
Victoria's Secret faces fresh activist fight from Barington Capital, source says
The New York-based hedge fund, which owns more than 1% of the company, believes Victoria's Secret has underperformed its competitors and lost value since its spin-off from former parent company L Brands in 2021, the person said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private.
Amid waning demand for its intimate apparel, Victoria's Secret shares have dropped by about 55% this year, and its current market value is about $1.45 billion.
The Wall Street Journal reported Barington's plans earlier on Sunday. A Victoria's Secret spokesperson said that Barington has not contacted the company, but it looks forward to "discussing their views with them."
"We are confident that executing our strategy under the new and experienced leadership team will continue to unlock value for our shareholders," the spokesperson said.
Barington wants the company to replace most or all of its board and end the "poison pill" plan that it adopted in May to protect it from hostile takeovers. It also believes the retailer should focus on core brands and initiatives, like bras and the Angels campaign, and accelerate growth in digital and international markets, the source said.
Barington believes the company's Chief Executive Hillary Super, who took over in September 2024, has limited public company experience, and that the rest of the board lacks the necessary experience to revitalize the iconic brand, the person said. Super was previously the CEO of intimates brand Savage X Fenty.
The fund also sees value in the Victoria's Secret beauty business, which it believes could be worth as much as the company's market value.
Victoria's Secret adopted the poison pill plan to fend off investment firm BBRC International Private Limited, which increased its stake in the company to around 13%.
Barington is also an investor in Macy's and Hanesbrands.
Founded by James Mitarotonda, Barington previously pushed for changes at L Brands, which split into Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works. At Macy's, the firm wanted the department store to create a real estate unit and cut costs to boost the share price.
Earlier this year, Barington mounted its first full-blown board room challenge since 2015 when it tried to put three directors on the board of casket maker Matthews International but ended up losing the vote.

The world's hunger for energy is showing no signs of slowing. Here's how to profit
There has been a renewed growth in demand for energy in developed markets, reversing a multi-decade trend where this had been offset by energy saving initiatives. In 2024, investors cottoned onto the vast power requirements of the data centres being built to support the explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI). AI chips use more power than conventional ones, and even with the slight setback earlier this year when the success of China's DeepSeek suggested that AI could be less power hungry than had been predicted, AI-related demand for power is still growing. The shift towards electric vehicles is progressing faster in some markets than others (in China, for example, over half of new cars sold in May 2025 were hybrids or electric), but again the trend is towards additional demand for power. Similarly, efforts being made to decarbonise domestic heating and industry are another source of demand. Meeting the additional demand for power means investing in generation, but this takes time and is putting upward pressure on power prices. This also means that additional investment is needed to expand the capacity on badly constrained electricity grids. In many countries, there is also recognition of the need to tackle a backlog in infrastructure investment. The steps that Germany is taking to unlock hundreds of billions of funds for areas such as transport, education, hospitals and energy projects illustrate that. There are vast sums of private capital ready to be deployed, too. The likes of KKR, Brookfield, Macquarie, Blackstone and BlackRock have raised more than $100bn (£740m)of fresh capital over the past year. One probable beneficiary is the Ecofin Global Utilities and Infrastructure investment trust, which was last discussed here back in August 2019. Clearly, a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, but the trust remains a good way for investors to access this asset class. In share price total return terms, the trust has done well, with a return of 83pc versus 80pc for the MSCI World Index for the period from the beginning of August 2019 to the end of May 2025. Remarkably, it has achieved this with only minimal help from the utilities and infrastructure sectors – the return on the MSCI World Utilities index over that period was 39pc, while the return on the S&P Global Infrastructure Index was 35pc. That speaks to the skill of the trust's manager Jean-Hugues de Lamaze. The share price has not risen in a straight line over the last six years. The trust was caught up in the Covid-related market panic in March 2020, and it was not until the end of that year that it surpassed its February 2020 high. It then powered ahead, peaking in September 2022 before succumbing to the effects of higher interest rates. However, it has been climbing for over a year now, and Questor believes that it could hit new highs later this year. Over the course of 2025, relative to benchmark indices, Ecofin Global Utilities and Infrastructure has benefited from favouring Europe over the US. Ahead of the election, Biden's Inflation Reduction Act looked set to catalyse a wave of infrastructure investment in the US. However, President Trump has called a halt to much of this. At the end of May 2025, the largest holdings in the trust's portfolio were Germany's the UK's National Grid and French construction and infrastructure giant Vinci. sold off its power generation assets some years ago, and is now a play on the need for investment in Germany's power grid. It is a regulated business, which makes its earnings more defensive and predictable (National Grid has similar qualities), while Vinci runs motorways and airports. In all three cases, de Lamaze felt the market was undervaluing their earnings potential. Recent additions to the portfolio include the Spanish airport business Aena, which owns Luton Airport, and Flughafen Zurich, which is just about to open a new airport to serve Delhi in India, with four terminals and six runways, just five and a half years after it won the contract to develop it. Many investors tend to shun utilities and infrastructure businesses, labelling them as boring, low growth and too sensitive to interest rates. Questor feels that Ecofin Global Utilities and Infrastructure's track record demonstrates that even if some of that is true for the sector as a whole, a good active manager can still generate outsized returns. Just think what de Lamaze might be able to achieve if sentiment towards the sector improved.

Tesla sales hit three-year low as Musk feuds with Trump
Sales at Elon Musk's Tesla have fallen to a three-year low amid the billionaire's public spat with Donald Trump. The electric carmaker said customer deliveries fell by 13.5pc in the second quarter of the year, a period in which Mr Musk left his role in the White House and publicly fell out with the US president over his tax and spending bill. Sales were 384,122 between April and June, down from 443,956 compared to the same quarter a year ago. It is the second straight double-digit drop in quarterly deliveries for Tesla, meaning sales for the year so far are at their lowest since 2022. The figures put Tesla on track for a second successive year of declining sales. Falling demand in recent months has been blamed partially on a political backlash against Mr Musk over his support for Mr Trump. However, growing competition from low-cost Chinese manufacturers has also threatened Tesla's grip on the electric vehicle (EV) market, with Shenzhen-based BYD overtaking Tesla in sales across Britain and Europe in recent months. Driverless taxis Meanwhile, Mr Musk has also increasingly focused on Tesla's efforts on his Robotaxi project. The company last week started offering driverless taxi rides in Texas, and Mr Musk has said Tesla will begin production of a Cybercab next year. The decline in Tesla's sales led to heightened scrutiny of Mr Musk's work at the White House, where he sat in on cabinet meetings and spearheaded the department of government efficiency (Doge). This prompted some Tesla investors to raise concerns that Mr Musk was not focused enough on running the company. In April, Tesla revealed that quarterly sales had fallen by 13pc – its biggest drop since 2012. Investors had hoped that an upgrade to its best-selling Model Y would revive sales, but the drop in the second quarter was almost as severe. 'Disgusting abomination' Tensions between Mr Musk and Mr Trump exploded in the last month, shortly after the South African-born businessman stepped down from the White House. The Tesla boss, who described Mr Trump's 'big beautiful bill' as a 'disgusting abomination', previously claimed the president should be impeached. Mr Trump hit back by threatening to cancel federal contracts for Mr Musk's rocket company, SpaceX. The two briefly held a truce, but the row was reignited this week when Mr Musk threatened to start a new political party and Mr Trump suggested he could deport him. Mr Musk has publicly criticised Mr Trump's bill for adding to the ballooning US deficit, but the legislation also cuts incentives for electric cars and renewable energy, which have boosted Tesla sales. The company's shares fell by 5pc on Tuesday amid the widening rift between the pair, although they rose on Wednesday because the sales drop was less severe than some analysts had feared. Mr Musk has predicted that Tesla will have millions of robotaxis in operation this year.

Discovery's shock split into two distinctive companies is a sign the jobs and hefty salaries of CNN 's top talent are on the line, media insiders have warned. The media giant announced last month it will halve into two publicly traded entities — Streaming & Studios and Global Networks — by mid-2026. Streaming & Studios' domain will be Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max. Global Networks, on the other hand, will be news focused, assuming CNN, TNT Sports and Discovery, among other programming. CEO David Zaslav will take on the leading role of the Streaming & Studios company, while CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels will become the President of Global Networks. This dramatic move could be detrimental to CNN, which is already grappling with plummeting ratings. 'Inevitably, Gunnar will look at CNN and decide he can maintain relatively similar profits at a mere fraction of the cost,' Dylan Byers, a former CNN reporter who now works for Puck, wrote in an opinion piece. While Cooper earns an estimated $18 million every year, Jake Tapper, who hosts The Lead with Jake Tapper, brings in roughly $7 million a year. CNN veteran Wolf Blitzer's salary is about $15 million. Collins earns about $3 million as a primetime anchor. In May, CNN had its second-worst month in its history in the essential 25 to 54-year-old age group in both daytime and primetime viewership, Fox reported. Since last year, the network ratings declined in all categories - and the matter may only get worse, experts believe. Over the upcoming year, Kagan, a research unit of S&P Global Market Intelligence, estimated CNN will lose subscribers and revenue despite the strategic split. Revenue is expected to plummet by $499.2 million, Variety reported. The insider source said the soon-to-be Global Networks CEO could slash CNN's costs by 50 to 60 percent with no impact on revenue or ratings. They believe Wiedenfels could 'start by making 70 percent cuts to all show teams for CNN US, bringing their staffing in line with that of their competition,' before slashing talent salaries. 'But it will be most devastating for the rank and file. With no union protections, there will be massive layoffs and those remaining will be asked to do the work of their departed colleagues,' they explained. Although no layoffs or budget cuts have been set in stone, uncertainty looms among CNN staffers.
