Attacker wounds Japanese national in China with rock: Tokyo embassy
BEIJING: An "unknown assailant" attacked and wounded a Japanese national accompanied by a child in the Chinese city of Suzhou, Tokyo's embassy said on Friday (Aug 1), calling on Beijing to prevent such incidents. The incident comes a year after a Japanese mother and child were wounded in a knife attack in the same city. A Chinese woman had died trying to stop the assailant. In Thursday's attack, "a Japanese national walking with a child was struck by what appeared to be a rock by an unknown assailant inside a Suzhou, Jiangsu Province subway station", Tokyo's embassy in Beijing told AFP in a statement. A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry told AFP that "the suspect has been apprehended". The victim was "promptly taken to hospital for treatment, and there is no threat to life", the ministry said. China and Japan are key trading partners, but increased friction over territorial rivalries and military spending has frayed ties in recent years. Japan's brutal occupation of parts of China before and during World War II remains a sore point, with Beijing accusing Tokyo of failing to atone for its past. In June last year, a Japanese mother and child were attacked in Suzhou on the anniversary of the 1931 "Mukden incident", known in China as a day of national humiliation. The 1931 explosion of a railway in China was used by Japanese soldiers as a pretext to occupy the city of Mukden, now called Shenyang, and invade the wider region of Manchuria. And in September, a Japanese schoolboy was fatally stabbed in the southern city of Shenzhen. Media reports about the latest attack in Suzhou were censored on the Chinese messaging app WeChat. "The Japanese government has urged the Chinese government to ... severely punish the suspect, prevent similar incidents, and ensure the safety of Japanese nationals", Tokyo's embassy said on Friday.

Novi Pazar says delegation attacked in Poland before Conference League tie
Serbian club Novi Pazar said some members of their delegation were attacked by a group of masked men outside a restaurant the night before Thursday's second leg of their Conference League qualifier at Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok. About 15 men in balaclava masks moved towards the delegation when they were leaving a restaurant in central Bialystok, which caused them to retreat and call the police, Novi Pazar said in an Instagram post on Thursday. The delegation were later attacked by a group of 30 people in masks when they tried to get into a vehicle, the club said in a statement. "We would like to point out that our members were not wearing any club insignia ... Only thanks to the composure of those present and, at that moment, the professional reaction of the police officers, serious incidents were avoided," they added. "The Novi Pazar Football Club expresses its deep concern for the safety of its members and its indignation at the slow reaction of the local police." A police spokesperson said they had intervened during the incident but had no information about anyone being attacked. "The police intervened in response to a request from guests from Serbia, who later returned to the hotel. We currently have no information that anyone was attacked," Tomasz Krupa, a press officer in the provincial police, wrote in an email. "We take every report we receive very seriously. We are currently establishing all the circumstances." Novi Pazar said they would not attend a pre-match joint lunch, planned for Thursday according to UEFA protocol, due to the incident the previous night. UEFA and Jagiellonia were not immediately available for comment. Novi Pazar, who lost the home leg 2-1 last week, have travelled to Poland with a large delegation including players, staff, management, sponsors and friends of the club. "We also hereby ask all supporters and fans of the club who will attend tonight's match individually not to wear club insignia, in order to avoid any kind of incident and maintain the safety of all those present," Novi Pazar added. Polish media reported last week that hundreds of Novi Pazar fans gathered in front of the hotel where the Jagiellonia players were staying before the first-leg clash, chanting and setting off fireworks.

12-year-old girl attacked with hammer at void deck; suspect arrested hours later
MALAYSIA: A 12-year-old girl suffered serious head injuries after she was attacked with a hammer by a man at the void deck of her block in Johor Bahru last Saturday (Jul 26). The incident, which took place around 3:17 p.m., was partially captured on CCTV cameras. A 2-minute and 20-second clip circulating online shows the suspect loitering in the public area on the ground floor of the flat. Several children can be seen walking past him during that time. Moments later, the man moved towards a blind spot in the camera's view. Soon after, the girl's screams rang out, drawing the attention of nearby residents. According to the footage, the man quickly reappeared on camera and fled the scene in haste. The entire incident unfolded in less than a minute. The girl, visibly shaken and bleeding from her head, was seen clutching her injury with her hands. Children who had been nearby rushed over to check on her. She eventually entered the lift, her head covered in blood, and attempted to return home to seek help. Johor Bahru police released a statement on Tuesday (Jul 29), confirming they received a report from the girl's mother at 5:19 p.m. on the day of the attack. The mother said that her daughter had been assaulted by an unknown man with a hammer on the ground floor of their flat. Officers launched an immediate manhunt and managed to arrest a 39-year-old suspect at a residence in Johor Bahru at approximately 7:25 p.m. that same evening, just over four hours after the report was lodged. Police confirmed that the girl was rushed to the hospital, where she is currently in stable condition. In addition to her head injury, she also sustained a sprained and swollen right hand, caused by the struggle. Investigations revealed that the suspect has a history of drug use and multiple prior criminal offenses. A urine test conducted after his arrest came back positive for methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.
