‘Arcane' cocreator reflects on Season 2 and looks ahead to the future of ‘League of Legends'

Yahoo16-06-2025
Prior to 2021, Riot Games' League of Legends was primarily known as a wildly successful battle arena game. But the characters created for that game became even more popular after Netflix debuted the first season of Arcane, a thrilling animated series that rivaled Pixar in terms of visual flare.
After a three-year hiatus, Arcane returned for its second and final season in November 2024. The series' swan song is now potentially a contender to win its second Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program. Prior to the voting period, Gold Derby caught up with Christian Linke, the cocreator of Arcane and one of the primary driving voices behind it. Linke shared his thoughts on the origin of the show, Season 2's change in direction, and where the franchise may go in the future.

Linke noted that most of the story and lore behind Arcane didn't exist before the show. All of that was built around asking questions about the characters as they appeared in the game.
"What was there to start to work with was the characters, Vi, Jinx, Jayce, Viktor, Caitlyn, Ekko, That was really the heart of what inspired the show, and frankly made us fall in love with wanting to to work on this project because we had been with these characters for at that point, five or six years. We've been playing the game for hundreds or thousands of hours with these characters. And just over time, you start to have questions. 'Who are they when they're not just these game characters? How do they live their lives? What happened to these sisters that became enemies?' These were just all the questions that started to pop up over time.
Jinx — as voiced by Fallout's Ella Purnell — turned out to be one of the show's most popular characters just as she is in the game. That didn't come as s surprise to Linke and his collaborators.
"Jinx, to a large degree, inspired the entire show," said Linke. "I think there's always been something about Jinx that is magnetic. When she's on the screen, it's just fun. Her scenes are fun. She's always been one of the most successful characters from our game. So I think there's just something about that wild character and expression that is the ultimate power fantasy of doing whatever you want and being interesting and original. We've always known that Jinx is our powerhouse."
However, Linke admitted to being shocked by how much viewers liked Jinx's second adoptive father, Silco (Jason Spisak), who was one of the unambiguously villainous characters in Season 1.
"We weren't sure what kind of reaction to expect from Silco," admitted Linke. "He is a manipulative, criminal, ruthless, and at times violent man who does a lot of messed up stuff. I think we were pretty surprised to see how after the first season was out, there were a lot of Silco fans. I think that was a bit of a learning experience for us. It was fascinating to see how there were a lot of people who were willing to forgive a lot of pretty messed up stuff that he was doing as the underground kingpin of Zaun. I think that was perhaps the most interesting reaction we had to process."
Netflix
If the first season of Arcane was built around introducing the game's characters to a wider audience, Season 2 was meant to find new layers for the champions of the rival cities of Zaun and Piltover.
"In many ways, Season 1 was all about getting the characters to that state that they're at in the game," said Linke. "When they're champions of League of Legends. Season 2 was about 'What have we not seen from these characters yet? What have we not seen in the game yet?'
"We flipped a lot of the characters on their heads," continued Linke. "Caitlyn, for example, goes from a hopeful character who wants to work with the underground and really becomes an opponent and a very fierce aggressor after her traumatic experiences at the end of Season 1. And Jinx becomes this unlikely icon/hero of Zaun, which she really didn't expect. I think that was really fun to explore."
Netflix
The two seasons of Arcane were not only filled with emotional story arc, it also had some of the most jaw-dropping animation seen on TV or streaming that rivals Pixar itself. Linke gave full credit for Arcane's unique mixture of 3D and 2D animation to Fortiche, the French animation studio behind the show.
"[Mixing 3D and 2D] was always their trademark look and I think it's because they had a lot of artists coming from comics and being in love with traditional 2D animation, 2D VFX," related Linke. "They just always wanted to find this approach that blends things together. It really was just leaning into that. They have this identity already as artists and it felt like it made 2D work on the big screen. It was a cool blend and I just always loved it. I tried to enable them to lean into that."
Netflix
According to Linke, Arcane was always going to run for only two seasons. But the League of Legends universe lives on. Regarding a potential live-action League of Legends, Linke said "there are explorations." He also said that the team has considered making an Arcane movie.
"[Making an animated movie] has crossed our minds," admitted Linke. "We'll see. Now, we're exploring follow-up projects, and there are a bunch of features among them. Which ones will actually go? It's still a big TBD. In the last few weeks, when you have these screenings going on awards consideration, Arcane really holds up well on the big screen. That was a wonderful experience for us. Definitely everybody is excited to think about what future projects could look like on the big screen."
For the present, Linke noted that Riot wants to keep the team behind Arcane intact as they decide what the next project will be.
"What we're starting with is the people," said Linke. "We've worked together now for 10 years on Arcane. We're very inspired by Pixar, where people started working together on Toy Story, and then after that, people became captains of their own ships, because you learn from each other. That's where we're at. Right now, we want to invest in a few key people that worked on Arcane to explore new stories and see what they're drawn to. We still have to prove that we have strong stories and worthy stories to invest in. We're really investing in the talent that made Arcane.

The Matrix is now streaming for free. Find out how to stream great movies (July 25-27)

Streaming has undoubtedly changed how we watch movies. While nothing can replace the theatrical experience, the pros of streaming ultimately outweigh the cons. That being said, the prices are getting out of control. Offset those costs by downloading FAST services, free apps that offer thousands of movies at no cost to the consumer. If you believe the quality of movies on FAST services is poor, think again. The Matrix, one of the most influential movies of the last 30 years, is streaming for free. The hits don't stop there. Learn how to stream The Matrix and two other films below. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Matrix (1999) Trying to explain the importance of The Matrix in two paragraphs is borderline impossible, so I'll give you the Cliff's Notes. Directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix explores a dystopian future where humanity becomes trapped inside a simulated reality controlled by machines. Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), better known as the hacker Neo, is recruited by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) to join his band of rebels in the fight to free humans from the Matrix. Morpheus believes Neo is 'the One,' humanity's messiah who will destroy the sentient agents trying to keep people from escaping the Matrix. Many of The Matrix's elements — fight choreography, slow motion, wire fu techniques, and philosophical themes — inspired an entire generation of movies. Without The Matrix, most of your favorite action and sci-fi movies in the 21st century would not exist. Stream The Matrix on Pluto TV. The Wedding Singer (1998) If Happy Gilmore 2 becomes a hit, perhaps Netflix would want to explore another sequel to another Adam Sandler '90s movie, The Wedding Singer. Before 1998, Sandler was best known for his juvenile and immature humor. The Wedding Singer displayed Sandler's softer side, proving something that many of us have known for years — the Sandman is one of Hollywood's most versatile actors. The kind-hearted Robbie Hart (Sandler) is left at the altar on his wedding day. To make matters worse, Robbie works as a wedding singer, meaning he's constantly surrounded by love and happiness, two things he has yet to find. The only thing snapping him out of his depression is Julia (Drew Barrymore), a cheerful waitress who asks Robbie to help plan her wedding. As the two bond over wedding plans, Robbie realizes he loves Julia and wants to be the one to marry her. Grow Old With You is a Hall of Fame Sandler song. Stream The Wedding Singer on Tubi. The Worst Person in the World (2021) Do not take the title, The Worst Person in the World, at face value. Renate Reinsve's Julie might believe she's a bad person, but in actuality, she's confused about her life and afraid of the future. It's a normal feeling for anyone in Julie's shoes, an unmarried twentysomething transitioning into her 30s. Divided into 12 chapters, a prologue, and an epilogue, The Worst Person in the World explores Julie's romantic life, including her relationships with a comic artist (Anders Danielsen Lie) and a barista (Herbert Nordrum). The spectacular Reinsve injects passion, charisma, and depth into her character while subverting our expectations in a familiar genre. Reinsve and director Joachim Trier will reunite later this year in the Oscar favorite Sentimental Value. Stream The Worst Person in the World on Tubi.

Kevin Costner's ambitious Western is underrated — watch it now on HBO Max (July 25-27)

Several of Warner Bros.' biggest releases of 2025 are streaming on HBO Max. A Minecraft Movie, the third-highest-grossing movie of 2025, and Sinners, Ryan Coogler's critically acclaimed vampiric horror, are occupying the first two spots in the top 10. Beyond the top 10, there are a plethora of underrated movies worthy of your time. Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is much better than the mixed reviews it received at the time of its release. This weekend, give Horizon and these two underrated movies a shot. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary (2024) Christopher Cross. Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins. Steely Dan. Toto. These five musicians and bands helped pioneer a genre of music that became known as yacht rock. Developed in the late '70s and early '80s, yacht rock is a West Coast sound that infused soulful vocals with easy-listening lyrics. Yacht rock is a combination of soft pop, jazz, R&B, and funk. Yacht rock's popularity exploded in the mid-1980s, but by the end of the decade, it began to lose its stranglehold on pop culture. That's when an unlikely ally — hip hop artists — began sampling yacht rock beats in their songs, which led to a resurgence in the genre. Yacht Rock: A Documentary is an informative exploration into a genre that deserves much more credit for its significant impact on the music industry. Stream Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary on HBO Max. Blue Beetle (2023) Blue Beetle was one of DC's casualties in 2023. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios, clearly wanted the 2023 slate — Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 — to disappear and make way for the new DC Universe. That being said, Blue Beetle displayed the most potential, which is probably why an animated series was greenlit. Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes, a recent college graduate who becomes the Blue Beetle after fusing with the Scarab. The Scarab encases Jamie in an armored exoskeleton with superpowers, including flight, strength, and agility. Despite his initial hesitation, Jamie comes to accept his newfound abilities and embraces his new calling. On its surface, Blue Beetle is a superhero adventure, but the movie works best as a grounded family drama thanks to its terrific cast. Stream Blue Beetle on HBO Max. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) Kevin Costner has become the butt of a lot of jokes for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Costner personally funded $38 million of the $100 million budget shared by the first two films. His ambition may have gotten the better of him, considering Chapter 1 flopped at the box office, and Warner Bros. removed Chapter 2 from its release calendar. All that being said, I'm glad Horizon exists because there are moments in this film — including the Apache raid and Hayes' confrontation with Caleb — that are pure cinematic magic. A Western about life on the American frontier is in Costner's wheelhouse. Mr. Costner, please sell the rights to Netflix to release the next three chapters. Stream Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 on HBO Max.

This heartbreaking drama is an underrated Netflix movie to watch this weekend (July 25-27)

Every time I open Netflix, I feel a mild sensation of both excitement and dread. There's plenty of stuff to check out, but I actually have to pick something in order to get started. This weekend, I've pulled together three movies that are all great whether you've seen them once or hundreds of times. They're also movies that, for one reason or another, are underrated at the moment. Give them a look. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Friday Night Lights (2004) One of the great football movies ever made, Friday Night Lights tells the story of a small Texas town where high school football is the only thing that matters. When the star tailback hurts himself and is out for the season, all hope of the team making it to the state championship seems lost. The team's coach must then push his kids and the town to remember how important it is to believe in themselves. As cheesy as that might sound, Billy Bob Thornton knows how to turn the material into something genuinely revelatory. There's a reason a whole show was based on the story at the center of this film. You can watch Friday Night Lights on Netflix. His Three Daughters (2024) A genuinely heartbreaking movie, His Three Daughters follows three sisters as they navigate the death of the father they all shared. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen all delivered textured performances here, and part of the point of the movie is that their dad meant very different things to each of them. His Three Daughters is a movie about how easy it is to judge the people in your life and how hard it is to navigate difficult periods together without driving one another insane. Crucially, each actor receives plenty of breathing room. You can watch His Three Daughters on Netflix. Instant Family (2018) Family comedy has largely been relegated to Netflix, but Instant Family is a reminder of how great this genre can be. The film stars Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg as a couple who decide to foster children after agreeing to start a family. When they find themselves fostering three siblings, including a rebellious 15-year-old, they begin to realize how chaotic and complicated fostering children really is and how much they still have to learn. Byrne and Wahlberg are excellent and remarkably game. Instant Family is surprisingly sweet without losing any of its laughs. You can watch Instant Family on Netflix.
