Artificial intelligence pioneer OpenAI plans to launch its GPT-5 model as early as August, The Verge reported on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the plans. The new model, which was expected to launch this summer, will be positioned as an AI system that incorporates distinct models and can perform different functions as opposed to just a single AI model.OpenAI did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The Microsoft-backed startup's GPT-5 will incorporate its o3 model along with other technologies, CEO Sam Altman had said in February, in a bid to simplify its offerings. The startup ultimately aims to merge the o-series and GPT-series models as it looks to create AI systems that can utilize all available tools and handle a variety of tasks."While GPT-5 looks likely to debut in early August, OpenAI's planned release dates often shift to respond to development challenges, server capacity issues, or even rival AI model announcements and leaks," according to the report.

OpenAI introduces study mode for deeper, structured learning for students

OpenAI on Tuesday announced the launch of a 'study mode' in its large-language model-based chatbot, ChatGPT, to help students work through problems instead of simply getting the answer to a question. The new 'study mode' will be available to all logged-in users of ChatGPT's Free, Plus, Pro, and Team versions. It will also be available with ChatGPT Edu over the next few weeks, the company said in a blog post. Since its introduction, ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used learning tools for students worldwide, used for tackling challenging homework, preparing for exams, and exploring new concepts and ideas, according to OpenAI. 'But its use in education has also raised an important question: how do we ensure it is used to support real learning, and doesn't just offer solutions without helping students make sense of them,' the company said. In 'study mode', ChatGPT will prompt students to interact with questions tailored to their objective and skill level, helping them build a deeper understanding of the subject. The new mode has been built on system instructions developed by OpenAI in collaboration with teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts. The key features of the new mode include prompting students, providing responses in easy-to-follow sections, personalised learning support, quizzes, and open-ended questions to check learning on a continuous basis, as OpenAI stated in the post. 'As we run longer-term studies on how students learn best with AI, we intend to publish a deeper analysis of what we have learned about the links between model design and cognition, shape future product experiences based on these insights, and work side by side with the broader education ecosystem to ensure AI benefits learners worldwide,' OpenAI said. The leading global company in AI has introduced a range of new features in its products over the past few years. Earlier this year, in April, OpenAI introduced updates that allowed users to search, compare, and buy products in ChatGPT by providing personalised recommendations for products, visual details of the product they are looking for, the price, as well as a direct link to purchase it. In February 2024, OpenAI said it was 'testing the ability for ChatGPT to remember things you discuss to make future chats more helpful'. The idea, OpenAI had then said, was to save users from 'having to repeat information' so that future conversations with the chatbot became more useful. The memory feature was rolled out to all users in September that year. In an update on April 10 this year, OpenAI said that the memory in ChatGPT was now comprehensive as the LLM could, in addition to memories saved by users, also reference past conversations between the chatbot and the user to deliver more personalised responses. In December 2024, OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT's integration with WhatsApp, where users could send a message to ChatGPT to get up-to-date answers.

Republican Guv Ron DeSantis calls H-1B visa a scam, says it's not illegal but...

Florida Guv Ron DeSantis called H-1B visa program a scam. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the H-1B visa program a total scam as Americans are getting laid off, making way for foreign workers. H-1B is the visa program that allows US companies to hire foreign workers. It has become a contentious issue as US big techs including Microsoft, Intel announced major layoffs. Republicans want H-1B to end while the Donald Trump administration is planning major changes in the program. 'They're laying off all these American workers and then they're importing H1B visa people to work for cheaper. I think that's a total scam. I don't think that's good. Yes, it is legal the way they're doing it. I acknowledge that. They're using something that's on the books. But is that good policy for us as a country to have Americans put out of work and then to bring in H1B (visas)? And then they do chain migration from the H1B. So the H1B is bringing in other folks,' DeSantis said. DeSantis compared the dynamic to indentured servitude, citing how H‑1B workers are tied to a single employer, which companies exploit to cut costs. Earlier in January 2025, he called out broad issues with the H‑1B system, sharply criticizing practices where Americans train H‑1B workers who then replace them, asking how such a system could even be acceptable. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo The comment came as recently vice president JD Vance spoke about the H-1B issue and said the displacement of American workers makes him worried. "You see some big tech companies where they'll lay off 9,000 workers, and then they'll apply for a bunch of overseas visas. And I sort of wonder; that doesn't totally make sense to me." "That displacement and that math worries me a bit. And what the president has said, he said very clearly: We want the very best and the brightest to make America their home. We want them to build great companies and so forth. But I don't want companies to fire 9,000 American workers and then to go and say, 'We can't find workers here in America.' That's a bullshit story," he said.

Microsoft launches AI-based Copilot Mode in Edge browser

Microsoft on Monday launched a new "Copilot Mode" on its Edge browser that uses artificial intelligence to improve the browsing experience, as the tech giant rushes to compete with rivals launching AI-based browsers and web search features. Copilot Mode can help carry out tasks, organize browsing into topic-based queries and compare results across all open tabs without requiring users to switch between them, Microsoft said. The update comes at a time when tech companies have rolled out several AI-powered online search tools. Nvidia-backed startup Perplexity AI launched its Comet browser earlier this month, while Reuters reported on OpenAI's upcoming AI browser. Rival Alphabet earlier this year launched " AI Mode ", an AI-only search feature on Google, and last week reported improvements in user engagement on such features. Microsoft said, under the new feature, users will see a page with a single input box combining chat, search and web navigation features. Copilot will also support voice navigation for browsing in Edge, the company added. The users will also soon be able to give Copilot permission to access additional browser context, such as user history and credentials, to take more concrete actions like making bookings or managing errands. Copilot will only be able to access browsing content when users enable it, and will provide visual cues to let users know when it is active in the background, Microsoft said. The feature will be available for free across Copilot markets in Windows and Mac PCs for a limited time and users can choose to opt out of it through Edge settings.
