IBM Study: CEOs Double Down on AI While Navigating Enterprise Hurdles

CEO respondents say they expect the growth rate of AI investments will more than double over the next two years
50% of surveyed CEOs report that rapid investment has resulted in disconnected technology within their organization
ARMONK, N.Y., May 6, 2025 /CNW/ -- A new global study by the IBM (NYSE: IBM) Institute for Business Value found that surveyed CEOs are committed to advancing AI solutions across their organization even as they face challenges from accelerating technology adoption.
The IBM CEO study,* which surveyed 2,000 CEOs globally, revealed that executive respondents expect the growth rate of AI investments to more than double in the next two years, and 61% confirm they are actively adopting AI agents today and preparing to implement them at scale.
According to the findings, 68% of surveyed CEOs identify integrated enterprise-wide data architecture as critical for cross-functional collaboration, and 72% view their organization's proprietary data as key to unlocking the value of generative AI. However, the research indicates organizations may be struggling to cultivate an effective data environment: half (50%) of respondents acknowledge that the pace of recent investments has left their organization with disconnected, piecemeal technology.
In the foreword of the study, IBM Vice Chairman Gary Cohn writes, "As AI adoption accelerates creating greater efficiency, and productivity gains, the ultimate pay-off will only come to CEOs with the courage to embrace risk as opportunity. Meaning, focusing on what you can control, especially when there is so much you can't. When the business environment is uncertain, using AI and your enterprise data to identify where you have leverage is a competitive advantage. At this point, leaders who aren't leveraging AI and their own data to move forward are making a conscious business decision not to compete."
"CEOs are balancing the pressures of short-term ROI and investing in long-term innovation when it comes to adopting AI," said Mohamad Ali, Senior Vice President and Head of IBM Consulting. "But we know that organizations that keep innovating, especially during periods of uncertainty, will emerge stronger and be better positioned to capitalize on new opportunities."
Other key findings include:
Surveyed CEOs report that only 25% of AI initiatives have delivered expected ROI over the last few years, and only 16% have scaled enterprise wide.
To accelerate progress, two-thirds (65%) of CEO respondents say their organization is leaning into AI use cases based on ROI, with 68% reporting that their organization has clear metrics to measure innovation ROI effectively.
Just over half (52%) of CEO respondents say their organization is realizing value from generative AI investments beyond cost reduction.
64% of CEOs surveyed acknowledge that the risk of falling behind drives investment in some technologies before they have a clear understanding of the value they bring to the organization, but only 37% say it's better to be "fast and wrong" than "right and slow" when it comes to technology adoption.
59% of surveyed CEOs admit their organization struggles to balance funding for existing operations and investment in innovation when unexpected change occurs, as 67% say more budget flexibility is needed to capitalize on digital opportunities that drive long-term growth and innovation.
By 2027, 85% of surveyed CEOs expect their investments in scaled AI efficiency and cost savings to have returned a positive ROI, while 77% expect to see a positive return from their investments in scaled AI growth and expansion.
CEOs see strategic leadership and specialized talent as essential to unlocking AI value, amid expertise and skills gaps
69% of CEO respondents say their organization's success is directly tied to maintaining a broad group of leaders with a deep understanding of strategy and the authority to make critical decisions.
67% of CEOs surveyed say that differentiation depends on having the right expertise in the right positions with the right incentives.
CEOs cite lack of collaboration across organizational silos, aversion to risk and disruption, and lack of expertise and knowledge as top barriers to innovation in their organization.
Surveyed CEOs say roughly one-third (31%) of the workforce will require retraining and/or reskilling over the next three years, while 65% say their organization will use automation to address skill gaps.
54% of CEO respondents say they are hiring for roles related to AI that did not exist a year ago.

@ the Bell: Markets steady amid tariff tensions and mixed bank earnings

Canada's main stock index ended the day largely unchanged on Wednesday, as investor concerns about inflation driven by tariffs dampened market sentiment ahead of upcoming US producer price data. Trade tensions remained a key focus after US President Donald Trump imposed a 19 per cent tariff on Indonesian imports as part of a new agreement—one of several deals being finalized before a broader tariff increase set for August 1. Meanwhile, US markets showed an upbeat performance as major banks continued to report earnings for a second consecutive day. Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) posted stronger-than-expected Q2 profits, although its net interest income fell short of analyst forecasts. Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) shares rose after the bank exceeded expectations for the quarter, driven by robust performance in equities trading. The Canadian dollar traded for 73.05 cents US compared to 72.87 cents US on Tuesday. US crude futures traded $0.17 lower at US$66.35 a barrel, and the Brent contract lost $0.21 to US$68.50 a barrel. The price of gold was up US$21.50 to US$3,351.95. Determined to Work Together for Jasper: Parks Canada and Partners Bolster Safe and Swift Return Home Français

New financial support will enable remediation efforts and help Jasper residents return home safely and swiftly. JASPER, AB, July 16, 2025 /CNW/ - One year after the Jasper Wildfire forced residents from their homes, Parks Canada, the Municipality of Jasper, the Canadian Red Cross, and Prairies Economic Development Canada continue to work as partners in the recovery and rebuild of Jasper, with a shared focus on quickly returning residents to safe and permanent homes. Today, Parks Canada and the Canadian Red Cross jointly announced up to $5 million in additional support for Jasper residents. This will be intended for Jasperites who require contaminated soil testing and removal prior to rebuilding permanent housing. This new funding will ensure a swift, safe and dignified path forward for those most impacted. New financial assistance, administered by the Canadian Red Cross, will provide support to residents for uninsured costs related to soil remediation and testing that will ensure the long-term health of residents. The Government of Canada, through Parks Canada and other federal partners, has invested more than $180 million in rebuilding Jasper, and the work continues. Together, we have: expedited reconstruction efforts through streamlined processes to make rebuilding as efficient as possible; secured interim housing for 300 Jasper families to allow them to return to the community as soon as possible; coordinated debris removal on 100 per cent of affected lots; and welcomed a number of residents back to permanent housing. With debris removal complete and development permits issued through a streamlined process, the focus has now shifted to soil remediation and ensuring the future health of residents. Parks Canada is continuing to work closely with homeowners to provide clear and timely information, practical solutions, and flexibility throughout this phase. A coordinated plan to guide expedited soil remediation efforts and support residents will be shared very soon. We remain focussed on quickly getting building permits for residents who lost their homes and businesses so that they can move forward with their lives. Together, these efforts reflect a shared commitment to helping Jasper rebuild stronger and faster, with the well-being of residents at the heart of every decision. Quotes "The residents of Jasper have shown remarkable strength during this difficult time. Their resilience and solidarity remind us that, together, we're not just rebuilding homes, but restoring hope. We are here to support them every step of the way to rebuild the town quickly and safely so that Jasperites can move towards building a stronger future." The Honourable Steven Guilbeault Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages " Our new government continues to work with its partners to ensure residents can return to their permanent homes in a safe and timely manner. As Canada's first-ever Minister for Community Resilience, I'm proud to be part of a government that's committed to helping communities like Jasper recover and thrive." The Honourable Eleanor Olszewski Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada. "On behalf of so many of our residents, I extend sincere gratitude to Parks Canada, the Government of Canada, and the Canadian Red Cross for their continued commitment and support. Their thoughtful, coordinated approach to easing the financial and emotional burden of this difficult time has made a meaningful difference in the lives of those rebuilding. This support is helping our community move forward — together." Richard Ireland Mayor of Jasper "The Canadian Red Cross commends Parks Canada for providing financial support that addresses soil remediation which has been an ongoing barrier for rebuilding homes in Jasper. The Canadian Red Cross continues to work alongside community and government partners to support recovery in Jasper and will be there to address ongoing and evolving needs in the weeks and months to come." Conrad Sauvé President and CEO, Canadian Red Cross Quick Facts In September 2024, the Government of Canada introduces legislation (Bill C-76) to enable the transfer of land use planning and development authorities from Parks Canada to the Municipality of Jasper. This has facilitated land use planning and development in the long term. In the short term, Parks Canada and the Municipality of Jasper are working together to streamline and adjust Parks Canada's existing processes. Parks Canada supported all necessary processes for accelerating rebuild of Jasper in concrete ways, such as updated land use policies, expedited approvals for variances, reduced parking requirements, facilitated subdivision processes, simplified development application process, and reduced up front compliance deposit costs. Parks Canada made 4.25 hectares of land available for interim housing and secured over 300 interim housing units for Jasper residents. Initial occupancy started February 26, 2025. Currently, 500 individuals are occupying interim housing in Jasper. The Canadian Red Cross provides interim lodging management services for Jasper residents placed in units as part of the interim housing program. As part of their interim lodging management role, the Canadian Red Cross support tenant relations, managing leases, utility management and coordinating maintenance for sites.
