Malaysian Short Film 'Bleat!' Wins Queer Palm Award At Cannes Film Festival 2025

Hype Malaysia26-05-2025
Earlier in April, the Malaysian-Tamil short film 'Bleat! (கத்து!)' made history as the first Malaysian short film to compete in the Critics' Week section at the Cannes Film Festival. A month later, the project achieved another milestone after it won the Queer Palm Award.
'Bleat!' is a Malaysian-French-Filipino comedic drama short film directed and written by Malaysian filmmaker Ananth Subramaniam. The movie tells the story of an elderly Malaysian-Tamil couple who discovers their male goat is pregnant. As the goat was raised for a ceremonial slaughter, the couple faces the dilemma of proceeding with the ritual or risking divine consequences.
On 24th May 2025, the 2025 Cannes Film Festival closed out and awarded the winning movies of the year. 'Bleat!' won the Queer Palm award under the short film category, making history as the first Malaysian short film to win the award. The Queer Palm is an independently sponsored prize for selected LGBT-relevant films in the Cannes Film Festival. The award recognises films for their treatment of LGBT themes.
Upon winning the award, Director Ananth Subramaniam shared a touching speech with the crowd. He said, ' There are some in the older generation who are so oblivious to change. Even when the change hits them right in the face, they feel the need to ignore it. But tonight, in this space, among you, I feel the opposite. I feel seen. I feel our stories are being heard, our truths acknowledged, and our joys celebrated.'
Ananth's speech continues, 'Bleat! was born out of defiance, but it grew in tenderness. It's a film about the voice that breaks the silence, even when it trembles. About bodies that don't conform but still dance. About queerness not just as identity, but as resistance and reinvention.' Ending his speech, he said, 'To the Queer Palm jury — thank you for holding space for films that don't ask for permission. And to the older generation, may you someday listen, not to correct, but to understand.'
The comments were filled with congratulations from local and international movie buffs. We would also like to congratulate Ananth and the 'Bleat!' team for their historic win. May this be the first award of many to come!

Preparations in full swing for Borneo Flora Festival 2025

Landscaping workers and volunteers actively preparing the program site of the Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) @ Labuan 2025 today. The event will be held on July 26 to 30. – Bernama photo LABUAN (July 18): Preparations for the Borneo Flora Festival 2025 are well underway, with thousands of flowering plants being placed across the island, in stages, to create a vibrant and festive atmosphere ahead of the grand event. A wide variety of vibrant plants is being meticulously arranged at strategic locations, including the main venue at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex, the Financial Park Complex, major roundabouts, public parks, and key gateways, such as Labuan Airport and ferry terminals. Labuan Corporation chief executive officer, Mohd Sukuran Taib, said that the initiative aims to transform Labuan into a 'living garden', reflecting this year's festival theme of celebrating biodiversity, conservation and community creativity. The Borneo Flora Festival 2025, organised by Putrajaya Corporation in collaboration with Labuan Corporation, the Federal Territories Department, and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, will officially kick off on July 26. Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, is scheduled to grace the opening ceremony at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex. This year's festival will feature more than 29 themed gardens, showcasing exotic and endangered flora native to Borneo, alongside contemporary landscape designs presented by local councils, private sector players, and community groups. 'The five-day event will include plant exhibitions, soft and hard landscape gardens, eco-talks, art installations, live performances by Malaysian artists, and family-friendly activities designed to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable living,' Mohd Sukuran said. He added that the polybag planting strategy was adopted not only to enhance aesthetics, but also to allow for flexible, controlled growth and easier relocation, as the final designs take shape. 'Each phase of planting has been meticulously planned to ensure that the flowers are in full bloom when the festival begins. The strategic placement of 250,000 flowering plants across the island is part of our broader effort to infuse Labuan with the vibrant spirit of the festival,' he said. He said that the massive undertaking involves close coordination between municipal landscape teams, horticulturists, and local volunteers. The Borneo Flora Festival is expected to draw thousands of visitors, both domestic and international, including tourists from neighbouring Kalimantan and Brunei, boosted by an aggressive promotional campaign and improved ferry connectivity to Kota Kinabalu and beyond. With hotel rooms, homestays, and serviced apartments still available, organisers are encouraging visitors to plan ahead and experience what promises to be Labuan's most colourful and eco-conscious celebration yet. – Bernama
