given a total of seven Starburst sweets for being 'the star of our school.' But that's not all, they were also handed a sheet of bubble wrap with the instructions to 'pop every hour' as a form of stress relief. Fellow Redditors were equally baffled by the lacklustre gift, sharing their thoughts in the comments. One wrote: "This is so insulting.' 'Not even a whole pack though, how cheap can you possibly be,' added another. A third chimed in: 'Here's some left over Halloween candy and the packing material that came with something we wanted.' It comes after a mum-of-two named Lou took to social media to ask teachers what gifts they actually want to receive. I'm a mum of two and made Xmas gifts for my kids' teachers for £6, using bargains from Asda, Lidl and B&M The content creator shared her short clip with the caption 'Primary school teacher gifts help?!' Alongside her video, Lou then asked: 'Primary school teachers: What makes a great gift? 'I don't want to just get a mug or a key ring. 'Tell me something you actually WANT to get?' The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @ lemon_squeezey, was posted just three days ago, but has quickly racked up 242,600 views, 566 likes and 916 comments. Teachers eagerly flocked to the comments to share the gifts parents should buy - with many suggesting gift cards. But there's also a free item that takes minutes to do and isn't a handmade card. One teacher shared a free idea that is so simple but really effective: "An email to the headteacher saying how amazing we are."

7 clever tricks Primark does to keep you walking & buying more than you need – & how to avoid overspending

PRIMARK is famous for its budget-friendly fashion and beauty items, but it also employs some clever tactics to encourage you to spend more. Like many retailers, it uses subtle — and often unnoticed — strategies designed to get you to part with a bit more of your money than you intended. 4 Dr Jansson-Boyd, who is an associate professor at Anglia Ruskin University, told The Sun: "As a store, Primark uses a high number of well-known marketing aspects that we know customers respond effectively to." Here are some little-known tricks Primark shoppers should know about… 1. CAFES FOR 'DWELL TIME' Primark serves over a million shoppers every day in more than 400 worldwide stores and racks up over £5billion in annual revenue. And experts claim they try to keep customers in store for as long as possible. Speaking on the Channel 5 documentary Primark: How Do They Do It? Consumer journalist Harry Wallop said: 'It's a phrase used in the retail industry 'dwell time'. 'You don't want people to just come in and buy an item and leave. 'You want someone to come in, look for the item, think 'that looks like a nice cafe. I'll stop there, I'll then buy something else'. 'On the way you spot another bit of homewares, it's only £5. 'If you can increase the dwell time you are onto a winning formula and you have justified the high expense of operating a high street store.' Spanning 160,000 square feet spread over five floors, the Birmingham store - their biggest worldwide - is certainly a destination in itself. It also boasts a hairdresser salon, nail bar, eyebrow grooming and a barber's. 2. NO-BRAINER PRICES While some people head in stores for the haul items, others go just for the store's 'basics'. psychologist Dr Amna Khana added: 'Primark's essential components of their products are generally built on basic, staple products that don't necessarily always change.' Retail consultant Nicole Higgins continued: 'Generally with clothing, 20 per cent of your range will make up 80 per cent of your sales. 'If you go into Primark's lingerie department, they will have hundreds of styles, lots and lots of different colours but probably the items that are making the most amount of money are the five-pack knickers, the basic T-shirt bras. 'They are the core bread-and-butter products.' 3. DELIBERATELY FOLDED ITEMS 4 In any Primark store, you will often see a fair amount of clothing items folded on shelves. While you may think this is done to save space, it's actually just another way to get shoppers to part with more cash. Dr Jansson-Boyd said: "When items are folded, shoppers can't fully see what it is until they go and pick it up and unfold it. "It is well-known that once consumers touch an item, they take on psychological ownership. "This increases the likelihood of purchase as they feel that the item belongs to them." 4. TILL TEMPTATION 4 If you're an avid Primark shopper, you'll know that you can often spend just as long waiting in the queue as you do browsing the store. But Dr Jansson-Boyd said the technique of "funnelling" people to line up along the tills gives shoppers more time to grab a last-minute item, such as socks, face wipes and shopper bags. She explained: "Along the funnel, there are various small bits and pieces that tend to have a broader appeal. "And as people get bored waiting, they often pick up additional items as they are readily there. "Some of those items are sweets – which people buy as an added treat for a job well done." 5. TRENDY DECOR Primark stores are lively, bright and feel quite youthful - and this is all intentional, Dr Jansson-Boyd said. "The stores use cues for their younger target markets. "This includes neon type signs and slogans on signage such as 'find your amazing'. "This suggests that you can be fabulous by buying something from Primark. "This is the type of messaging that Gen-Z responds effectively to." 6. NO CLOCKS OR WINDOWS 4 Ever find yourself losing track of time when you are browsing in Primark? It turns out that the lack of clocks or windows can be strategic in the retail world. Retail expert Burt Flickinger, told CNN: 'Windowless shopping creates an environment of consumption without distractions. 'When people have a sense of timelessness and comfort, families spend more because they can focus just on the stores and the mall experience.' 7. SOCIAL MEDIA GAME You may have been influenced to spend more at Primark before you even set foot in the shop, according to their own team. Finance director John Bason at Associated British Food, which owns Primark, told Drapers: 'One of the main areas where Primark has got stronger is driving our footfall through social media. 'On Instagram we're up to nearly 7 million followers, which allows for targeted marketing. 'A number of our collaborations have worked very well, including with [influencer] Alice Liveing, and we are working on future collections with others for this year.'
