Trump Media stock tests the limits of bitcoin accumulation: Morning Brief

Strategy (MSTR) makes it look easy. Put larger amounts of bitcoin (BTC-USD) on your balance sheet and watch the numbers get bigger.
The corporate finance maneuver has drawn a loyal following. But while executives are imitating the process, not everyone is replicating the results.
On Monday, Trump Media (DJT) announced it had purchased $2 billion in bitcoin and related securities as part of its bitcoin treasury strategy. The move is the latest example of public companies purchasing bitcoin and, now, ethereum (ETH-USD) to capitalize on rising token prices.

Counting those purchases, President Trump's namesake media group said bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, now comprises two-thirds of its total of $3 billion in liquid assets. But just because companies are trying to emulate Strategy's (né Microstrategy) astronomical success doesn't mean that they will.
As my colleagues David Hollerith and Laura Bratton have reported, dozens of companies have increased their exposure to the digital asset since 2023. Eighty firms have adopted the 'bitcoin standard' by adding bitcoin to their treasury reserves, according to Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani and data tracked by Coinkite.
But it isn't an infallible strategy. While Trump Media shares surged following the purchase announcement, the stock has been struggling. Shares are down more than 40% for the year. GameStop (GME), another imitator of Michael Saylor's bitcoin-holding company, has shed 25% so far this year. The meme stock turned "hodler" is down by roughly the same percentage since disclosing its bitcoin-accumulation program in May.
Trump Media said it acquired the cryptocurrencies as part of a previously disclosed plan to become a bitcoin treasury company. And the purchase comes on the heels of a promising week in Washington for the crypto industry, which has lobbied for more favorable oversight.
The biggest legislative victory yet arrived on Friday when President Trump signed into law a bill that establishes the first federal framework for dollar-backed stablecoins. (Trump and his family have several crypto ventures, including a startup that has launched its own US-dollar-pegged stablecoin (USD1) in partnership with BitGo.)

None of the corporate adherents to the Strategy blueprint has managed to generate the same kind of performance, however. Shares of Strategy have more than doubled over the past year and have climbed roughly 50% year to date. After accounting for the company's latest purchases, Strategy now owns more than 3% of all the bitcoin ever minted.
Wall Street's most popular bitcoin trade does have its critics. They often point to the dumbfounding arithmetic that Strategy is worth more than the value of the bitcoin it holds. Why not simply buy bitcoin, they implore investors.
The answer to the question of why people are willing to pay a premium for Michael Saylor helps explain why Trump Media's stock chart doesn't look like Strategy's. Pivoting to crypto is one way to win. But it may not work for everyone.

Why MARA Holdings Stock Is Plummeting Today

Key Points MARA Holdings' recent $850 million private offering of convertible notes has caused investor concern about potential stock dilution, leading to a decline in its share price. The company's profitability is heavily influenced by the volatile price of Bitcoin and rising energy costs, with the latter expected to remain elevated due to increasing demand from the AI industry. 10 stocks we like better than Mara › Shares of MARA Holdings (NASDAQ: MARA) are falling on Wednesday, down 13.8% as of 2:58 p.m. ET. The drop comes as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite gained 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively. The Bitcoin mining company's stock is falling today after the company announced a private offering of $850 million, sparking fears of dilution. MARA's financial move The company announced it intends to initiate a $850 million private offering with convertible notes due in 2032. Initial purchasers may be granted an option to acquire an extra $150 million in notes. These are unsecured senior obligations and won't be subject to regular interest. The funds will be primarily used to acquire Bitcoin, fund operations, as well as fund capped call transactions, a financial maneuver that will help curb stock dilution. However, some dilution can still occur, and investors were clearly worried today that it would, leading to the sell-off. MARA is highly dependent on Bitcoin MARA's profitability is extremely sensitive to the price of Bitcoin. It's also highly dependent on energy costs. These are both major concerns for investors. To the latter point, I think energy costs are going to be a major concern in the years to come. Energy demands from the artificial intelligence (AI) industry are enormous, growing, and will keep energy prices elevated, impacting MARA's costs to mine Bitcoin. And although there are theoretical advantages to investing in a miner's stock over directly purchasing Bitcoin itself, I think we've seen that there is much more downside in practice. I would avoid the stock. Should you buy stock in Mara right now? UK Treasury chief will slash financial red tape to boost investment

UK Treasury chief Rachel Reeves said on Tuesday that she'll cut red tape for banks and finance firms so that 'informed risk-taking' can help kickstart Britain's sluggish economy. The government is trying to regain the economic initiative after rocky weeks of costly U-turns and figures showing the UK economy contracted for two months running. Arguing that regulation often 'acts as a boot on the neck of businesses', Reeves announced plans to pare back some of the rules introduced after the 2008 global financial crisis, which was triggered by risky lending. That includes reforms to 'ring-fencing' rules enacted to separate banks' retail and investment banking activities, and a review of the amount of capital banks must hold. She said that it was the widest set of reforms of financial services in more than a decade. 'We are fundamentally reforming the regulatory system, freeing up firms to take risks and to drive growth,' Reeves said on a visit to Leeds in northern England. Reeves set out the changes in her annual Mansion House speech to finance bigwigs in London, saying she was 'rolling back regulation that has gone too far in seeking to eliminate risk'. 'I have placed financial services at the heart of the government's growth mission ... with a ripple effect that will drive investment in all sectors of our economy and put pounds in the pockets of working people,' she said. Reeves also praised new Bank of England guidance allowing mortgage lenders to loan more than 4.5 times a buyer's income, saying that would allow tens of thousands of people to buy their first home. Related Who are the new faces in the British Labour government? UK economy contracts again in May despite government growth push She added that 'regulators in other sectors must take up the call I make this evening not to bend to the temptation of excessive caution, but to boldly regulate for growth'. The centre-left Labour Party won a landslide election victory in July 2024, but has struggled to deliver on its pledge to boost economic growth. Efforts to soothe markets and demonstrate fiscal prudence have proved unpopular with voters. A decision to end winter home heating subsidies for millions of retirees, announced soon after the election, was reversed last month. Earlier this month, the government ditched planned cuts to welfare spending after an outcry from Labour lawmakers. The U-turns have reduced the Treasury's future income by several billion pounds, increasing the likelihood of tax increases in autumn. But the government has boxed itself in by ruling out hikes to sales tax or to income tax for employees. Questions swirled about Reeves' future earlier this month when she appeared in tears in the House of Commons during the weekly prime minister's questions session. The Treasury said that Reeves was dealing with a 'personal matter'. The cost of government borrowing spiked at the sight of Reeves' tears, but settled down after Prime Minister Keir Starmer gave her his full backing.
