Coach Conor says Cambodian women footballers deserve encouragement after Hong Kong draw
PHNOM PENH: Cambodia women's national team head coach Conor Nestor expressed his satisfaction with the 1–1 draw against Hong Kong.
Following the result, which secured a point in their group opener, Conor emphasised that his players deserve encouragement for their efforts as they head into the next two matches in Group G.
In the AFC Women's Asian Cup Australia 2026 qualifiers (Group G) opener, match held at the National Olympic Stadium on Sunday (June 29), the Cambodian team struggled, particularly in defence. Communication issues between the defenders and the goalkeeper allowed Hong Kong several chances in front of goal.
During one of these plays, Cambodian defender Vibol Serysitha (#13) attempted to clear a shot from Hong Kong forward Leung Hong Kiu Anke but ended up fouling her in the penalty area. The referee awarded a penalty, which Leung (#22) successfully converted in the 31st minute to give Hong Kong a 1–0 lead.
However, the Cambodian team showed resilience and improved significantly in the second half. The stadium erupted with cheers when forward Voeun Sothan scored an equalising goal in the 81st minute, securing a 1–1 result.
'I was really excited to score and help the team equalise. Even though the other team is strong, we played well together today and showed strong determination,' said Sothan.

She also called on Cambodian fans to attend the next two matches in greater numbers to support the team, noting that Sunday's game had a relatively small crowd.
Nestor observed that the Cambodian women played well in the second half and urged the public to give them more encouragement to help boost their morale ahead of their upcoming matches against the Philippines and Saudi Arabia.
'The Hong Kong team has a lot of experience in international competition, so I was pleased to hear the final whistle with a 1–1 result. It was the first time our players have competed at this level,' he told a post-match press conference.
'If our team plays like we did in the second half for the next two games, I believe we can reach a strong position in this group stage of the AFC Women's Asian Cup qualifiers. Our players deserve to be encouraged for their hard work,' added the Irish coach.
Hong Kong head coach Jose Ricardo Rambo expressed disappointment that his team couldn't hold on to their 1–0 lead until the end. He acknowledged that Cambodia's pressure in the second half forced the momentum to shift.
'After scoring in the first half, our level dropped a bit. We started the second half quite well, but Cambodia pressured us hard, which made it difficult to play and maintain possession. We tried to change tactics, but it wasn't enough to regain control,' he said.
Also on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium, the Philippines women's team defeated Saudi Arabia 3–0, taking the top spot in Group G, for now. Cambodia will next face the Philippines on July 2, while Saudi Arabia will play Hong Kong. - The Phnom Penh/ANN

Cycling-Local hero Squiban storms to second straight Tour de France Femmes stage win
FRANCE (Reuters) -France's Maeva Squiban delighted home fans with a solo victory on Stage 7 of the Tour de France Femmes on Friday, her second win in two days, becoming only the fourth rider to claim back-to-back stages at the race. The 23-year-old attacked on the upper slopes of the Col du Granier (8.9km at 5.4%) to reach the finish of the hilly stage alone, which lifted the UAE Team ADQ rider to second in the polka dot jersey standings, level on 17 points with Dutchwoman Silke Smulders. A 17-rider breakaway had lit up the 159.7km stage from Bourg-en-Bresse, with Fiona Mangan (Winspace Orange Seal) becoming the first Irish rider to win an intermediate sprint at the Tour. The move split on the Cote de Saint-Franc before Squiban's decisive attack on the final climb. Mauritian rider Kim Le Court Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal) lost ground on the Granier but finished sixth to retain the yellow jersey. Mountains classification leader Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez) was distanced from the peloton before Squiban's climb. Saturday's mountain stage will be from Chambery to Saint-Francois-Longchamp. Rugby-Lions make two changes for final Australia test
FILE PHOTO: Rugby Union - Six Nations Championship - Scotland v Wales - Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, Scotland, Britain - March 8, 2025 Scotland's Blair Kinghorn in action with Wales' Tomos Williams REUTERS/Russell Cheyne/File Photo SYDNEY (Reuters) -British & Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has made only two changes to his starting team for final test against Australia on Saturday, when the tourists will be looking to seal a 3-0 series sweep. Farrell has resisted the temptation to give fringe players a run despite the series already being decided as the Lions target getting through a test series unbeaten for the first time since 1974. Blair Kinghorn, who missed the first test because of a knee injury, replaces James Lowe on the left wing as he did during last week's second test victory in Melbourne, while James Ryan starts in the second row in place of Ollie Chessum. Chessum drops to the bench, where Ben Earl comes in as back row cover alongside Jac Morgan with Farrell opting for a 6-2 split in favour of the forwards for what is forecast to be a wet weather test at Stadium Australia. The starting back row and halfback pairing remain the same for the third consecutive match, while Irish prop Tadhg Furlong will start his ninth straight Lions test in the front row. "Last weekend's test match in Melbourne was an incredible spectacle and illustrated how special Lions tours are and what they mean to both the players and the supporters," Farrell said in a news release. "We are expecting another epic battle this weekend against a Wallaby side that showed their quality last week." Team: 15–Hugo Keenan, 14–Tommy Freeman, 13–Huw Jones, 12–Bundee Aki, 11–Blair Kinghorn, 10–Finn Russell, 9–Jamison Gibson-Park, 8–Jack Conan, 7–Tom Curry, 6–Tadhg Beirne, 5–James Ryan, 4–Maro Itoje, 3–Tadhg Furlong, 2–Dan Sheehan, 1–Andrew Porter Replacements: 16–Ronan Kelleher, 17–Ellis Genge, 18–Will Stuart, 19–Ollie Chessum, 20–Jac Morgan, 21–Ben Earl, 22–Alex Mitchell, 23–Owen Farrell (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, editing by Peter Rutehrford)

Cycling coach hopes for peace ahead of Thailand Sea Games
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Pro Cycling (MPC) team principal Sayuti Zahit hopes Thailand and Cambodia will resolve their differences amicably before the Thailand Sea Games (Dec 9-20). Thai and Cambodian forces clashed for five days across their border, killing at least 36 people and displacing over 200,000, before both sides agreed to an unconditional ceasefire yesterday (July 27). Sayuti said the Thailand Sea Games mass start road race route could be affected if the conflict reignites as the finish line at the Khao Yai National Park is less than 190 kilometres from the Thailand-Cambodia border. The start for the individual and team time trials in Prachin Buri is roughly 160km from the border. Sayuti had co-coached the Malaysian national road cycling team during the last two editions of the Sea Games in Hanoi (2021) and Phnom Penh (2023). He is expected to reprise the role for the Thailand Sea Games. A total of four MPC riders have been shortlisted for the Thailand Sea Games squad. "We really hope that both Thailand and Cambodia will settle their differences amicably in the spirit of Southeast Asian (Asean) brotherhood," said Sayuti when contacted today (July 29). "This is the first time we (MPC) have encountered such a situation and it is a bit worrying for us because the routes are not really that far from the border. "Ultimately, the safety of our riders and staff remains our absolute priority and we will continue to monitor the situation. "We will follow any directives issued by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) or the government ahead of the Sea Games." Cambodia had hosted the previous edition of the Sea Games in 2023. The Sea Games is a biennial multi-sport competition intended to provide athletes from Asean nations a platform to showcase their skills and boost camaraderie among athletes from Asean countries.
