Gunmen storm Madhya Pradesh home; shoot man, kidnap wife, daughters in daylight

India Today22-06-2025
A man was shot and his wife and two children were abducted at gunpoint by a group of armed men in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, officials said on Sunday. The brutal assault, captured on video and now widely circulated online, has sparked outrage and political criticism over the law and order situation in the BJP-ruled state.According to the police, over a dozen men — armed with pistols, sticks, and rods — stormed into the home of Hariram Pal. The attackers arrived in an SUV and multiple motorcycles. Without provocation, they began thrashing the family members before firing indiscriminately inside the house.advertisementHariram was shot and critically injured. He was rushed to the district hospital and is said to be in a critical condition.
The attackers then abducted Hariram's wife and two daughters, aged seven and five, dragging them into a vehicle at gunpoint as terrified bystanders watched. A video of the incident shows chaotic scenes of screams, gunfire, and armed men forcibly taking the woman and children while threatening anyone who tried to intervene.Police have identified the main accused as Sanjay Singh Rajput, a resident of the same village, who allegedly led the group of 10 to 15 assailants. The motive behind the attack is suspected to be a personal enmity, though officials are still probing the full details.Five suspects have been arrested so far, and a case has been filed against nine individuals under 11 sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), including attempted murder and kidnapping. advertisementEight of the accused remain unidentified. Police have seized the Bolero SUV and motorcycles used in the assault and conducted raids at over 25 locations. Five special teams have been formed to apprehend the remaining culprits, and a reward of Rs 10,000 has been announced for credible leads.Chhatarpur SP Agam Jain confirmed the sequence of events, stating that the assailants broke into the house, fired rounds into the air to create panic, assaulted Hariram Pal, and abducted his wife and daughters at gunpoint before fleeing. The incident has drawn sharp political reactions. Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari slammed the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government, posting on X: "In Chhatarpur, a woman and her two children were abducted in broad daylight. The accused opened fire and took them away in a car. The law and order situation in the state is collapsing". He further questioned the accountability of the Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also holds the Home portfolio, and accused the government of setting "new records of lawlessness".

Railways to set up facial recognition cameras at Secunderabad station to track criminals

Hyderabad: Secunderabad railway station, one of India's largest, is set to enhance its security infrastructure through the implementation of a facial recognition system. The initiative is part of Indian Railways' efforts across seven major stations nationwide. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As part of this, South Central Railway (SCR) authorities will maintain a detailed database using the existing CCTVs of criminals previously involved in theft cases, narcotics, drugs, and trafficking at railway stations and trains, including those who served prison sentences. The surveillance system will automatically notify the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) when a known offender enters the station premises, with these cameras continuously monitoring their movements. An alarm will sound in the control room as soon as an offender sets foot in the railway premises. 'Under the Nirbhaya funds, these surveillance cameras costing Rs 4.5 crore shall be positioned at every entry and exit point of Secunderabad station. The Research Designs & Standards Organisation has initiated trial operations and system evaluations. The station requires the installation of around 10 such cameras. Previously, while the city police installed similar cameras, they were removed during station redevelopment activities," said a senior official in SCR. According to officials, this advanced surveillance initiative aims to enhance security across railway stations. The system will analyse facial features and match them with the database of previous offenders. When a match occurs, the control room staff will receive instant notifications and can track the person's movements in real-time through networked cameras. The database will include comprehensive details such as physical descriptions, past criminal records, and patterns of offences. This digital tracking system will particularly focus on pickpockets, luggage thieves, and chain snatchers who frequently target railway passengers. Over the past 18 months, railway stations and trains in SCR jurisdiction documented around 600 theft cases. The facial recognition system will also be deployed at Mumbai, New Delhi, Howrah, Sealdah, Patna, and Chennai railway stations.

The passenger, a native of Gujarat's Tapi district, was arrested. With this seizure, smuggling of marijuana worth Rs 40 crore was thwarted by the DRI at BPIA within four days. On July 29, three persons were arrested on charges of possessing 25kg of marijuana. "The four arrested passengers were booked under sections 23(c), 43 and 8(c) of the NDPS Act. All four are believed to be carriers and not traders. Their main handlers are yet to be traced," a senior DRI officer said on the condition of anonymity. The marijuana recovered on Saturday was packed in biscuit and chocolate packets to hoodwink the enforcement agencies, but DRI sleuths managed to trace it due to its strong network of human and technical surveillance. DRI officers said moments after the flight took off from Bangkok, they received information regarding a man carrying contraband. "We deployed our personnel accordingly.
