Peterson leads lightning-delayed PGA Tour event

Perth Nowa day ago
PGA Tour rookie Paul Peterson had a one-stroke lead with three holes to play when third-round play in the lightning-delayed ISCO Championship was suspended because of darkness.
Play at Hurstbourne Country Club in Kentucky was suspended twice for a total of about three hours during Saturday afternoon in the opposite-field PGA Tour event also sanctioned by the European tour.
Peterson was five under for the round and 10 under overall. The 37-year-old stopped playing after hitting his second shot to 30 feet on the par-4 16th. He is making his 20th career PGA Tour start.
Fellow American Chan Kim, five strokes ahead entering the round, was second. He bogeyed Nos. 11 and 12 and had yet to tee off on 13 when play was called for the day.
Englishman David Skinns and Luke List were tied for third at 7 under. Skinns made an eight-foot birdie putt on the par-4 15th to close his day, while List had a bogey-free 65 to take the clubhouse lead. Twelve players were unable to finish.
The tournament winner will receive a two-year exemption and a PGA Championship spot next year. No one in the field is in the British Open next week. Harry Hall, the winner in a playoff last year at Keene Trace, qualified for the British Open and is playing the Scottish Open.

Gooch holds off home hero Rahm at LIV Golf Andalucia

Talor Gooch has held off home country hero Jon Rahm to win LIV Golf Andalucia for his second LIV Golf title in three visits to the Spanish tournament and fourth overall on the breakaway tour. American Gooch closed with a one-under 70 on Sunday to finish at eight under, one stroke ahead of Rahm, who charged with a final-round 65 as he also led his Legion XIII to their third team title of the season. Gooch has a record 13 trophies – four regular-season individual wins, seven regular-season team wins, one team championship in 2022 with 4Aces and one individual championship in 2023. Abraham Ancer was third at five under after a 66 while Australia's Matt Jones also rattled home with a 66 to tie for fourth place with Tom McKibbin and Branden Grace at four under. Fellow Aussie Cameron Smith held firm with a 70 and tied for seventh at two under as he prepares to head to Royal Portrush this week for another crack at the British Open title he won at St Andrews in 2022. It was a vastly improved showing from Smith's all-Australian Ripper GC team on the final day as they jumped from equal last overnight to finish sixth at four over. While Jones and Smith led the way, Lucas Herbert (T32nd, four over) and Marc Leishman (T50th, 10 over) also broke par on the final day.

Palmer show as Chelsea beat PSG to win Club World Cup

Cole Palmer has racked up two goals and one assist in a sensational first half as Chelsea toppled Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 to win the FIFA Club World Cup. Palmer scored in the 22nd and 30th minutes of Sunday's final in New Jersey and Joao Pedro tacked on the third goal right before halftime, capitalising on Palmer's fine touch into the box. Robert Sanchez, meanwhile, saved six shots in his best showing of the tournament. Chelsea, who won the 2021 Club World Cup that featured only eight teams, battled past Portugal's Benfica and Brazilian sides Palmeiras and Fluminense in the knockouts to face Paris Saint-Germain -- six weeks removed from their first UEFA Champions League trophy. PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma made two saves on five shots on goal. The European champions had allowed just one goal in their first six matches of the Cup. The frustrated Parisians went down to 10 men in the 85th minute when Joao Neves pulled Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella by the hair, was caught on video review and shown red. Altercations spilled past the final whistle, and PSG coach Luis Enrique appeared to grab at Pedro's neck while he and Donnarumma confronted Chelsea players. Cucurella made a crucial stop to keep the game scoreless in the 16th minute. Fabian Ruiz made a great pass across the box to Desire Doue, who could have shot it but instead tried a centering pass to a teammate that Cucurella intercepted. Six minutes later, Palmer -- whose first attempt barely missed wide left in the eighth -- got the scoring started. Malo Gusto picked up a wayward header from PSG's Nuno Mendes and ran into the box. After a fancy dribble to create space, his shot was blocked right back to his feet, so he fed Palmer for a left-footer to the bottom left corner. Levi Colwill earned the assist on the second goal for his long ball downfield to Palmer. From there, Palmer calmly dribbled toward the center of the 18-yard line and fired the same low, left-footer for an identical goal. In the 43rd, Palmer tapped a pass between two defenders for Pedro, who popped his shot over a sprawling Donnarumma's right shoulder. Sanchez dove to meet Neves' stoppage-time header just before the goal line. His heroics continued in the second half, as he swatted away a shot by Ousmane Dembele from close range.

Allan goes wire-to-wire for second Champions Tour win

Australia's Steve Allan has claimed his second PGA Tour Champions title as he became the first wire-to-wire winner of the Dick's Sporting Goods Open. The 51-year-old Victorian closed with a six-under 66 for a four-stroke victory. Allan finished at 18-under 198 at En-Joie Golf Course at Enditcott, New York for his second win on the 50-and-over tour this season following his breakthrough at the Galleri Classic in California in March. He opened the tournament with a blistering 63 on Friday for a two-shot edge and had a 69 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over Boo Weekley into the final round. After playing the first seven holes Sunday in one under with two birdies and a bogey, Allan birdied five of the next six and parred the last five. "It was tough. It was tough, even yesterday, hanging in there, and today early on it was a bit rough with the driver," Allan said. "In the rough a lot and just managed to hang in there. Then on the back nine, made a few putts." Jason Caron was second after a 68. Weekley (70) and Notah Begay III (67) tied for third at 13 under. Australia's Michael Wright shot a closing 67 to tie for fifth with Soren Kjeldsen (64) and Jeff Sluman (68). Padraig Harrington wasn't back to try to win for a fourth straight time, skipping the event to play in the Scottish Open. He also has the British Open at Royal Portrush and the Senior British Open at Royal Porthcawl. Ernie Els, in the British Open field, shot 69 to tie for 16th at 8 under.
