Former Spartan and brother of MSU head coach lands AHL head coaching job
A former Spartan, and brother of head coach Adam Nightingale, is getting his shot at a professional hockey head coaching job.
Jared Nightingale spent 2002-2006 patrolling the blue line in East Lansing, before going on to have a 13-year professional playing career. Now, at 41-years-old, he is following in his older brother's footsteps as a coach in the sport.
Nightingale has now been hired by the Rockford IceHogs, the AHL affiliate for the Chicago Blackhawks, propelling his career in a very favorable motion forward.
In his coaching career, Nightingale has served as an assistant coach for the Omaha Lancers of the USHL, the OHL's Flint Firebirds and Saginaw Spirit, and the IceHogs. He got his first taste of a head coaching gig in the 2024-25 season, running the bench for the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays, where he won the Brabham Cup and was South Division champions with a 52-15-3 record.
Having the opportunity to head coach in the AHL will be massive for Nightingale, who will most likely be able to parlay that into an NHL or NCAA gig, if he chooses to do so.

Broncos LT Garett Bolles praises OLB Nik Bonitto: 'He never quits'

Nik Bonitto is coming off the best season of his football career. The 25-year-old pass rusher made the Pro Bowl and was named a second-team All-Pro in 2024 after totaling 24 quarterback hits, 16 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, 13.5 sacks and two defensive touchdowns (one pick-six and one fumble returned for a score). Now approaching his fourth season in the NFL, Bonitto appears to be entering his prime, and Denver Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles has been full of praise for his daily opponent at practice. 'The dude has what it takes to be great," Bolles said when asked about Bonitto in June. "I pull him and 'Coop' (OLB Jonathon Cooper) to the side all the time and I say, 'You guys can be the best in the league.' They have high motors. He doesn't give up. It's a special talent to be able to time up a snap count and be able to jump it. It scares tackles. I get to go up against that every single day, so it's a great battle for me and puts me on my 'A' game every single day. "Just what he does day in and day out, he never quits. He's so smooth with it. He can bend, he can rip. He has power. It's just really cool to see him grow up and become something that tackles fear and teams have to prepare for him. I'm proud of him, and I love him dearly. I think the sky's the limit for him.' Bolles, who also has a second-team All-Pro on his resume, is a key player for the Broncos, and he's respected across the league as a quality left tackle. Bolles faces each team's best pass rusher on a week-to-week basis. He knows what the league's top talents look like, and Bonitto is entering that territory. That's great for Denver's defense -- and it's great for Bolles to get daily practice reps against a formidable edge defender. Bonitto's stock is certainly trending up going into his contract year. Nebraska women's basketball alum Isabella Bourne shines in Asia Cup play

Nebraska women's basketball alum Isabella Bourne was a key piece in helping the Australian national team capture the FIBA Asia Cup title earlier this week. Bourne tallied eight points and three rebounds in the championship game, putting the final stamp on what was an impressive stretch of play. All told, she averaged 6.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal per game during the tournament. Australia required a 5-0 record in the process. She was able to do it all for the Opals on Sunday. She had to three-point shots and was perfect from the free throw line. She had two assists, one steal, and a blocked shot in just over 11 minutes of play. This should come as no surprise to Huskers fans, as she displayed that type of consistency while in Lincoln. She scored 1,221 points during her tenure with the program and served as a three-time co-captain. She also proved to be effective on the boards, snagging 648 rebounds in four seasons. ESPN believes that Notre Dame will have a very early swing game for the 2025 season

If you haven't looked ahead to what Notre Dame football's first few weeks of the 2025 season look like, it's a very front-loaded schedule. The Irish open the season on the road against Miami, then hosting Texas A&M in the home opener. Starting the season against two ranked teams will be a big test for Notre Dame, and ESPN believes that the first game of the year will be its swing game. Mark Schlabach went into details on why this is such an important game for the Irish as he said 'Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman won't have to wait long to learn if his team is a CFP (College Football Playoff) national title contender.' He isn't wrong, and due to the fact that this 'will be a tremendous test for Notre Dame's new starting quarterback, presumably redshirt freshman CJ Carr,' as Schlabach said, it won't be an easy contest. Unfortunately for Freeman, he hasn't done all that well early in the season, in his first the Irish lost the initial two games, then his second was much better, but the competition wasn't nearly at the same level. Last year Northern Illinois knocked off the Irish in the second game, but Notre Dame did win the opener on the road against A&M. There will be a much different focus for the Irish this coming fall, as the expectations for the program have risen significantly due to its impressive 2024 run in the CFP. Don't expect Freeman to ask Carr or even Kenny Minchey to do all that much in the opener, as they'll both still be getting their feet wet at this level. He'll lean on the elite defense, and hopefully the Irish return to South Bend with an early swing game victory.
