Grand Canyon University's move to the Mountain West has been accelerated. Lopes to compete this fall
The school in Phoenix was initially scheduled to transition from the Western Athletic Conference to its new league on July 1, 2026. The Mountain West offered an earlier transition, however, allowing the school to compete for conference championships this fall.
"The addition of Grand Canyon for the 2025-26 academic year is a significant win for the student-athletes at GCU and in the Mountain West,' conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez said in a statement.
Grand Canyon will be one of 14 schools competing in the conference next season. The accelerated transition comes after five Mountain West schools announced they intend to depart the conference and join the Pac-12 in 2026. Those schools are Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Colorado State.
'Grand Canyon brings elite recruiting, a passionate fanbase, and state-of-the-art facilities, elevating the Mountain West's competitiveness and national profile," Nevarez said. "In a time when the student-athlete experience is of utmost importance, we felt it was in the best interest to allow them to compete for conference championships and the NCAA postseason immediately.'
Seventeen varsity teams will compete in the Mountain West, including men's and women's basketball which have been in the national spotlight in recent years during the NCAA Tournament. Grand Canyon's historically successful men's volleyball team was cut in April.
'GCU is excited for this opportunity for our student-athletes, the Havocs and our fanbase,' GCU athletic director Jamie Boggs said. 'After winning 76 conference championships, this opportunity best positions GCU to be nationally competitive, and we are excited about the vision and future of the Mountain West."

Marlins extend road winning streak to 11 with 12-2 win over Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Miami Marlins extended their franchise-record road winning streak to 11 with a 12-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. It's the longest road winning streak in the major leagues since the Phillies won 13 straight away from home in 2023. Eury Pérez (2-2) made his sixth start for the Marlins since returning this season from Tommy John surgery and only two hits including Matt McLain's solo homer, his 10th, in the first inning. Pérez struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. After Nick Martinez (6-9) retired the first six batters he faced, the Marlins collected six consecutive hits off him in the third, including a two-run double by Xavier Edwards to take a 7-1 lead. Martinez, who made his first start at Great American Ball Park since taking a no-hitter into the ninth against the Padres, allowed a career-high 10 earned runs on seven hits. Misiorowski allows leadoff homer to Ohtani, then dominates as Brewers beat Dodgers 3-1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski bounced back after allowing a leadoff homer to Shohei Ohtani by striking out 12 in six innings as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 on Tuesday night. The NL West-leading Dodgers have lost five straight. Ohtani opened the game by connecting on an 0-2 curveball from Misiorowski and delivering a 431-foot shot over the center-field wall. Misiorowski (4-1) responded by striking out Los Angeles' next five batters and ended up yielding only four hits and one walk to outduel three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. The 12 strikeouts represented a career high for the 6-foot-7 rookie right-hander, who was making his fifth start. The Brewers pulled ahead for good by scoring two runs off Kershaw in the fourth inning. Milwaukee added an insurance run when Sal Frelick homered off Kirby Yates in the eighth.
