Over 20 medals won in competitions
An Alexandra karate club achieved remarkable successes at tournaments over King's Birthday Weekend, with the club winning more than 20 medals.
Counties Shotokan Karate Alexandra Dojo instructor Petri Conradie said he was really proud of the efforts of the martial artists who took part in the tournaments.
"They have been working hard for the past, it's about three months, that we've been working towards going to compete at this tournament and it's great to see that all the hard work is rewarded."
The club took part in two events over the long weekend, the first of which was New Zealand South Island Schools Tournament held on the Saturday. It included competitors from both primary and secondary schools.
The second tournament, held on the Sunday, was the Karate New Zealand Otago Southland Regional Championships, which drew competitors of all ages.
Club members participated in both events.
"In total per day, there was about 130 participants across various divisions," he said.
At the event on Sunday the club got 17 medals, the fifth-most of all the clubs that competed, Conradie said.
The events are a stepping stone for the young martial artists to compete in South Island-wide and national events.
"The kids really get to measure themselves quite well against who else is out there, and then at the nationals, then it's a combination of the South and North Island and kids that almost do it professionally."
For the children to perform at the South Island or national level was really good, he said.

Southland Football going pink
Southland Football is encouraging all players and supporters to think pink and bring the energy this Saturday, as it dedicates a special round to support breast cancer awareness. Each year, Southland Football hosts at least one charity round to support important causes in the community. In the past, charities have included the likes of Hawthorndale Care Village, Koha Kai, the Heart Foundation, and others. This Saturday, it's all about the Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand, and Southland Football is encouraging all players, coaches and supporters to get in behind the cause. Southland Football development officer Leigh Matthews said the intention behind the initiative was simple but powerful: to raise awareness and vital funds for a cause that affects thousands of women and families across Aotearoa and the world. "We want to play our part, not only in supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, but in showing what our football community can do when we rally together," he said. "The inspiration came from my time working with Football South Australia, where each season included a charity round that brought the football community together in a powerful way. I saw firsthand how impactful it was, and I felt it was something special we could bring here to Southland." So far the response from clubs Southland-wide, as well as referees, had been that of real enthusiasm and they were getting set to embrace the special round. "It's also a chance to celebrate women in sport, spotlighting healthy, active role models for our younger generations and helping promote the growth of women's football across the region, Matthews said. "I'm genuinely hopeful that we'll see plenty of pink socks, shirts, beanies and smiles around the grounds this weekend and that this is just the beginning of an annual tradition that gets bigger and more meaningful every year." Pink-themed socks and laces will be for sale on Saturday, alongside a fundraising barbecue, and there is also a raffle and a Givealittle page. Money raised will go towards breast cancer awareness and research. For Football Southland development and operations manager Iain Walker, the cause is particularly close to home, after he lost his wife Fiona to breast cancer earlier this year. "This type of cancer can be the most treatable but sadly often it's not," he said. "I won't be alone in having lost someone near and dear to me. It touches a large number of New Zealanders, as do several other forms of this disease, and therefore we need to keep pushing forward with the endless research that continues to help others. "I'd really encourage everyone to get out enjoy the day, and give what you can afford for a great cause. We have a great football community who support each other in times of need — I know that from experience, and not just my own — so this a great opportunity to keep that momentum going." Hawarden New Zealand-born Nicila Costello Attempts To Become The First Female Three-division Australian Champion
South Island-born Nicila Costello is a proud New Zealander who represents both New Zealand and Australia. She has already accomplished a great deal in her career, being a two-division Australian national champion. Now she attempts to make history to be the first female to win three Australian titles in three different weight divisions. If Costello wins, this would rival New Zealand's Mea Motu, who holds the record for female boxers with the most New Zealand national titles in different weight divisions, with four New Zealand national titles. Costello won her first Australian title in 2022 when she won the Australian Flyweight title against Natalie Hills. She would go on to win the Australian Super Flyweight title in 2024 against Sarah Watt, however, she would lose the title earlier this year against Brianna Harrison in March. Costello won both of her Australian national titles by TKO and KO. Costello comes into this fight very experienced with title fights, with nine out of her eleven fights in her career being title fights. She has won three of those fights, lost five and had one fight by a draw. Her losses, however, were against highly creditable boxers, including two-time division world title challenger Michelle Preston, WIBA world title challenger Brianna Harrison, WIBA World champion Jasmine Parr and world-ranked boxer Mai Soliman. As for her opponent, Hayley Finlayson has an amateur boxing background. She is a 2015 Australian national amateur championship silver medalist. She made her professional boxing debut in 2024. Her last fight was in April this year, where she defeated Ali Jensen. This will be her first title fight as a professional boxer. If Costello wins this fight, her next fight is already in negotiations for later in the year for a New Zealand return. Costello has only fought once in New Zealand in her professional boxing career, which would make her New Zealand return the perfect homecoming. Being New Zealand-born, she is very popular in New Zealand, with her last fight here selling out to come see her. Nicila Costello vs Hayley Finlayson for the Australian National Bantamweight title will happen at Mansfield Tavern, Queensland, Australia, on a Shannon O'Connell undercard. O'Connell is a four-time world title challenger. Unfortunately, this fight won't be televised in New Zealand.
