Celtics' Jayson Tatum is the latest of many star athletes who've torn an Achilles tendon

The diagnosis of a torn Achilles tendon for All-Star forward Jayson Tatum is a devastating blow to the defending champion Boston Celtics and the second injury of its kind during the NBA playoffs.
Seven-time all-NBA guard Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks tore his left Achilles tendon during a loss to the Indiana Pacers on April 28.

The 27-year-old Tatum tore his right Achilles tendon on Monday night against the New York Knicks when he lunged toward a loose ball and his leg gave out. He buried his face in a towel in obvious pain while grabbing at his leg above the ankle after the non-contact injury.
The Knicks won 121-113 to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals. The series resumes Wednesday in Boston with the Celtics needing to win to stay alive in the playoffs.

Aaron Rodgers
The four-time NFL MVP tore his left Achilles tendon on Sept. 11, 2023, four snaps into his first year with the New York Jets. He was hurt as he tried to avoid a rushing Leonard Floyd, who wrapped up the quarterback and spun him down to the MetLife Stadium turf. Rodgers, 39 at the time, returned to practice in an astonishing 77 days after surgery but did not play again until Sept. 9, 2024. The Jets released him in March, and he's undecided on playing in 2025.

Kobe Bryant
The late Basketball Hall of Famer tore an Achilles tendon on April 12, 2013, had surgery the next day and returned to the court with the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 8, 2013, at age 35. Bryant played only six games before a knee injury forced him to miss the rest of the season. Bryant averaged 22.3 points in only 35 games in 2014-15 and 17.6 points in 66 games in his last season in 2015-16.
Kevin Durant
The two-time NBA Finals MVP tore an Achilles tendon on June 13, 2019, playing for Golden State in Game 4 of the championship round. He missed a full season and came back with the Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 22, 2020, at age 32. Durant hasn't played more than 55 games in any season since his return but he's been elite, averaging 28.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.7 assists in three seasons since the injury.

Dominique Wilkins
The Basketball Hall of Famer tore an Achilles tendon on Jan. 28, 1992. He returned to the court with the Atlanta Hawks on Nov. 6, 1992, just two months shy of turning 33. Wilkins averaged 29.9 points in his first season back and played seven more years, including two stints overseas.
Brandon Graham
The Philadelphia Eagles defensive end tore an Achilles tendon on Sept. 19, 2021, and returned for the season opener Sept. 11, 2022, at age 34. Graham had his best season as a pro last year, posting a career-high 11 sacks.
Ryan Howard
The 2006 NL MVP tore an Achilles tendon on the final swing of a postseason series on Oct. 7, 2011. Howard returned to the lineup with the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6, 2012, at age 32. The big slugger was never the same, however. Howard averaged 44 homers and 133 RBIs in a six-year span before the injury. He averaged 19/66 over the next five.

After all, he's one of the highest-rated players in the video game. "It means the world. A game I grew up playing since I was young and can remember," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "To know I'm the cover of the game is a surreal feeling. A dream come true." Gilgeous-Alexander is an unapologetic 2K head. He always talks to Ronnie 2K about the game and gives him feedback. After hoping to land on cover art, the 27-year-old made it undeniable with such a historic season. "I was ecstatic. I was through the moon," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "Tried to hold back some tears." NBA 2K26 will release on Sept. 5. The annual game serves as a reminder to get basketball back in the mainstream after the offseason is about over. The Thunder and Gilgeous-Alexander will enter the 2025-26 season as a favorite to repeat as champions.

Candace Parker calls effort in WNBA All-Star Game 'awful'
Associated Press Seven-time WNBA All-Star Candace Parker was unimpressed by the effort in the All-Star Game. Parker criticized the game on a podcast that aired Wednesday, calling it 'awful.' 'Y'all cannot come out there with those shirts of 'Pay Us What You Owe Us' and then do that,' Parker told All-Star Aliyah Boston on their new podcast 'Post Moves.' Parker was referencing the warmup shirts both teams wore at the July 19 game in response to failed collective-bargaining negotiations with the league earlier that week. Players are fighting for higher pay and better benefits, among other improvements. The game set a WNBA All-Star record for points scored and Napheesa Collier set the individual scoring mark with 36 points. Team Collier beat Team Clark 151-131. Defense was at a minimum as the league's stars allowed each other to get shots up without contest. It wasn't unlike the all-star games across other pro leagues, but Parker was looking for more from WNBA players at a time when they're in the spotlight. 'I think on one of the biggest stages, in an All-Star setting that was invested in more than any other All-Star game previously. … I think it would've really maximized the moment.' Fever forward Boston, who played on Team Clark, defended the performance of her and her peers. 'An All-Star Game, where we have another game in two days, I think that it's OK to just go out there and hoop and have some fun,' she said. Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field to Host 2027 MLB All-Star Game
Get ready for another edition of the Midsummer Classic at the friendly confines in 2027. The Chicago Cubs and MLB announced Friday that the 2027 All-Star Game will take place at Wrigley Field. The game will be played July 13, 2027, as the culmination of All-Star Week festivities. The 97th edition of the All-Star Game will be the fourth hosted at Wrigley Field. The American League won the previous meetings at iconic stadium in 1947, 1962 and 1990. "I applaud the Ricketts family, the entire Cubs organization, the City of Chicago and the Chicago Sports Commission for presenting an impressive vision for 2027 All-Star Week," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said. "The hard work put in to transform all of Wrigleyville into an outstanding destination deserves to be celebrated and shared on a national stage. The 2026 contest will take place at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies, to mark the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. The Phillies' former home, Veterans Stadium, hosted the All-Star Game in 1976 to honor the nation's bicentennial. "We look forward to bringing the Midsummer Classic back to historic Wrigley Field and working alongside the Cubs, city and state officials, and the local organizing group to bring an extraordinary experience to the baseball fans of Chicago," Manfred added.
