Prep talk: DeAuna Louis of GALA is athlete to watch in the hurdles
When it comes to going over hurdles, DeAuna Louis of GALA is the best in the City Section. She will try to defend her City titles in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles on Thursday at the City Section track and field championships at Birmingham.
Equally important is her goal to do well at next weekend's state championships at Buchanan High in Clovis.

She has become one of the most successful athletes in the history of the Girls Academic Leadership Academy, which is the first and only all-girls STEM school in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Running events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. weather permitting (there's a heat wave coming this week) ...
The City Section will hold an Open Division baseball semifinal doubleheader on Tuesday at Cal State Northridge, with El Camino Real playing Birmingham at 3 p.m., followed by Venice taking on Sylmar at 6 p.m. The winners advance to Saturday's 1 p.m. final at Dodger Stadium.

However, the ship seems to have turned and the course is now being led by newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana, who has spearheaded City's transfer business this summer since taking over from Txiki Begiristain. City have secured the arrival(s) of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli and Rayan Cherki in June, laying down an early marker to signify their intent to challenge for all trophies next term as they plan for life beyond Kevin De Bruyne. De Bruyne was not given a new contract as he approached the closing months of his most recent deal at the Etihad Stadium, with the 34-year-old joining Napoli on a free transfer after agreeing a two-year deal with the recently-crowned Serie A champions. Advertisement Guardiola has been given a new lease of life with a quartet of new signings as well as a major shuffle in his coaching staff, with Pepijn Lijnders and James French joining in as assistant and set-piece coaches following the departures of Juanma Lillo, Carlos Vicens and Inigo Dominguez. Manchester City have enjoyed a perfect run in the Club World Cup so far and have progressed to the Round of 16 after topping their group, where they will face Al-Hilal as they seek to go all the way and secure a much-needed piece of silverware to kick off the 2025-26 campaign. Haaland was in amongst the goals against Juventus as the Norway international latched onto a Matheus Nunes cross and tapped the ball into an empty net to grab the 300th goal of his career – a remarkable feat for a 24-year-old forward playing in the best league in world football. Launching praise on his talisman after the midweek rout of Juventus, Guardiola said: 'All I can say is congratulations, scoring 300 goals at 24 years old, this is quite good right? Manchester City thrash Juventus 5-2 in Group G finale
Jeremy Doku put on a brilliant display with plenty of support and some help from the opposition as Manchester City defeated Juventus 5-2 in the deciding match in the Club World Cup's Group G on Thursday in Orlando. 'We played well. I'm happy with the victory,' Doku said. 'Now we're just curious to see who we're going to play against.' Manchester City later learned its Round of 16 foe will be Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal, with the match on Monday in Orlando. Defender Pierre Kalulu's gaffe on a cross from Savinho went past his own keeper and nudged City into the lead, 2-1, at the 26th minute. In the 52nd minute, striker Erling Haaland scored while shuffling his feet with a touch that bounded into an open net on a dish from Matheus Nunes. It was the 300th career goal combined for team and country for the 24-year-old Norwegian in only his seventh minute in Thursday's match. Phil Foden entered off the Manchester City bench in the 66th minute and tapped in his team's fourth goal of the match three minutes later. Haaland's 75th-minute header failed, only for Savinho to power a rebound off the crossbar and into goal to make it 5-1. Juventus trimmed the deficit on an 84th-minute breakaway from Dusan Vlahovic, who scored for the second consecutive match. With the teams effectively tied entering the match with two wins apiece, Man City leapt Juventus to the top of the table in a decisive victory that also bumped them to the top of the tournament with 13 goals. City (3-0-0, 9 points) became the only club to win all three matches in the group stage. As the Group G winner, City will stay in Orlando to oppose Al Hilal, who beat Pachuca 2-0 later Thursday to finish second in Group H. Juventus (2-1-0, 6 points) are headed to Miami Gardens, Fla., as the runner-up in Group G. Their next matchup is Tuesday against Group H winner Real Madrid, who routed RB Salzburg on Thursday. Man City went ahead 2-1 and held the margin at halftime, scoring first at the nine-minute mark when Doku hit the brakes in front of the net and found the top right corner. Liverpool can FINALLY sign their new Mo Salah
Nunez struggles to live up to price tag Nunez looks destined to leave this summer having failed to live up to his billing as the most expensive signing in the club's history - prior to the Wirtz deal. The 26-year-old will depart with just 40 goals to his name in 143 games and only netted five in the league last term. Advertisement He was the landmark Liverpool arrival in the 2022 summer window - signed for a fee of up to £85m from Benfica - but hasn't matched the output of the other two Premier League superstar strikers signed during that time. Erling Haaland for example has scored 123 goals in the same timeframe for Manchester City. Alexander Isak, meanwhile, has scored 62 in just 109 outings for Newcastle. While Haaland might have always looked destined for City, Liverpool did in fact have the option of adding Isak back in 2022. Klopp preferred Nunez over Isak That's according to Ian Graham, the Reds' former director of research. Having previously convinced Jurgen Klopp to sign Mohamed Salah instead of Julian Brandt, Graham's team can be said to have had a transformative effect on the club's fortunes. Advertisement But Graham lost the battle to Klopp in 2022 over Isak. The German manager was enamoured with Nunez and pushed to sign the Uruguayan instead. 'Jürgen created a lot of success for the club, so it's understandable why it moved in that direction,' Graham told the Financial Times. 'I'm happy to talk about my colleagues persuading Jürgen [in 2017] that Mo Salah was the player to buy instead of Julian Brandt. 'In 2022, he signed Darwin Núñez [for £70mn plus add-ons] instead of Alexander Isak. 'Both players, if you look at top young centre-forwards in Europe, they would be number one and two — or two and three but [Erling] Haaland was going to [Manchester] City and out of our price range. And while Nunez's stock has plummeted - with Liverpool seeking to offload him in a cut-price deal - Isak has gone from strength to strength. The Sweden international is the hottest property in this summer's transfer market and could be leaving Newcastle for a fee of over £100m. That's not a bad return for Newcastle on the £63m they paid Real Sociedad. © IMAGO Isak to Liverpool could change everything Liverpool have already put the groundwork in on this deal - according to Graham - and now have the chance to rectify Klopp's major transfer error. They will have to pay a lot more money - and a lot more in wages - than they would have done in 2022. Advertisement But now they know they'll be signing a proven Premier League striker who is now in the world-class bracket. It's no exaggeration to say this one transfer fix could change everything. Isak was supposed to be the next Firmino; the next Salah. The recruitment team did their work and hand-delivered Klopp the ideal frontman on a plate. He turned elsewhere however and the Reds suffered. Now is the time to right that wrong. Nunez out, Isak in is the transfer that MUST happen this summer.
