ABCA names Auburn baseball's Butch Thompson Southeast Region Coach of the Year
Butch Thompson wins coach of the year award after leading the Tigers back to the postseason.
The 2025 season was a great turnaround for the Auburn Tigers baseball after a disappointing 2024 season. Auburn posted a 41-20 record and ended the season in the Super Regional versus eventual national runners-up Coastal Carolina. That type of season has resulted in head coach Butch Thompson being honored. On Tuesday, Thompson was named the Southeast Region Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Thompson is the first Auburn coach to lead the Tigers to four region championships. He did so in 2018, 2019, and 2022 before this past season. It was the first time in Auburn baseball history that the school hosted a Super Regional. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not get past the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina lost in the 2025 College Baseball World Series Final to the LSU Tigers.
The SEC was tough as always, and the Tigers held their own, going 17-13. That record earned the Tigers a sixth-place finish in the best conference in college baseball. Auburn earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA College Baseball Tournament and finished ranked No. 13 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. All of that also resulted in six Auburn players making the All-SEC Team.
On the statistical side of things, the Tigers finished third in the SEC with a batting average of .304. It was a historic season for Thompson, winning his 300th game as the head coach of the Tigers. In his ten seasons, he has posted a record of 324-232-1 with six postseason appearances. With the success of the 2025 season, the 2026 season should bring a lot of excitement with Thompson leading the program for an 11th season.

Davis Thompson makes three eagles in just eight holes at Rocket Classic
The skies were clear but lightning figuratively struck twice Saturday at Detroit Golf Club as a second golfer in the 2025 Rocket Classic made three eagles in one round. Atlanta native Davis Thompson, 26, became the second golfer in two days to drop three eagles in a single round at the PGA Tour's Rocket Classic in Detroit during Saturday's action. Before Philip Knowles did it Friday in the second round, the feat had never been accomplished during the previous six years of the Rocket. It had only happened once on the PGA Tour in 2025: Chandler Phillips did it in Round 1 at the Players Championship. Thompson's three eagles were even more rare because all three came on the front nine — in his first eight holes. Thompson, who started the day at 8-under, six shots back of the leaders, had his first eagle on the first hole, where he hit a 303-yard drive. His 80-yard wedge fell in for a deuce on the short par-4. He sank a birdie on the par-5 fourth, bogeyed Nos. 5 and 6, and then made back-to-back eagles on the par-5 seventh and short par-4 eighth. No. 7 has been a popular eagle this week, and Thompson took advantage. A 316-yard drive and 234-yard approach shot gave him a 37-foot putt, which he drained to recover from the bogeys. The 352-yard par-4 eighth hole is guarded by sand traps on each side, and though many players have birdied it, Thompson defeated the hole by simply driving the ball 344 yards to 7 feet. He capitalized with his third eagle of the day to climb to 5 under par on the round and 13-under total. He bogeyed the par-3 ninth to shoot a 4-under 32 on the front. Thompson then bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 No. 10. Thompson moved up 32 spots with his performance on the front nine and inside the top 10 as the leaders teed off. Clemson's offensive, defensive rankings in EA's College Football 26 revealed
Clemson fans looking forward to EA Sports College Football 25 should have plenty to smile about when they fire up the game. In the latest round of team ratings, EA Sports has Clemson starting the year ranked No. 7 overall with an 88 team rating. That's thanks to a balanced roster that boasts the fifth-best offense in the game (89) and a top-10 defense (No. 10, 90). On top of that, Memorial Stadium will be one of the toughest places to play in the virtual world — EA previously ranked Death Valley as the sixth-hardest environment in the game, giving the Tigers a solid home-field boost when you're trying to protect a lead or swing momentum. Clemson's in-game schedule won't be a cakewalk, either. Right out of the gates, players will face No. 10 LSU, who comes in with an 86 team rating and strong balance themselves — the Tigers from Baton Rouge have the No. 6 offense and No. 8 defense. Other ranked matchups on Clemson's slate include SMU (No. 19 overall, 84 team rating, No. 15 offense), Duke (No. 23 overall, 84, No. 16 defense) and South Carolina (No. 24 overall, 82, No. 25 offense and No. 22 defense).
