‘Janaki V vs State of Kerala' box office collections day 3: Suresh Gopi's film mints Rs 2.91 crores; weekend momentum slows
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) After a promising start at the box office, 'JSK - Janaki V vs State of Kerala' has wrapped up its first Saturday with an estimated Rs 81 lakhs in India net collections, bringing its 3-day total to Rs 2.91 crore. While the film saw a slight dip compared to its opening day, its overall performance still reflects a decent run. Occupancy grows steadily through the day As reported by the Sacnilk website, on Saturday (Day 3), the film registered an overall 16.72% occupancy across Malayalam screens. Though the morning shows saw a low turnout at 5.61%, viewership steadily increased. It peaked at 28.52% during night shows. Key regions like Kochi (31% night occupancy) and Chennai (36%) showed better engagement. Meanwhile Bengaluru maintained a consistent pace with a respectable 27.75% overall occupancy. Audience response remains moderate but supportive Directed by Pravin Narayanan, the courtroom drama features Suresh Gopi in a powerful role alongside Shruthi Ramachandran, Anupama Parameswaran, and Divya Pillai. Janaki V vs State Of Kerala - Official Trailer The first reviews for the Suresh Gopi starrer are mixed and ETimes gave the movie a rating of 2.5 stars out of 5. An excerpt from our review reads, "The film does suffer from its length and a muddled screenplay. A tighter, crisper edit would have served it better. While Suresh Gopi's monologues are familiar to Malayali audiences, they could have been trimmed without taking anything away from the film. Towards the climax, the lengthy dialogues become long-winded and, frankly, grating so close to the resolution. Some awkward English dialogues also stand out. That Pravin resists opting for a 'socially acceptable' ending, however, makes the film watchable." Despite being a serious genre with niche appeal, 'JSK' has found a steady urban audience. However, the film will need stronger word-of-mouth and a weekend push to improve its chances in the coming weekdays.

Not against Vedan, but discuss academic subjects as required: SUCC
T'puram: Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) has denied the allegation that it opposed the inclusion of the work of rapper Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, in the Calicut University Malayalam literature syllabus. Committee chairperson R S Sasikumar said that the lack of academic common sense in asking BA Malayalam students to compare the music of Michael Jackson and Vedan should not be viewed as a plot against the rapper. "Vedan is an emerging artist in Kerala. Let the young man grow. Do not cast a shadow over his future by dragging him into controversies. Discuss academic subjects as academic subjects," the committee said. "Vedan's rap and Michael Jackson's pop are unique musical blends. Music is prioritised over poetry. Those creating the Malayalam BA syllabus should not ignore this. The most important issue is whether the rap song given as a study subject for students is appropriate for Malayalam degree students. The rap 'Bhoomi Njan Vazhunnaidam' cannot be claimed to have literary merit. There is an allegation that party politics is the reason for its inclusion," SUCC said in a statement here. SUCC also said that it is unclear whether literature and rap music should be compared. "Kuchelavritham was written by Muringoor Shankaran Potty. It depicts the devotional singing of the poor Brahmin Kuchelan during his great meeting with his friend Lord Krishna. Many great artists have performed this before, with slight variations, devoutly. Young singer Gauri Lakshmi beautifully sang this Kathakali Padam and released an album. However, its visual presentation has been criticised for not aligning with devotion and not being suitable for Kuchelavritham," the statement said. "But that's not the issue. Comparing these two renditions requires significant musical understanding. How can students who take Malayalam as an optional subject without a music requirement make this comparison? This could definitely be included in the syllabus for music degree students studying classical music," the committee said.

Hectic parleys begins as new AMMA office bearers to be elected on Aug 15
Kochi; Ever since the explosive Hema Committee report surfaced last year, the affairs in the Malayalam film actors body -- Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has been fluid. Things went for a toss after the incumbent Secretary of AMMA -- popular actor Siddique resigned after a former actress pointed fingers at him of misbehaviour. Soon thereafter names of other actors also surfaced accusing them of similar behaviour. Seeing all this the AMMA President Mohanlal made it clear that he was not keen to continue, forcing the entire 17-member executive to resign. Following this, the committee under Mohanlal was asked to continue in the capacity of ad hoc committee until fresh elections are held. At the recently held annual general body, the decision was made that on August 15 a new executive should be appointed through a democratic process. Now with the last date of nomination coming up on July 24 and on July 31 it will be known if there is going to be voting. With around 500 members in AMMA, it's going to be a race against time as hectic parleys have started on the name of candidates who will be going to contest. With Mammootty now undergoing treatment and Mohanlal has already announced that he is done with anymore posts, the race has begun. By now factions have also emerged with one section led by State Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar, who is already controlling the body of Television and Serial actors, he is keen to be a kingmaker in the film actors association too. Another faction who are keen to make it to the helm includes actor Baburaj who has started to make the vital moves. While there is another group which wants college professor-turned-actor Jagdeesh to take the lead. Yet another section is trying to see if a compromise can be reached to avoid an election, but their plans have reached a dead end when veteran actor Vijayaraghavan backed out, so did popular actor Kunchacko Bobban. Incidentally, the outgoing committee which was elected in 2024 had its term till 2027, but circumstances saw that it had a premature end when Mohanlal expressed his inability to continue. Many AMMA members now lament that with the passing away of comedian Innocent, who was the President for 15 years till 2018, things have not been the same as he had the knack of running AMMA through his deft handling without hurting the ego of any through his jokes.
