Scientists at Johns Hopkins University in the US have created a new blood test that can pick up signs of cancer up to three years before any symptoms appear.

So, what is this new test? And what did the researchers discover from the study?

What the researchers found
The study showed that small traces of cancer can be found in a person's blood as early as three years before they are formally diagnosed.
This raises the possibility that doctors could one day spot cancer much sooner, when it is easier to treat or even cure.
When someone has cancer, tumours release tiny fragments of genetic material into the bloodstream. The researchers found that this material can be detected in blood samples well before any symptoms show up.

Dr Yuxuan Wang, one of the study's authors, said, 'We were surprised to find cancer signals in the blood so early. Finding cancer three years earlier gives us a chance to treat it before it spreads.'
To conduct the research, scientists used plasma samples from a major Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, which looks at risk factors linked to heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and other heart-related conditions, according to a press release.
They examined blood from 26 people who were diagnosed with cancer within six months of giving the sample, and compared it with samples from 26 people who were not diagnosed with cancer.

Out of the 52 people, eight tested positive using a multi-cancer early detection (MCED) lab test and were later diagnosed with cancer within four months of their blood being drawn.
Notably, MCED tests are an experimental method of screening that checks for signs of several types of cancer at the same time. According to the American Cancer Society, these tests can look for pieces of DNA, RNA or proteins from abnormal cells.
In six of the eight cancer cases, the researchers went back to check earlier blood samples, taken more than three years before diagnosis. In four of those cases, cancer markers were already present.
What do the results mean?
Dr Bert Vogelstein, senior author and professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins, said, 'This study shows the promise of MCED tests in detecting cancers very early, and sets the benchmark sensitivities required for their success.'
Dr Nickolas Papadopoulos, also a senior author and professor of oncology, added, 'Detecting cancers years before their clinical diagnosis could help provide management with a more favourable outcome. Of course, we need to determine the appropriate clinical follow-up after a positive test for such cancers.'
At present, no MCED test has received full approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for general use. However, some are available commercially under more flexible rules as Laboratory Developed Tests.

Experts say MCED tests are not meant to replace current screening methods but could become useful tools for detecting cancers earlier, particularly those like colon cancer, which are often diagnosed at later stages.
Of the eight participants whose cancers were picked up by the MCED test months before diagnosis, five later died from the disease.
According to The New York Post, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers, more than two million new cancer cases are expected in the US in 2025, with over 618,000 people projected to die from the illness.
That means nearly 1,700 deaths every day.

But these drugs were found to have a side effect that triggered substantial, sustained weight loss. Demand rose from people wanting to lose weight, and that caused a shortage. Fakes have filled the gap. Fake drugs are a global problem Drug counterfeiting is a major global problem . The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that one in 10 pharmaceuticals are fakes that carry no guarantee of any health benefits. While this is mainly a problem in low-and-middle income countries, especially parts of Africa and Asia, around 1% of people in high-income nations also obtain medication from unregulated sources. In some cases, these drugs may have no effect. In other cases, however, ingredients in the fake medication may lead to adverse reactions or create new health problems. "Purchasing medicine online from unregulated, unlicensed sources can expose patients to potentially unsafe products that have not undergone appropriate evaluation or approval, or do not meet quality standards," said the US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2023, when it issued its first warnings about the problem. In 2024, the WHO issued a global warning that batches of fake Ozempic were flooding the black market. More recently, in July 2025, data from the UK National Pharmacy Association found one in five Britons had attempted to obtain weight loss treatments in the previous year. It warned that the high demand for these medicines carried the risk that people would "resort to unregulated online suppliers instead of regulated pharmacies." Where are people buying counterfeit medicine? Unregulated pharmaceuticals are being sold via online-only pharmacies, international drug shopping and organised criminal distributors. These digital marketplaces are not online stores for established pharmacies, but sites that seemingly offer medicine at a fraction of the usual cost. The drugs may look identical to genuine medicines online, but when delivered often have spelling errors on the packet or incorrect ingredient listings. But it's not only fake drugs or placebos. Regulators have raised concern about compounding, where medicines that have been approved individually can be formulated to produce non-regulated "compounds" for individual patients. In some regions of the world, including the US, trained pharmacists are allowed to compound medicines, but even then, the practice is less regulated than the stringent approvals that drug manufacturers must meet to bring their products to market. For example, when the FDA temporarily allowed the compounding of weight loss drugs to address a product shortage, some pharmacists used semaglutide salts — which are not approved by regulators — instead of semaglutide itself. This led to reports of side effects. And it wasn't just trained compounding pharmacies that were formulating these products in the US. Ahmed said, "this is done in [places] like gymnasiums and spas." The FDA has now stopped allowing compounded versions of these weight loss drugs, but it is concerned that unregulated online pharmacies are still making substandard products available. Raising awareness about fake drugs To address concerns that consumers may seek unsafe products from unregulated sources, the FDA operates a campaign called BeSafeRx that provides guidance for consumers to identify genuine pharmaceuticals. In the European Union, safety features on medicines are mandated, and include standardized labeling practices. In a statement provided to DW, the European Medicines Agency said "patients should only use online retailers registered with the national competent authorities in the EU Member States, to reduce the risk of buying substandard or falsified medicines." Europol, which is responsible for law enforcement for pharmaceutical crime across member states, has coordinated regular actions across the bloc in collaboration with US and Colombian partners. In a 2023 operation, more than 1,284 people were charged for offenses related to the trafficking of counterfeit and misused medicines and doping substances. As well as local awareness campaigns and enforcement initiatives, the key measure, Ahmed said, was to help improve awareness between patients and their health practitioners. Ahmed heads the Johns Hopkins University's BESAFE initiative, which investigates risks and interventions to prevent the uptake of substandard and counterfeit medication. Surveys undertaken by BESAFE have found that within the US and South Africa, awareness of where to safely buy prescriptions and report fakes or adverse events is low. He said building trust between consumers, medical practitioners and regulators may help avoid the risks of counterfeit and unregulated drug purchases.

A team of evolutionary biologists and genome researchers has traced the potato's roots back to an unexpected meeting with one of its distant relatives: the tomato. The scientists studied 450 genomes from both wild and farmed potato varieties. Their research showed that a wild tomato plant mixed naturally with a potato-like plant known as Etuberosum around nine million years ago. Both these plants had branched off from a shared ancestor nearly 14 million years ago, according to a study published on Thursday in the journal Cell. At that time, neither the tomato nor the Etuberosum could grow tubers, the underground, nutrient-rich parts of plants like potatoes, yams or taro. But the hybrid plant they formed could. Once people began farming them, they became a vital part of human diets. Zhiyang Zhang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the lead author of the study, said, 'A potato is the child of tomato and Etuberosum.' 'We did this analysis and we found, 'Oh, he's a child of two plants.'' JianQuan Liu, a coauthor of the study and a professor at Lanzhou University in China, told CNN that the team used phylogenetic analysis, a method that traces genetic relationships in a way similar to drawing family trees in humans. This helped them uncover the link between the plants. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Their analysis showed that the modern potato contains a 'mosaic-like' pattern of DNA, with traits inherited from both the tomato and Etuberosum. The findings suggest this mix came from a single interbreeding event between eight and nine million years ago. This was possible because the two plants shared a common ancestor 13 to 14 million years ago. Even though they evolved on separate paths after that, they still had enough genetic similarity to interbreed some five million years later. The new potato plant that resulted from this pairing developed tubers, a trait that scientists have now linked to certain genes. Interestingly, while Etuberosum itself does not produce tubers, the potato inherited that ability through its unique blend of genes. Genetically, potatoes still show a closer link to tomatoes. So why do they look like one plant but behave like another? The answer lies in their complex origins. Researchers have found that modern potatoes developed tubers thanks to their mixed ancestry, formed when the tomato and Etuberosum lineages combined around eight to nine million years ago. This hybridisation gave rise to the first tuber-producing plants. The study said that the genes behind tuber formation came from both parent plants. The SP6A gene, which tells the plant when to start making tubers, came from the tomato. The IT1 gene, which helps grow the underground stems that become tubers, was passed down from Etuberosum. This genetic mix allowed early potatoes to adapt and spread through the cold, mountainous regions of the Andes. The ability to grow tubers helped the plant store food and water underground, making it more suited to survive in harsh conditions than either tomatoes or Etuberosum. This adaptation gave the potato plant a survival edge. It also kept it from breeding again with tomatoes or Etuberosum, eventually forming a new plant group known as Petota.
