Penang's new ferry service hits five million passengers
This marks a historic milestone, proving that the ferry service remains a key mode of transportation for the people of Penang, as well as tourists wishing to cross from the mainland to the island and vice-versa.
PPSB chief executive officer Datuk V. Sasedharan said the achievement motivated the company to continue improving its services, including considering passenger feedback.
"The ferry is an important mode of transport for Penang, having been in the state for over 100 years.
"PPSB is proud because we have modernised the ferry service (since Aug 7, 2023), and now, this new ferry has successfully carried five million passengers, showing strong acceptance.
"We are pleased with this success and will continue to improve the services, including considering the feedback from passengers from time to time," he said at the 5 Million Passengers Milestone event for the new Penang ferry.
It was officiated by PPSB chairman Datuk Seri Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza in Anjung Tinjau, Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim, here, today.
Sasedharan said 74 per cent of passengers using the new ferry service were pedestrians, and the rest were motorcycle and bicycle riders.
"Besides tourists, most of these passengers are daily commuters from the mainland (Seberang Prai) travelling to work on the island."
Sasedharan said despite the high number of passengers, the ferry service still did not generate profits due to the high operating costs.
"However, we will strive with future plans to collaborate with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to synchronise the ferry schedule with the electric train service (ETS).
"This will allow passengers who disembark at KTM Butterworth and wish to cross to the island to use the ferry service, offering them savings.
"We also provide free ferry services during certain months as a promotional measure to attract more passengers to use the service," he said.

KTMB reaffirms commitment to Johor on ETS expansion
KTMB said it is working with the relevant contractors and authorities to ensure its ETS service from Segamat to Kluang will be ready as soon as possible, with trial runs currently under way. PETALING JAYA : Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) is committed to fully expanding its Electric Train Service (ETS) to Johor as soon as possible. However, the company said it will only be done in phases, after ensuring the safety and reliability of the service to the southern sector, Bernama reported. 'KTMB's primary responsibility is to ensure safety, reliability and readiness before opening any new segment to the public,' it said in a statement today. KTMB said it is working with the relevant contractors and authorities to ensure the next segment of its service, from Segamat to Kluang, will be ready as soon as possible, with trial runs currently under way. The three phases for the ETS extension in Johor are to Segamat, Kluang, and JB Sentral in Johor Bahru. The service currently runs from Padang Besar in Perlis to Segamat. 'The transport minister (Loke Siew Fook) had announced last March, when launching the service to Segamat, that the extension in the southern sector will be done in phases, depending on several critical technical milestones and regulatory approvals,' KTMB said. The company said it wanted to reassure the public of its commitment to delivering a safe, modern and transformative rail service for the southern corridor, following recent reports on the service being extended to Johor Bahru. KTMB said the ETS service to Segamat has been operating successfully since March this year, offering improved travel options and stimulating local economic activity. 'KTMB wishes to thank all passengers, local stakeholders and the public for their patience and continued support. We remain fully committed to making ETS travel to the south a success,' it said.

Anwar: Felda free to determine FGV's direction after delisting
KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) can begin to independently determine FGV Holdings Bhd 's direction once the company completes its delisting process from Bursa Malaysia, which will commence on Aug 28, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister said that this move will enable Felda, together with its cooperative and settlers, to fully focus on the agency's original mission of safeguarding the rights, returns, and interests of the settlers. "We can proceed with the delisting starting Aug 28. This means Felda is no longer bound. Felda is a strength and can decide its own direction and provide assurances to the Federal Land Development Authority Malaysia Cooperative (KPF) so that the benefits and interests of the settlers remain the top priority. "As soon as this matter is settled, I, together with Felda chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and colleagues, will ensure clear guidance from the government -- namely, to make sure FGV returns to Felda's original mission,' he said during the launch of the Mega 3D Carnival (MK3D) 2025 here today. Anwar added that the delisting of FGV is a result of Felda's efficient management, and the focus now must be on ensuring that Felda's projects are implemented smoothly in line with the settlers' needs. Earlier, the media reported that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that Felda now holds 92 per cent of the shares in FGV, paving the way for full ownership and restructuring of the company. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Tuesday, FGV announced that Felda has acquired 91.73 per cent of FGV's total issued shares. FGV's shares are expected to be suspended from trading five market days after the offer for all remaining shares closes on Aug 15. - Bernama
