SMM dismisses viral jet photo claims, cites cleared inquiry
Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Mineral Management Sdn Bhd (SMM) has dismissed allegations arising from a viral photo showing its CEO and company secretary near a private jet, confirming it was taken during a sanctioned work trip tied to foreign investment discussions. The company clarified that the photo, taken in August 2024, was from a follow-up visit to an Indonesian mining conglomerate after the Board-approved due diligence process initiated by its former CEO in early 2023.
Advertisement SMM stated that both CEO Natasha Sim and company secretary Emily Chong had already cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission last December, with an internal inquiry in February 2025 finding no misconduct or personal benefit involved. It emphasised that the CEO holds no licensing authority, and strongly refuted any claims of wrongdoing, calling the allegations misleading and defamatory. SMM believes the renewed attention may be linked to the ongoing legal action it has filed against two individuals, and warned it will take legal steps against those who continue to spread baseless claims. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Police cripple lottery scam syndicate, seven arrested
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have dismantled a lottery scam syndicate believed to be involved in at least 15 cases across several states. The group has duped multiple victims of nearly RM200,000 to date. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said seven individuals were arrested during six separate raids around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on July 4. "The syndicate allegedly preyed on victims by posing as lottery winners, offering to share prize money before tricking them into handing over valuables and ATM cards. "Those arrested include a local man, two Indonesian men and two Indonesian women believed to be the main suspects, along with two other locals, a gold shop owner and a salesperson," Rusdi said today. He said the group would ask their victims for help in directing them to the nearest lottery shop so that they could collect their winnings. "They would promise to share RM15,000 of their winnings in exchange for their help," he said.

Passengers clash after noise complaint on Kuala Lumpur-Chengdu flight
Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: A still from a video of the incident. - Social media KUALA LUMPUR: A mid-air brawl erupted on an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Chengdu after a group of women allegedly refused to stop making noise while cabin lights were dimmed. The incident took place on an Airbus A320 that departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6.11pm on Monday and landed at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport at 10.13pm, The Daily Mail reported. The trouble began when a man seated behind the women asked them to keep quiet, prompting a verbal exchange that escalated after he reportedly called them 'stupid' and told them to 'shut up.' Footage from the flight shows a woman in green and a baseball cap leaning over the seat and repeatedly punching the man, who shielded himself behind his tray table. A passenger who recorded the incident said the fight broke out midway through the four-hour journey when the women ignored requests to lower their voices. She added that one woman's mother joined the argument and two women physically attacked the man, blaming cabin crew for not defusing the situation earlier. Although the cabin crew eventually intervened and calmed the passengers, Chinese police were waiting at the airport to question those involved. Authorities from the Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department have launched an investigation, though it remains unclear whether any arrests were made. - Malay Mail * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
