Sangoma shocks Vanderbijlpark court with guilty plea in toddler's kidnapping and murder
What was meant to be a brief appearance for the second suspect in the kidnapping case of toddler Kutlwano Shalaba quickly turned into drama when the sangoma arrested in connection with the case revealed significant information.
Sedibeng Ster reports that Sebokoane Khanyane (50) stunned the packed Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court this morning when he told the magistrate, 'I'm guilty', during his appearance alongside the toddler's accused mother, Keneilwe Shalaba.
The traditional healer, facing charges of human trafficking and premeditated murder, was arrested last Thursday, following an ongoing investigation by Boipatong SAPS detectives.
His arrest led to a gruesome discovery of a lifeless body buried in a shallow grave at Waterpan Road in Bekkersdal.
The toddler was initially reported missing by his mother in November last year. Investigations, however, revealed that the mother was involved in the disappearance of her child.
She was arrested on charges of human trafficking, making a false statement to the police, and conspiracy to commit robbery.
In court, when asked about his legal representation, Khanyane casually told the magistrate he was guilty, before quickly changing his mind and requesting a state attorney.
Addressing the media following the appearance, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said: 'A charge of premeditated murder was also added to the mother.
'Investigations at the time suggested that the mother might have sold the child to the sangoma, but as it stands, the investigators are suggesting other things rather than selling. More charges might be added against both the accused.'
In court, the sangoma's rights were explained to him. He told the court he was pleading guilty, however, the court quickly told him that it was not the right platform to plead yet.
Shalaba and Khoanyana are expected back in court on Thursday.

A peaceful night turned harrowing for families at a McDonald's in Durbanville when armed robbers targeted two vehicles in the restaurant's drive-through lane, leaving victims injured and traumatised. Families have voiced serious frustration over McDonald's alleged inaction. Staff at the branch reportedly did not contact police, leaving victims to report the crimes themselves. Repeated attempts to engage McDonald's management and corporate offices have so far gone unanswered. 'We're just grateful they weren't killed,' said the wife of one victim. 'But this could've ended much worse, and it's unacceptable that businesses are not doing more to protect their customers.' Former Transnet bosses charged over Jacob Zuma-era graft case
Four former executives at South Africa's failing transport company were arrested and charged on Monday over allegations of corruption worth millions of dollars in a high-profile case linked to the plunder of state resources. The ports and freight rail company Transnet was among the state-owned firms caught in a widespread graft scandal that rocked ex-president Jacob Zuma's government between 2010 and 2018. The web of corruption that hollowed out the companies is commonly referred to as 'state capture' in South Africa. The accused who appeared in court on Monday are former group chief executives Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gana, as well as the company's former CFO, Anoj Singh, and top engineer, Thamsanqa Jiyane. 'They are facing 18 charges that include the contravention of the Public Finance Management Act, fraud, corruption and the contravention of the Companies Act,' the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said. Their case relates to tenders issued during a plan to expand and modernise the country's rail infrastructure, the logistical backbone of the continent's most advanced economy. In one instance, the officials are accused of bypassing due process and awarding a tender to an unqualified Chinese firm for the supply of 95 trains, with the contract allegedly inflated by $13 million, NPA said. Molefe and Gama are currently serving as members of parliament under Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party. None of the accused has entered a plea. They were each granted a R50 000 bail, with the matter due back in court in October. Fort Hare bodyguard's murder: 2 arrested, third suspect on the run
Police have arrested two alleged hitmen in connection with the murder of Mboneli Vesele, who was the bodyguard of Fort Hare vice chancellor and principal, Prof Sakhele Buhlungu. The Witness reports that the other suspects were handcuffed in Zakariyya Park, south of Johannesburg, earlier in June. This brings the number of suspects arrested in connection with the Fort Hare murder to 12. Ten others have been arrested since 2023, with some still in police custody. Vesele was shot and killed inside a vehicle while waiting for the vice chancellor outside the principal's home in Alice, in the Eastern Cape, on January 6, 2023. Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says SAPS put out a call to the public for information linked to the murder. On November 15, 2024, the SAPS published the alleged hitmen's photographs and a request to the public for assistance in tracking down the three wanted suspects after obtaining a J50 warrant of arrest for Bafana Chiliza, Nkosiyazi 'Dipopoz' Maphumulo and Siphiwo 'Spijojo' Jejane. 'On June 21, the team proceeded to Zakkariya Park in Johannesburg following intelligence and information from members of the public. Two of the three [alleged] hitmen were arrested. The SAPS confirms Bafana Chiliza and Nkosiyazi Maphumulo are in custody and will be charged accordingly,' Mathe says. She adds that the suspects are expected to appear in the Alice Magistrate's Court today, and police are still searching for the third alleged hitman, Siphiwo Jejane.
