Fortunately, the Senators won't have to endure a banner raising before the puck is dropped at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers will open the season four days earlier against Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks at 5 p.m. as part of an ESPN tripleheader on Oct. 7.

The club had 13 sellouts in the 18,652-seat arena last season.

'It's just weird': Oilers GM defends star Edmonton d-man on new mega contract

Article content 2. As Bowman points out, the main thing Oilers fans and pundits complain about when it comes to Bouchard is his turnover. Bowman suggest we should all way that against the good things that Bouchard does during a game, such as launch blistering shots on net, making great stretch passes to launch dangerous attacks, and defend well positionally. Article content That makes sense for me. Article content 3. One way to look at Bouchard's puck management is to look at the number of stretch passes he makes that lead to Grade A shots, then compare that to the number of turnovers he makes that lead to Grade A shots against. Stretch passes are a wicked attacking weapon in hockey. They're not easy to execute. Article content What we see is that the last two years in the playoffs, Bouchard has been Edmonton's best d-man at ripping stretch passes. In 2025 he made 1.75 stretch passes for a Grade A shot for every turnover he made leading to a Grade A shot against at even strength. The team average was 0.81 stretch passes for every turnover, so he was more than twice as good as the average Oilers d-man. Article content Article content Bouchard was also strong in this same category in the 2023-24 regular season, with 40 stretch passes leading to Grade A shots and just 33 turnovers leading to Grade A shots against. Article content But this past regular season was a different story. Bouchard made 23 stretch passes but 35 turnovers. Little wonder that some folks noticed this negative ratio of 0.69 stretch passes for every turnover and felt he wasn't play that well. At times he wasn't. Article content Article content 3. Another way to rate and rank d-men is to look at their total contributions to Grade A shots (shots, passes, hard charges at the net and battles won) compared to their total mistakes on Grade A shots against at even strength (lost battles, turnovers, bad pinches, missed assignments, bad line changes, bad deflections). Article content 4. In this category, Bouchard has been the Oiler's best d-man for the past two years. He was dominant in particular in 2023-24. He slipped a bit last year, but was still the team's best d-man, just ahead of Jake Walman, Darnell Nurse and Mattias Ekholm. In the playoffs, Bouchard again shot up and was by far the Oil's best d-man the past two seasons. Article content Article content 5. When you take in all these factors, I'll suggest that Bowman has a point, that is a bit weird that there's so much criticism of Bouchard, especially when we consider his superlative play in the playoffs, where he's been an absolute stone-cold killer on the attack and solid on defence for two years running. Article content Bouchard comes through for the Oilers when they need him most, and when so many other players on the Oilers fail to rise to the occasion. Article content He's the kind of player who can drive a team to Stanley Cup wins and to Olympic gold medals. Article content Article content

Charles Barkley reiterates his love for ‘the best city in the world' Toronto

NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has once again reiterated that Toronto is his favourite city, this time on a podcast. Appearing on the 'Pardon My Take' podcast on July 28, Barkley shouted out both the city and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Barkley and the two hosts were discussing TNT commentator Paul Bissonnette—who Barkley worked with during his time at the broadcaster—and Bissonnette's loud and proud love for the Leafs. 'Man, I'm rooting for them (the Leafs),' Barkley said. 'Yeah, they got to win soon. I know they let (Mitch) Marner just go, but man, I root for that because that's my favourite city in the world.' 'Toronto is the best city in the world. Easily,' he continued. 'Chicago summers are the second best. Those are my two favorite places in the world.' It's not the first time Barkley has expressed his love for Toronto, having previously done so during the Toronto Raptors' NBA championship run, calling the city 'one of the best kept secrets in the world.' It's also not the first time Barkley has publicly supported the Maple Leafs. Earlier this year, he predicted them to go all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, though he picked fellow Canadians the Edmonton Oilers to beat them.

Longtime offensive tackle Taylor Moton emotional about potential final season with Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Taylor Moton has been a mainstay at offensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers since coming into the league as a second-round draft pick in 2017. So it's understandable that Moton got emotional following Wednesday's training camp practice talking about the possibility of this being his last season in Carolina. The 30-year-old Moton is entering his final year of his contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March. As of yet, Moton has not received an extension. 'I try not to think about it,' Moton said. 'I have had some of my best years of my life in Carolina. The city, and being a Panther means a lot to me. I obviously want the years to continue. But if it's my last year here, I want it to be my best year, the offensive unit's best year and the team's best year. I will do whatever I can for it to be the best yet. I'm a little emotional about that.' Moton has started 113 games for the Panthers (13th most in franchise history). He's played in 129. Although he's never been selected to the Pro Bowl, Moton has been remarkably consistent, durable and productive. His streak of 104 straight starts came to an end last season in Week 5 when he missed three games with an elbow injury. He recovered to finish the season, and enters year nine 'feeling like a rookie' when it comes to his health. Panthers executive vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis and general manager Dan Morgan have some tough decisions to make at offensive tackle. Along with Moton's impending free agency, the Panthers need to decide whether to work out a contract extension with the team's other offensive tackle Ickey Ekwonu, a 2022 first-round draft pick and fan favorite as a Charlotte native. The Panthers picked up the fifth-year option on Ekwonu, but a new contract could mean limiting a potential $17.5 million salary cap hit in 2026. For now, Moton seems to be the more pressing issue. 'I did see Taylor get a little emotional up here,' Tilis said as he stood behind a podium after practice Wednesday. 'That's the hard part of our business that somebody pours their whole life into this like Taylor has and he's faced with potentially going to a new place next year. But at the same time we are going to make the best decision for the organization. If that means keeping Taylor here, then that's great. If those two things align, we are open to' re-signing him. At this point, Tilis isn't feeling any pressure to extend anyone. He prefers to keep contract talks to the offseason, but the Panthers aren't against to negotiating a deal during the season. The Panthers rewarded running back Chuba Hubbard with a four-year, $33.2 million deal last November. 'Whatever makes the best sense for the Panthers, we'll do,' Tilis said. The Panthers still have plenty of time to make a long-term decision on quarterback Bryce Young, who overcame an early season benching in 2024 by showing promise down the stretch with 10 combined touchdowns throwing and rushing and no interceptions in his final three games. He's under contract through 2026, and the Panthers hold a team option for 2027. Tilis, who previously worked as the lead contract negotiator in Kansas City, was responsible for getting a 10-year, $450 million extension for Patrick Mahomes in 2020 just months after the QB led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win in just his second season as a full-time starter. Young, who was 4-8 as a starter last year, still has plenty to prove. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'We had something good going' in Kansas City, Tilis said. 'With Bryce, it's just like the (Ekwonu) conversation. Bryce is an ascending player, so I don't want to sit here and make any kind of promises, any kind of statements about what we're thinking about for Bryce's contract or anything like that.' Tilis said for now it's best that Young focuses on football. 'He needs to focus on being the best version of himself, and the contract itself will get figured out,' Tilis said. ___ AP NFL:
