IPL tickets sold at higher prices; police bust black-market racket

Time of India28-04-2025
Jaipur: The city police's crime branch launched a probe into a suspected nexus that allowed black marketers to amass large numbers of IPL tickets and sell them at exorbitant prices ahead of matches at the Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Stadium.
DCP (Crime) Kundan Kanwaria said that three persons— Rajesh Vishnoi, Sandeep Natani, and Chandra Prakash — were arrested in two separate cases over the past week. Police recovered a large haul of match tickets from their possession, along with a four-wheeler used in the operation.
Kanwaria said that the accused were found with 40 tickets priced at Rs 2,400 each, 16 tickets priced at Rs 3,200 each, and 40 tickets priced at Rs 2,200 each. The Rs 2,200 tickets were being resold at prices ranging from Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000, while premium-category tickets were sold for as high as Rs 10,000, he said.
"There is a purchase limit per person for online ticket booking. Yet, the accused managed to secure countless tickets of different categories. We are investigating how they obtained them," Kanwaria said.

Police suspect that the racket involved insiders who facilitated bulk ticket procurement. "This is a violation of standard purchase norms. Further arrests and disclosures are expected as the investigation progresses," he said.
The police also said that the accused would sell the tickets only a day or hours before the tournament. "There was a match Monday, so the accused would begin selling off these tickets for exorbitant prices Monday morning, cashing in on the desperation," Kanwaria said, adding that there could be even more suspects involved in the racket who are also under the scanner.
"We suspect that the gang operated under different stages, someone gave tickets to these accused who then sold them in the black market," he said.

SAD to intensify agitation against land pooling policy, hold protests across Punjab

Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday declared it will intensify agitation against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab govt's 'Land Pooling Policy'. The party announced plans to hold at least four major protests, one each in Bathinda, Patiala, Ferozepur, and Moga in August. The decision was made after a core committee meeting of the party on Tuesday. Following the meeting, senior SAD leader and party spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema stated that the party would protest against the "land grabbing scheme" in Bathinda on Aug 4, in Patiala on Aug 11, in Ferozepur on Aug 21, and in Moga on Aug 30. He mentioned that "the outline of the state-wide opposition to the govt's land loot was discussed at meetings of the party district presidents as well as the working committee earlier in the day, which were presided over by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal." Earlier in the morning, Badal launched the party's state-wide campaign, "Proud to be Akali" (Mainu Maan Akali Hon Te), by releasing and pasting stickers on the workers' vehicles and also releasing flags to be hoisted on the homes of all workers and supporters of the party. "Members in all three meetings strongly condemned the wave of vendetta and repression let loose against the workers and leaders of the Opposition parties, especially the SAD," Cheema said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Cheema also condemned the shocking incident of a Sikh girl student, Gurpreet Kaur, being stopped from appearing in the Rajasthan Judicial Services exam in Jaipur. He said the meeting outlined an elaborate programme in connection with sacred religious and historical events, including the anniversary of the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur and the historic Rakhar Punia conference at Baba Bakala Sahib on Aug 9. Cheema stated that the Punjab govt, especially the chief minister, owed an apology to the Khalsa Panth for "turning the solemn anniversary of the Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib into an entertainment programme at Srinagar." The Akali leader added, "It is strange that the CM has not even deemed it necessary to express regrets and apologies for the event organised by his govt." Responding to a question about the five-member committee calling a meeting of general house delegates to elect the president of a new faction of the party on August 11, for what it calls the revival of the Shiromani Akali Dal on the directions of Akal Takht, SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema said, "Anyone is free to make a new party. Everyone has the right to interpret things in their own way." However, Cheema pointed out that "the then Akal Takht Jathedar termed the decision, exercise, and assigning of duties by (SAD) working committee (to carry out membership drive as per party Constitution) as correct." Cheema emphasised, "The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) election took place on April 12, in which the party president was elected. The party organisation has also been largely announced. The record has been submitted to the Election Commission as per the party Constitution. District chiefs have been appointed, and the process to complete the organisational structure at the circle and booth level is in its final stages. " Questioning the legality of the five-member committee carrying out the exercise claiming it will usher in a revived SAD, Cheema said, "Is it legally possible? Tomorrow any four people can come together (and say they are forming SAD)." He added, "This is not a joke. As per the party Constitution, even if a booth level agent is to be appointed, it will have my signature and that of the constituency representatives authorised by me. There are rules, there is a party symbol (allotted by the Election Commission)." MSID: 122978625 413 |

HC lifts stay on civil prison order against builder, initiates contempt proceedings

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court has lifted the stay on an order by the Gujarat Real Estate Regulatory Authority (GujRERA) to detain office bearers of Pacifica Developers Pvt Ltd, including its managing director Rakesh Israni, in a 60-day civil prison. The developers were penalised for failing to hand over possession of a house to a customer and allegedly selling the same property to a third party. In addition to clearing the way for execution of the civil prison order, Justice Vaibhavi Nanavati last week referred the case to a division bench for the initiation of contempt of court proceedings against Israni, the company, and other office bearers—Darpan Tarwani, Kaushik Patel, and Jay Chandani—for making false statements before the court. "The conduct of the original petitioners in SCA No. 20527 of 2022 is contemptuous and requires action. This court deems it fit to refer the original petitioners to the bench handling contempt matters," the order reads. The court accepted the proposal and stayed the GujRERA order of civil detention. Later, Sharma's advocate, Vishal Dave, informed the court that the developers had approached the high court again and sought to withdraw their petition, stating they would instead file an appeal before the RERA appellate tribunal. The court allowed this and continued the stay on the civil detention order. However, in 2024, Sharma approached the court again, stating that the developers had never filed an appeal before the appellate tribunal and had continued to enjoy the stay order wrongfully. Justice Nanavati observed, "The aforesaid in the opinion of this court, is nothing but abuse of process of law and the said act is contemptuous in nature and in the opinion of this court, the original petitioners (builders) are jointly and severally liable for the same." While referring the matter to a division bench for contempt proceedings, the high court also ordered the release of the Rs 24 lakh deposit to Sharma.
