Framework takes aim at 'janky, locked-down, disposable, underpowered, and frankly, boring' entry-level laptops with its new 12-inch touchscreen
What's in an inch? We've already got the great Framework 13 laptop, so why does the company believe the world needs a Framework 12 laptop as well? Well, it's not just a smaller version of its current machine, this is a new touchscreen convertible notebook, but one that's been specifically created to be an entry level laptop for "students and young people around the world."
Traditionally, affordable, entry-level machines can feel cheap and not always particularly cheerful. And Framework is particularly excoriating about this category of PC.
"We build products to fix what we see as a broken industry," reads the new Framework blogpost, "and few categories are as emblematic of the problems with consumer electronics as entry-level laptops.
"They tend to be janky, locked-down, disposable, underpowered, and frankly, boring machines. Shamefully, these are the products that PC brands market for use by students and young people around the world. Instead, we believe these are the people who most need thoughtfully designed, long-lasting computers."
The idea then is to bring Framework's design ethos into a smaller, cheaper, "more flexible" shape, and one that also comes in a range of colors, too. I will say, I'm into the pastel tones of these new little laptops; the bubblegum one is my jam. It's not just a pretty facade, either, with the two-tone look the result of an over-moulding process which improves the durability of the device using "shock-absorbing TPU over rigid PC/ABS with an inner metal structure for robustness."

It's also claimed to be the company's "easiest product ever to repair" but right now we don't exactly know what that means.
So far, we only have this small preview about the new touchscreen machines, so there's no images detailing what's inside them, but presumably Framework will be re-using the same mainboard design to keep costs down. It has said it will be fitting 13th Gen Core i3 and Core i5 chips into these machines, which ought to make them pretty powerful devices despite being a few generations old.
Along with that there will be support for up to 48 GB of DDR5-5200 and 2 TB SSDs, with a 12-inch 1920 x 1200 touchscreen display with an impressive 400 nits peak luminance. And you can have your choice of Windows 11 or Linux, too.
Pre-orders for the Framework 12 open in April, and we'll likely get a better idea of what's inside the machines as we get closer to that date, with deliveries expected to be in the summer of 2025.

Cyber Agency—50% Of Microsoft Windows PCs ‘Vulnerable To Attack'
Government agency issues upgrade now warning. Microsoft's sudden u-turn on killing Windows 10 in October has a serious downside. There are still around 50% of all users on this ending/not ending version of the OS, many of whom will now wait at least 12 months before upgrading their PCs. Perhaps 250 million of the 700 million affected users do not have hardware that meets the Windows 11 hurdles. There's certainly a case to be made for giving them more time to buy new devices. But for the rest, there's no real excuse for not upgrading now. And while Microsoft has said the same, human nature suggests many simply won't. That warning has now been echoed by NCSC, the U.K. spy agency's cyber security outfit. 'Devices that don't meet Windows 11 hardware requirements,' it has just warned in a new public advisory, 'remain fundamentally vulnerable to attack.' NCSC acknowledged the problem — for many users 'Windows 10 works for them, and just doesn't feel old. Thanks to its modern UI, users forget that it was released over a decade ago.' But it's creaking under the covers, and on the security front that matters. Windows 11 Vs Windows 10 (to end June 2025) While Windows 10 was still installed on more PCs globally than Windows 11 at the end of last month, the latest data suggests that has changed in July with Windows 11 creeping ahead. But that has not yet taken Microsoft's u-turn into account. The cyber agency says 'the security risks of not upgrading are significant,' and those remaining on Windows 10 risk becoming 'a prime target for cyber criminals.' To back this up, NCSC cites WannaCry ransomware which was rife on outdated Windows machines, 'an attack which resulted in huge costs and damage globally.' While it's assumed most Windows 10 users can upgrade but are deciding not to — at least not yet, for those delaying because of the hardware costs involved, NCSC says 'Windows 11 provides excellent justification for purchase of new hardware.' But that case has been made by Microsoft for years and has thus far failed to land. You can expect these warnings to continue to target users as October's now tepid deadline approaches and then passes. The reality is that the biggest threat to Windows security is currently inertia, and nothing thus far has managed to fix that.

Considering Forza Horizon 5 came out in 2021, it's impressive that Xbox was able to squeeze another 2 million sales out of it with a PS5 release. Additionally, Xbox benefits from the quick revenue boost from these sales, as compared to the long-running but lower revenue it generates from its Xbox Game Pass subscription service. This also cements the viability of Xbox's current business model. Rather than focus on the release of exclusive games on its consoles, the company has focused on offering its games across multiple consoles, even those of its direct rivals. Doing so generates game sales from consumers who were unlikely to purchase an Xbox console but were still interested in the company's games. What This Means for Xbox While Xbox hasn't performed the best this console generation, lagging behind Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's (NTDOF) Switch and Switch 2, there's still a space for it in the current video game market. Its desire to bring Xbox games to all platforms has benefited it through this period, as has its various purchases of large studios, such as Activision Blizzard and Bethesda. If Xbox can build loyalty to its IPs across rival consoles, it could set the company up to return to an exclusive strategy. This would incentivize consumers to purchase its consoles to play their favorite titles. Is Microsoft Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Turning to Wall Street, the analysts' consensus rating for Microsoft is Strong Buy, based on 31 Buy and three Hold ratings over the past three months. With that comes an average MSFT stock price target of $533.70, representing a potential 6.11% upside for the shares.
