Laos–Korea Agro Fair marks 30 years of growing partnership

The Star09-06-2025

VIENTIANE: The Laos–Korea Agro Fair 2025 took place in Vientiane from June 6-7 to celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations between Laos and the Republic of Korea, while also highlighting achievements in agricultural cooperation and rural development.
The event provided a platform to strengthen ties in sustainable agriculture and rural income generation between the two nations.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), the fair brought together Lao villagers, Korean NGOs, the Korea Programme on International Agriculture, the Saemaul Foundation and agro-food companies.
Exhibitions focused on rural development, community empowerment, farmer income generation, and business linkages between Lao and Korean agri-food enterprises.
KOICA showcased results from its flagship project, 'Establishment of an Action Plan for Rural Income Generation in the Northern and Central Regions of the Lao PDR (2021–2025)'.
Villagers from 14 communities participating in the project displayed and sold locally grown and processed goods, demonstrating the commercial potential of regional specialities and smallholder farming.
The project, implemented with the Department of Rural Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Korea Development Strategy Institute (KDS), supports community-led development in 14 villages across Vientiane, Borikhamxay and Xieng Khuang provinces.
Meanwhile, KOTRA facilitated the import and customs clearance of Korean agri-food products, which were sold by Lao buyers at 11 booths. Local distributors such as GUBI Co., Ltd. and NEXUS SOLE Co., Ltd. marketed items including health supplements, beverages and snacks, while gathering feedback from consumers.
In a special initiative, the top three winners of the Korea–Laos Food Pairing Idea Contest signed memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with the 33 Tteokbokki franchise. Their Lao–Korean fusion dishes will launch at the franchise's store opening in July. The winners also presented their creations in live cooking demonstrations, which drew enthusiastic responses from attendees.
In recognition of booth performance, KOTRA presented awards to three of the 11 participating booths at the fair. First prize went to Nexus Sole Co., Ltd., followed by the Vone brand name with second prize, while AK Trading Co., Ltd. was awarded the third prize.
The fair helped to raise the profile of Korean agri-food brands in Laos. KOTRA plans to continue supporting buyer-led operations and demand-driven export models for sustainable market expansion.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos, Yungsoo Jung; Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr Linkham Douangsavanh; KOICA Laos Country Director, Sungsoo Oh; KOTRA Vientiane Director, Jungwe Park; and the Deputy Governors of Xieng Khuang and Vientiane provinces.
Ambassador Jung said, 'Marking 30 years of diplomatic ties, Korea and Laos are celebrating their upgraded comprehensive partnership through sectoral events—June highlighting agriculture and rural development as both countries pursue a mutually beneficial partnership.'
Minister Dr Linkham noted, 'The Laos–Korea Agro Fair is a platform for farmers and institutions to exchange knowledge and innovations. It is also a meaningful occasion for the peoples of Korea and Laos to showcase their strengths and reflect on 30 years of close cooperation.'
KOICA Director Oh Seong-su said, 'This fair was a meaningful occasion to reflect on our journey of agricultural and rural development cooperation and to chart a shared path forward. KOICA is committed to field-based collaboration that supports community-centred rural growth.'
Jungwe Park of KOTRA added, 'This fair served as a valuable opportunity to understand the markets and cultures of both countries through various programs and to lay the groundwork for practical business cooperation. We look forward to the continued expansion of agricultural collaboration and economic exchange between the two nations.'
The two-day fair attracted more than 3,000 visitors, offering a diverse selection of agricultural products and processed goods from both countries.
The event is seen as a milestone in advancing sustainable agricultural development and expanding public–private partnerships in the agri-food sector. - Vientiane Times/ANN

South Korea–Malaysia FTA To Deepen Ties, Says Envoy

BUSINESS By Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi & & Nur Elysa Amirah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- South Korean Ambassador to Malaysia, Yeo Seung Bae, expressed Seoul's strong commitment to concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) with Malaysia, saying the partnership is poised to become stronger and more comprehensive. Yeo said both leaders have reaffirmed their intention to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, green growth, infrastructure, digital transformation, and the defence industry. 'Having held more than nine rounds of negotiations, we have now entered the final phase. 'So I expect when the two leaders meet, likely on the occasion of the ASEAN summit in late October, FTA negotiations will be finalised, which would be very good news for both peoples," he told Bernama. He said the Korea–Malaysia FTA is not merely a conventional trade and investment agreement, but a comprehensive one that also covers digital transition, the digital economy, the green economy, and the bio-economy. "These are so-called future industry, high-value, high-tech industry. So through this bilateral free trade agreement, not only Korean businesses or Korean people, but also Malaysian people and Malaysian people's businesses, farmers and even fishers will get some benefit. "Because the contents of FTA are not revealed publicly yet, so I cannot say more details about that, but what can I say, yes, we have a very promising future for both countries in terms of industry and business cooperation," he added. On June 23, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in a substantive and mutually beneficial manner, including efforts to conclude the FTA.

On June 23, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in a substantive and mutually beneficial manner, including efforts to conclude the FTA. The understanding was reached during their first phone conversation, in which Anwar also extended his congratulations to Lee on his inauguration as South Korea's president. Yeo said under President Lee's new administration, which took office on June 4, South Korea is expected to pursue pragmatic diplomacy aimed at fostering peace and co-prosperity. "It is a bit early to say in detail because Korea's new government has been in office only three weeks, but the new President (President Lee) during the presidential election had made clear that the new government is expected to pursue pragmatic diplomacy and strengthen partnership with ASEAN. "This year is a special year for Korea and Malaysia. Malaysia chairs the ASEAN summit, and Korea will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit meeting, so we expect to see frequent high-level engagement, including leaders' meetings," he added. South Korea is Malaysia's eighth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding US$20 billion (US$1 = RM4.29) for three consecutive years.

North Korea eyeing Russian tourists for new beach resort: Seoul

North Korean leader Kim Jong-y-un (left) and his daughter Kim Ju-ae (front right) visiting the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area in Kangwon Province, North Korea.- AFP SEOUL: North Korea is expected to court Russian tourists following the completion of its Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone, which is set to open first to domestic travellers in July, South Korea's Unification Ministry said on Thursday (June 26). It noted that construction – which was suspended for an extended period – resumed in 2024, possibly with support from Russia and expectation of attracting Russian tourists. North Korean state media reported on June 26 on the completion ceremony of the Wonsan-Kalma beach resort. It was held on June 25 and attended by leader Kim Jong Un and family members. The resort is set to open to domestic visitors on July 1, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. It reported that the tourist zone is 'equipped with hotels and inns capable of accommodating around 20,000 people, allowing domestic and international visitors to choose accommodations that suit their preferences' in a Korean-language report. The Russian ambassador to North Korea and embassy members were invited as special guests, according to the state media report. A Unification Ministry official said on condition of anonymity during a closed-door briefing: 'Operations are expected to gradually expand to include Russian tourists, beginning with domestic tourism on July 1. 'The fact that the Russian ambassador was invited and highlighted (in the state media report) also appears to have been intended with Russian tourists in mind.' The official added: 'North Korea has regarded tourism as very important while recognising it as a key means of earning foreign currency. 'Tourism itself is not a violation of sanctions. However, tourism operations that involve bulk cash transfers or are conducted in the form of cooperative projects or joint ventures with North Korea could constitute a violation of sanctions.' 'On the other hand, individual tourists paying their own expenses on a cost-reimbursement basis would not be considered a sanctions violation,' the official said. UN Security Council Resolution 2270 prohibits the transfer of bulk cash to North Korea, and Resolution 2375 bans all UN member states from creating any new joint ventures with North Korean entities or individuals. North Korea's decision to resume years-long construction of the Wonsan-Kalma coastal tourist zone in 2024 could be related to a closer alignment with Russia during the country's grinding war against Ukraine. 'Since North Korea's involvement in the Ukraine war, it is believed that the country has received various forms of material support from Russia – support that may have contributed economically to the completion of the Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone,' the official said. 'Additionally, there is a possibility that North Korea will actively seek to attract Russian tourists, which could explain the renewed push to promote the project.' North Korea initially designated the area along the coast connecting Wonsan and Mount Kumgang as a tourist zone in 2014. KCNA previously reported that a groundbreaking ceremony for the Wonsan region took place in May 2015. North Korea originally set a goal of completing the tourist zone by April 15, 2019 to mark the birth anniversary of the country's late founder Kim Il Sung. However, the project was repeatedly delayed due to difficulties in securing construction materials under international sanctions. Construction was halted following the outbreak of Covid-19 and remained suspended until 2024. The official, however, underscored that Seoul needs to watch how much tourism in the Wonsan-Kalma coastal zone can actually be realised 'due to various limitations in transportation infrastructure'. Based on the number of flights and the size of aircraft operating between Pyongyang and Vladivostok, the maximum number of people who could travel via Pyongyang to the Wonsan-Kalma coastal zone in a single day would be around 170. The official also explained that there has been no progress in resuming Chinese group tours, which were suspended after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in January 2020. - The Korea Herald/ANN
