Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has been awarded the Level 1 Accessibility Accreditation by Airports Council International (ACI) World. The ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Programme is a global initiative aimed at helping airports evaluate and improve their accessibility standards. The Level 1 certification, regarded as the foundational stage, focuses on identifying barriers, assessing current facilities and services, and initiating the implementation of internationally accepted best practices for accessibility. According to a press release, RGIA was assessed across several key areas, including physical infrastructure such as ramps, accessible restrooms, and clear signage, passenger services like communication aids and dedicated assistance programmes; staff training; and the airport's overall organisational commitment to inclusivity. 'Our goal is to ensure that every traveller, regardless of physical or cognitive ability, feels welcomed, supported and empowered. RGIA was assessed on key parameters, including physical infrastructure (such as ramps, signage, and accessible restrooms), passenger services (including assistance programmes and communication aids), staff training, and the airport's organisational culture and leadership commitment to 'inclusivity", it said. The prestigious recognition marks a major milestone in RGIA's journey towards creating a more inclusive, accessible, and dignified travel experience for all passengers, including those with disabilities and reduced mobility, the release said.
