
Himachal Flash Floods: 2 Highways & 305 Roads Shut, Orange Alert Issued For Monday

Moderate to heavy rain continued to lash parts of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in the closure of 307 roads, including two national highways on Sunday, officials said. Since Saturday evening, several regions have experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, with Bharari recording 108.2 mm, followed by Murari Devi with 82 mm, Naina Devi at 74.4 mm, Malraon at 56.2 mm, Brahmani at 45.4 mm, Una at 38 mm, and Jot at 36.2 mm.
A majority of 307 roads, 156, are in the disaster-affected Mandi district, while 68 are in Kullu district, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Additionally, 284 power distribution transformers and 210 water supply schemes have been affected across the state, the SEOC said.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20 until August 2, the state has incurred losses totalling Rs 1,692 crore. So far, there have been 101 reported deaths due to rain-related incidents, with 36 people still missing. The fatalities include 20 drownings, 19 deaths from falls, 17 deaths from cloudbursts, eight from flash floods, and five from landslides.
As many as 1,600 houses have been fully or partially damaged in the state. The state witnessed 51 flash floods, 28 cloudbursts and 45 major landslides, officials said.
What happened on Saturday?
A total of 404 roads, including the Khab-Gramphu National Highway, were closed to vehicular traffic in Himachal Pradesh as heavy rains lashed various parts of the state. Since Friday evening, Una recorded extremely heavy rainfall of 260.8 mm, the highest in the state, resulting in water accumulation on roads, in markets, and in other areas, severely impacting daily life.
Of these 404 roads, a maximum of 174 roads were closed in the disaster-hit Mandi district, followed by 111 in Chamba and 67 in Kullu, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).

Additionally, 411 power distribution transformers and 196 water supply schemes have been affected across the state.
The Chandigarh-Dharamshala National Highway has also experienced flooding in places, with water entering some residences, officials said. This flood-like situation has resulted in significant losses for the industrial sector, residential neighbourhoods, and government offices, reports stated.
The district magistrate urged residents to call the District Disaster Management Control Cell toll-free number 1077 in case of any emergency and avoid approaching pits and riverbanks.
Substantial damage occurred to development projects as well as government and private properties in various location. While the Beas River and its tributaries were flooded, a section of the bridge over the river near Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur district developed cracks.
Reports emerged of a partial breach in a cofferdam of the Malana-II Hydropower project due to flash floods, leading to the washing away of a dumper truck, a rock breaker, and a car in the past 24 hours. Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Saturday visited disaster-hit areas in Mandi district.

NEW DELHI: At least ten Army personnel have been reported missing after devastating cloudbursts triggered flash floods in the Harsil area of Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The missing soldiers were stationed at a camp in the lower Harsil region when the incident occurred, reported news agency ANI. Despite the tragedy hitting their own ranks, Troops joined relief operations on the ground, officials added. Resident Rajesh Panwar told PTI that the scale of destruction is unprecedented. "About 10-12 people could be buried under the debris. 20-25 hotels and homestays may have been washed away," he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to those affected by the tragedy and assured that relief efforts are under way with full force. 'I express my condolences to the people affected by this tragedy in Dharali, Uttarkashi. Along with this, I pray for the well-being of all the victims. I have spoken to Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami ji and obtained information about the situation. Under the supervision of the state government, relief and rescue teams are engaged in every possible effort. No stone is being left unturned in providing assistance to the people,' the Prime Minister wrote on X.

453 roads closed in Himachal as heavy rain continues, Mandi receives over 150 mm of rainfall
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district received more than 150 mm of rainfall in the past 12 hours with cloudbursts, landslides and flash floods battering the region, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) informed on Tuesday. As heavy rains continue to lash the state, 453 roads including four national highways have been closed for vehicular traffic, it said adding that road connectivity between Kullu and Mandi districts has been obstructed due to landslides. The highest number of closed roads, 321, are in Mandi followed by 68 in Kullu district. Mandi-Jogindernagar road (NH 154), Mandi-Kullu road (NH 21), Mandi-Dharampur road (NH 3) and Aut to Sainj road (NH 305) were closed for vehicular movement on Monday, the SEOC added. The NH 21 Mandi to Kullu is blocked at nine mile and Pandoh. The alternate route from Mandi to Kullu via Kamand is blocked at Baragal Nalla with a large number of vehicles are stranded en route. Restoration works are underway, officials said. Water entered a few houses in Dadur area of Balh valley in Mandi district due to absence of proper drainage on Kiratpur-Manali four lane, reports reaching here said. "Every year water floods nearby houses in absence of a proper drainage system and despite local administration and National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) authorities being appraised several times nothing has been done so far except formality", resident Sunil Kumar said. A drain in Mehatpur town of the Una district overflowed due to sudden floods after heavy rains swept away a person trying to cross the drain. The person is yet to be identified. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is engaged in search and rescue operations. However, no clue of the missing person is found so far. Of these, 106 deaths were caused by rain-related calamities such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, and drownings, while 86 people lost their lives in road accidents during the same period. The SDMA's cumulative monsoon damage report, released on August 5, highlights the extent of devastation caused by relentless rain.
