OSK posts 9pct revenue growth in Q1 2025, supported by diversified segments

KUALA LUMPUR: OSK Holdings Bhd recorded a 9 per cent year-on-year rise in revenue to RM400.6 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (Q1 2025), while pre-tax profit held steady at RM140 million, underpinned by its diversified portfolio.
Group executive chairman Tan Sri Ong Leong Huat said, "Despite the challenging operating environment, our diversified business model has enabled us to sustain earnings and strengthen our fundamentals across key segments."
The financial services segment saw revenue jump 27 per cent to RM67.9 million, with pre-tax profit rising 18 per cent to RM30.9 million, driven by loan portfolio growth in Malaysia and Australia. Outstanding loans rose to RM2.4 billion from RM1.7 billion a year ago.
The investment holdings division posted a pre-tax profit of RM73.7 million, up from RM68.5 million, supported by stronger contributions from RHB Group.
Revenue in the industries segment surged 41 per cent to RM120.8 million, though pre-tax profit slipped to RM5.7 million due to costs tied to newly acquired cable factories in Johor Bahru. Excluding those, segment profit stood at RM12 million. OSK said it is upgrading its Melaka facilities to boost capacity.
The IBS division continues to generate steady revenue amid consistent demand.
The property segment recorded revenue of RM188.5 million and pre-tax profit of RM31.2 million, down from RM204.7 million and RM36.9 million, respectively, in Q1 2024, due to the absence of a high-margin project.
OSK is maintaining momentum in its property development activities, with upcoming launches on track and efforts focused on meeting construction milestones while managing costs.
As of March 31, 2025, the group's unbilled sales stood at RM1.2 billion, with a minimal level of unsold completed stock, reflecting sustained demand.
The group holds a 2,083-acre land landbank with an estimated effective gross development value (GDV) of RM17.7 billion across key regions in Malaysia and Australia.
Meanwhile, the group's property investment division continued to generate stable income from its office and retail portfolios.
The hospitality segment posted RM23.4 million in revenue for Q1 2025 with a pre-tax loss of RM1.5 million, compared to a smaller loss of RM0.7 million last year. The higher loss was attributed to ongoing refurbishments at Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Kuantan, which temporarily impacted revenue from F&B and MICE segments.

He pointed out the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) received a total of 53 applications for the kiosks. 'Among the 28 kiosks, there are nine fruit and vegetable stalls, 14 stalls that sell packed food and drinks, and five drink and fruit juice stalls,' Wee said during a site visit today. The project funded by the federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government allows formerly illegal hawkers and B40 traders from the surrounding area to run businesses in a legal, safe, and clean space. 'So, we must say this is a good initiative that allows the low-income traders to earn a sustainable income by operating in a regulated environment. 'We encourage residents in the surrounding area to support these traders by patronising the MyKiosk stalls here,' Wee said. In response to feedback about blocked parking spaces, he said the kiosks have been repositioned. Traders enjoy six months' free rent, after which they pay a quarterly rental of approximately RM140, he explained. Regarding the two kiosks at Friendship Park, Wee said applications are still being evaluated. 'We must be fair to select them and to select that, you know, the one that should be there rather than having to be there. 'We don't want it to spoil the actual image of Taman Sahabat,' he said. He added MBKS will monitor all hawker centres within its jurisdiction to ensure that subsidised rents translate into genuinely affordable prices for consumers, not just benefits for traders. 'We want you to still be able to find RM3, RM3.50 kolo mee, coffee that you don't have to pay RM4.80 but just RM1 in areas like Kenyalang, Bintawa, and Sungai Apong. 'Subsidies must benefit the rakyat, not operate without purpose,' he said. MARC Ratings: Triple ‘A' with stable outlook for Johor

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd (MARC Ratings) has assigned an unsolicited sub-sovereign credit rating of AAA, with a stable outlook, to Johor. The rating reflects the state's resilient and growing economy, consistent fiscal surpluses, low debt levels, and a stable political landscape supporting its long-term development. MARC Ratings noted that Johor plays a key role in Malaysia's economy, contributing RM148.2 billion or 9.5% to the national gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023. This strength is driven by a robust services sector – making up 54% of its GDP – and the country's largest agricultural sector, accounting for nearly 20% of national output. Johor's proximity to Singapore has generated significant spillovers in retail, hospitality, and investment, reinforcing its economic momentum. The upcoming Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is expected to accelerate high-value growth by attracting advanced industries. In terms of fiscal management, Johor's debt has remained at just 0.1% of GDP from 2021 to 2023 – one of the lowest in the country – thanks to disciplined financial practices and growing tax revenues. The state has recorded consistent fiscal surpluses over the past decade, with the only deficit occurring in 2021 due to pandemic-related revenue declines, MARC Ratings said. These efforts have allowed Johor to build healthy reserves, rising to RM2.4 billion in 2023 from RM1.8 billion in 2013. At the same time, it has maintained a strong focus on development, with 39.4% of total expenditure allocated to development projects between 2019 and 2023. While Johor's revenue structure is solid, MARC Ratings said, it remains reliant on traditional sources like quit rent and land title premiums. To boost fiscal sustainability, the state has introduced new revenue-enhancing measures for 2025. The consolidated funds-to-expenditure ratio, though slightly reduced to 143.3% (2019–2023) from 174.5% (2014–2018), still signals strong liquidity and financial flexibility. MARC Ratings also highlighted Johor's consistent political stability as a key strength. 'The stable outlook reflects our expectation that Johor will continue its disciplined fiscal practices and maintain healthy surpluses in the medium term,' it said. 'Strong revenue from established sources and robust economic activity will support financial stability. Moving forward, additional revenue growth and efficient development spending will be crucial to preserving Johor's strong credit profile.'
