The Welshman part of Hong Kong China rugby history

Yahooa day ago
Hong Kong China have made history by qualifying for a first World Cup, and a Welsh rugby stalwart helped them do it after a 6,000-mile gamble.
Former Dragons captain Lewis Evans, whose 236 appearances remains a club record, has been part of the national set-up since 2021 and was on the management team for a sixth successive Asia Rugby Championship triumph.
The trophy, earned by a 70-22 hammering of Korea, wasn't the main prize this year, it was a place at the expanded 24-team Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027.
Forwards and defence coach Evans, a back-row forward in his playing days, will watch December's draw with interest.
The 38-year-old from Newport could be hatching plans for South Africa, New Zealand, France, England, Ireland or even Wales as Hong Kong, currently ranked 23rd in the world, aim to earn respect Down Under.
"We aren't going to win the World Cup, but look at what Portugal did last time, we want to be the darlings of the tournament," said Evans, referring to the European minnows who stunned Fiji and drew with Georgia.
"Winning one game will be a challenge and so would be staying competitive given that we are going up against top teams.
"Facing South Africa, Ireland, New Zealand, England would be very tough, but if you can't build yourself up for that…
"Give us another year with a full-time programme and we will show that we've got good players who deserve to go up against quality teams.
"Expansion of the World Cup is important to give emerging nations the chance to be on that big stage trying to compete."

Building to qualification
Evans was head coach when Hong Kong were close to qualification in 2022 after winning the Asia Rugby Championship.
They lost to Tonga in a play-off then took part in a qualification tournament that featured USA, Kenya and winners Portugal.
The expanded 2027 World Cup, with 24 teams split into six groups, presented a big opportunity that they took.
"Since the Chinese New Year we have had 22 players who are full-time and that has got them physically fitter and working to a game plan," said Evans.
"We are in a good place to build and are able to utilise sevens boys, who are full-time, while other players are on a hybrid model.
"We have personal trainers, teachers, bankers and our starting 12, Tommy Hill, is a crypto solicitor who has made a lot of sacrifices."
'Leap of faith'
Evans was a whole-hearted back-rower over 15 seasons for the Dragons and his exploits earned two Wales call-ups.
He was denied a place on the summer tour to North America in 2009 because of a fixture clash with a European Cup play-off and missed out on the matchday squad for the post-World Cup Test against Australia in 2011.
The move to Hong Kong in 2021 has given the former Wales Sevens and age-grade international a chance to experience Test rugby.
"It was a big jump considering that I had never lived further than three or four miles from the M4," he said.
"To suddenly move 6,000 miles away to Hong Kong was a big leap of faith and it was initially the plan to do two years and come back. Four years on and I have just signed another two-year contract."
Evans works under New Zealander Andrew Douglas on a staff that features former Scotland prop Alex Allan, South African Marno Meyer and Kiwi Logan Asplin.
"It will be a six-year mission that I have loved and leaving my comfort zone has been massive for my coaching development," said Evans, who worked with Dragons age-grade teams, Newport RFC and his boyhood club Newport High School Old Boys in Caerleon while playing.
"Hong Kong is a brilliant place for a young coach because you get experience of international rugby, but also work alongside coaches from around the world and are exposed to different ideas and thinking."
Welsh connections
Evans is following in the footsteps of the likes of Leigh Jones, Dai Rees and Will Thomas in Hong Kong and is part of a sizeable Welsh contingent featuring former Cardiff coach Paul John, ex-Dragons forward Jevon Groves, former Dragons and Ospreys back Tom Isaacs and ex-Newport RFC favourite Adam Frampton.
But would the former flanker, who is expecting a daughter with partner Lizzie in the coming weeks, return home for the next step of his professional coaching journey?
"At the age of 25 I would have said that I'd eventually love a transitional role before going on to become forwards coach or head coach at the Dragons, but it didn't work out that way," he said.
"The ambition is to come back to the UK, but leaving for Hong Kong opened my eyes up and in coaching you have to be ready to take the opportunities when they come."
First, Evans has a World Cup to build towards.

Sho Tsuboi's Haas F1 test is an 'audition', says Toyota

Toyota has dismissed the notion that Sho Tsuboi's maiden Formula 1 test opportunity with Haas at Fuji Speedway is a 'reward' for his title success in Super Formula. The Japanese marque's director of global motorsport Masaya Kaji characterised the TPC test, which will take place on 6-7 August with the two-year-old Haas VF-23, as an 'audition' that will be used to gauge Tsuboi's future potential. Tsuboi will be in action on the second day of the test at Toyota's home circuit, while Haas reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa will take the wheel on the opening day. 'What comes next totally depends on Tsuboi's performance and on his communication with the team,' Kaji told 'This is a kind of audition, or selection. It's not just for his experience. We would like to assess his real level of performance. 'He must make a big effort especially to communicate in English. But the main target is to understand his potential. 'Currently his performance is the best among the Japanese drivers, so it's quite interesting for us, also for the other drivers in Japan and motorsport fans.' Ryo Hirakawa, Haas F1 Kaji described ex-Super Formula racer Hirakawa, who has made two FP1 outings for Haas so far this year and another for Alpine, as a 'good benchmark' for Tsuboi. He did however concede that differing conditions between the two days would make direct comparisons in terms of lap times during the test difficult. Tsuboi becomes the latest Toyota-affiliated driver to get behind the wheel of the VF-23 in Haas's newly-established TPC programme this year following Ritomo Miyata, his predecessor as Super Formula champion, and Kamui Kobayashi. Formula 2 racer Miyata sampled the Haas at Jerez in January, while ex-Sauber and Caterham F1 driver Kobayashi drove the VF-23 in June at Paul Ricard in a run aimed at enabling him to better coach Toyota's stable of youngsters in future. Kaji wouldn't be drawn on who could be next in line for an F1 test from Toyota's domestic roster, but stressed that results in Super Formula will not be the decisive factor. 'To be honest, we don't have any clear boundaries,' Kaji continued. 'Tsuboi has very good potential, so it's not only about his results. The test is not a reward for becoming Super Formula champion. Ritomo Miyata, VANTELIN TEAM TOM'S 'We will not have the same situation for other drivers [in future] who become champion. It is purely based on performance.' Following his run for Haas in January, Miyata has also driven in TPC tests for Alpine, firstly at Zandvoort and then at Monza. Those opportunities came despite Miyata struggling for performance in his second season of F2 with ART Grand Prix, although he achieved a season-best result of second in wet conditions at Spa, having qualified in the same position. 'At the moment, we want to give him as much experience as we can," said Kaji of Miyata. "It's important to give him the environment where he can focus on driving, regardless of the team or the car.' James Harden Surprised By Tribute Court Unveiling In China

James Harden Surprised By Tribute Court Unveiling In China originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden truly embodies what it means to be a global superstar. In his recent Uno tour of China with Adidas, Harden has drawn in huge groups of fans, and to the star's surprise, Adidas also unveiled a tribute court in his honor. From celebrating his legacy at malls to constructing a tribute court, the fans and the apparel brand pulled out all the stops. The court features a full-length mural of Harden, an impressive work of art that surprised Harden as well. Given the popularity of basketball in the country, several NBA players have been to China recently as part of individual offseason tours. D'Angelo Russell received a lot of attention as people lined up to meet him at a mall. Meanwhile, Harden's teammate, Kawhi Leonard, is also expected to make a stop in China as part of his Asia tour and is expected to be joined by Trail Blazers rookie Yang Hansen. However, the scale of excitement pales in comparison to Harden's reception. The Clippers guard has garnered a lot of attention from enthusiastic fans in the country, who have come in droves to see him. Given the kind of treatment he has received in China, his status as a global icon is indisputable. The 11-time All-Star saw a massive resurgence over the last season with the Clippers. After an underwhelming debut season with the team, Harden made an impressive turnaround, leading the team in Leonard's absence and even securing a playoff berth. In the 2024-25 season, he recorded an average of 22.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 8.7 assists, while shooting 41.0% from the field and 35.7% from beyond the arc. This performance was reminiscent of the Harden of old, a positive sight for the Clippers organization as well as the fanbase. Expectations are high for L.A. heading into next season. Spurred by Harden's decision to take a pay cut in the offseason, the Clippers have been able to make some key signings and trades to become a significantly more competitive team. With some incredibly talented veterans joining the team, the Clippers are undoubtedly viewed as title contenders, despite criticism about their age. The Clippers have a strong shot at success next season. Led by a capable star duo, L.A. could emerge as one of the top teams in the West. The biggest point of concern, especially with an older roster, is injury. With Leonard being among the most injury-prone players in the league, the onus falls upon Harden to lead this team by example. Unfortunately, concerns about his health seem to be on the rise, as a recent clip of him at a training facility in China showed him appearing out of story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Aug 5, 2025, where it first appeared.

Barcelona starlet to consider exit offers this week

Barcelona are on their way back from South Korea after completing their preseason tour to Asia in Daegu with a 5-0 victory. When they return, the Blaugrana will be in the home straight of their preseason, and decisions are set to be made on the futures of some of their players. While that will likely involve a development plan for youngsters like Guille Fernandez, Toni Fernandez, Dro Fernandez, Roony Bardghji and Jofre Torrents, it could mean a permanent exit for Hector Fort. The 18-year-old spent last year in the first team, but was rarely trusted by Hansi Flick, and grew frustrated with his game time. Despite this, he has thus far maintained a desire to reamain at the club. Hector Fort to analyse exit offers this week Fort appears to have come round to the idea of an exit though. Barcelona are in favour of a transfer, as they try to clear some space in their salary limit, but Fort has multiple offers say Sport, both for a permanent deal and a loan. Paris FC have been cited as an interested party if their move for Hamari Traore does not go through, while Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan are also looking at the teenage prospect.
