George Russell facing anxious wait to discover if he has Mercedes seat next year
Mercedes have made little secret of their desire to sign the four-time world champion. As it stands, Russell – who despite a series of impressive performances this year – is without a deal for 2026.

Mercedes, however, would now be forced to buy Verstappen out of his Red Bull contract which runs until 2028 – and that could accelerate their decision to announce Russell will be retained.
But the PA news agency has been told by a source there are no plans for an official update on the British driver's future prior to Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.
A three-week break follows before the next round in the Netherlands on August 31.
Despite the continued speculation surrounding suggestions Verstappen could trade Red Bull for Mercedes, those close to the Russell camp have indicated for a number of weeks the 27-year-old is extremely confident of striking a contract extension.
And it would appear highly unlikely that a new deal with Mercedes will not be finalised.
Russell finished fifth on Sunday but Mercedes endured a difficult weekend in the Ardennes.
Russell's rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli's dismal run of form continued after he crossed the line in 16th.
The 18-year-old has scored points in just one of his last seven appearances. He was close to tears after qualifying on Saturday, admitting he was struggling with his confidence.

That prompted a visit from Lewis Hamilton to the Mercedes motorhome ahead of Sunday's race to offer the driver who replaced him some words of encouragement.
Hamilton started in the pit lane and drove from 18th to seventh but Antonelli – who also begun the rain-hit race from the pits – laboured and finished 52 seconds behind team-mate Russell.
Russell has scored 157 points to Antonelli's 63 after 13 of the 24 rounds. Mercedes are third in the constuctors' standings, 296 points adrift of McLaren.

He will have to be better prepared than he was in Atlanta - as he was nowhere near good enough. Everton appeared to feel they could force errors by putting him under pressure. This system will always see the most defensive midfielder exposed at times. 7 Manuel Ugarte endured an evening to forget Credit: Getty Kobbie Mainoo - 5 Amorim is adamant the England midfielder can make a genuine first team claim and that he is fitter and more mobile after the pre-season campaign. Yet it is hard to make the case that Mainoo has progressed over the past 12 months. Still not entirely sure what sort of player he is going to be or if he can fit this United shape.. Diogo Dalot - 6 Portuguese defender, one of the six-man 'leadership group', started on the left - although that would make him Dorgu's likely understudy. Did make one really key intervention in front of his own goal as simple centres from Everton left United looking more than vulnerable and happier when moved to the right for the second half. Bryan Mbeumo - 7 First outing in a United short for the £71m recruit from Brentford, who drifted off the right hand side with purpose and penetration. Superb instant switch of play led to the penalty and his willingness to forage on either flank was evidence that the Cameroonian will instantly upgrade United's forward threat. Saying that, the way he played in and around Mbeumo and Cunha suggested United might not have to sign the Slovenian to have real attacking threat, with Fernandes showing creativity and enterprise throughout although spat with Ndiaye was utterly needless. Matheus Cunha 7 The Brazilian was asked to fill the central attacking role, rather than playing off the front man, although the trident gave him the opportunity to roam at times. Prodded wide of the far post when he might have done better early on but the run in behind was excellent. The feeling remains he is a scorer of great goals more than a great goal scorer. Mason Mount (for Mainoo, 57) 8 Mount is desperate for an injury-free campaign and goals like he produced to put United back in front win this one will only help his cause. Terrific finish from 16 yards. Casemiro (for Ugarte, 72) 6 Brazilian cannot lose the pace he never had. And surely he is smarter and more streetwise than Ugarte. 6 Rasmus Hojlund (for Cunha, 72) 6 Dane knows his United days may be numbered, even if that is against his will. A high-flying FIFO worker has revealed how she earns a staggering $120,000 by working just six months of the year. Ashlea, 26, has attracted a massive online following documenting her life as a dump truck driver in the mines in Western Australia 's Pilbara region and jet-setting around the world on lavish holidays during her time off. Previously dubbed the 'world's hottest truck driver', she earns $120,000 a year working 14 days on and 14 days off in a job she says no one else wants. The average salary for a full-time worker in Australia is $102,742 per year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. After scoring a big promotion, Ashlea splashed out on her dream car - a Mercedes convertible, which she couldn't wait to show off to her 81,500 TikTok followers. 'I had this car on my vision board that I made about six years ago,' she said. 'Now I'm living my best Barbie dreams.' She attributed the dream purchase to her FIFO career. 'I have been waiting so long for this moment. I've driven a car I didn't love for the past six years, so I can finally drive this beautiful car,' she said. 'I feel so grateful and like a bad bi***.' Ashlea earned $36.50 an hour when she began working in the mines 'For my first year as a greenie (truck driver) I would have taken about $94,000 - 95,000 annually,' she previously explained. After her first year in the mines, she changed contractors and received a huge jump in pay as a result. She now earns at least $51.50 an hour and receives a $2,000 bonus for each month she stays with her employer. 'So that could be anywhere between $6,000 and $10,000 a month,' Ashlea said. 'Annually, my $51.50 would be approximately $112,000. With my bonuses, that could be another $10,000, so $122,000 for my first year. 'And then when I'm employed directly with the company itself, every full year you're employed through the mine site direct, they pay you a bonus also, which I think is approximately $3,000 each year. 'And then if the company itself does well, I think they actually pay you a bit of a profit share just as a thanks, which I love.' Ashlea spent Christmas in Finland and has since travelled to Paris and celebrated her birthday in Bali. 'Honestly, I feel so grateful for my life,' she captioned a recent TikTok clip. 'I have a beautiful partner. An amazing job. A stunning apartment. A wonderful family and group of friends. My dream car. 'I get to travel. Goals for the year ahead. Life is good. 'I don't write this to brag, but a reminder to do what brings you joy in life and take pleasure in doing it. Life is too short not to enjoy its magic.'
