The Sun16-05-2025
PETALING JAYA: Magma Group Bhd's wholly owned subsidiary, Magma Chain Management Sdn Bhd, has signed a strategic joint venture and a subscription agreement with Chagee (M) Sdn Bhd, a premium tea brand, to accelerate the development of Chagee's retail footprint across Malaysia through a phased retail rollout.
The joint venture marks a key milestone in Magma's diversification strategy in the premium food and beverage retail segment.
Chagee will hold a 60% stake and Magma the remaining 40% in the new joint venture company, Chagee Magma Sdn Bhd.
Chagee Magma aims to open up to 300 directly managed Chagee outlets across Malaysia over the next three years through a phased rollout, subject to prevailing market conditions.
Magma group managing director and group CEO Datuk Seri Thomas Liang Chee Fong said the joint venture reflects the company's strategic vision to diversify into high-growth lifestyle and consumer segments.
'The partnership leverages Chagee's proven operational excellence and strong consumer appeal, recently reinforced by its successful listing on Nasdaq, alongside Magma's deep expertise in local market development and execution.
'Together, we see substantial opportunities to capture significant value within Malaysia's expanding premium tea market,' he said in a statement.
The collaboration combines Chagee's established brand strength, global credibility and premium product offerings with Magma's local market insights and development expertise to jointly facilitate the rollout of new outlets.
Leveraging Magma's hospitality background and commercial presence in Malaysia, the partnership is well-positioned to accelerate Chagee's nationwide expansion and respond to growing demand for premium, lifestyle-oriented beverage experiences.
Further, the joint venture aligns with Magma Group's broader vision to build a diversified portfolio that meets the evolving lifestyle preferences of Malaysia's dynamic consumer base, driving sustainable long-term shareholder value.
Chagee is a leading premium tea drinks brand, serving healthy and delicious freshly made tea beverages. It entered the Malaysian market in 2019 under the name BaWangChaJi, before unifying its global branding under the Chagee name in September 2021.
Today, Malaysia is Chagee's largest market outside of China, and its Malaysian operations are halal-certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia.

#NST180years: From straits to strides - NST's legacy of unwavering journalism

THE New Straits Times is celebrating an extraordinary milestone of 180 years in publication, reflecting a legacy that has indelibly shaped Malaysia's narrative. This "illustrious voice in Malaysian journalism" stands as this country's longest-running newspaper, a testament to its enduring relevance and unwavering commitment to chronicling the nation's journey. The roots of this publication trace back to July 15, 1845, with the launch of The Straits Times and Singapore Journal of Commerce from its first office at No. 7 Commercial Square (present-day Raffles Place) in Singapore. This laid the groundwork for decades of journalistic excellence, enriched by committed professionals. Notably, Tan Sri Lee Siew Yee and Tan Sri Abdul Samad Ismail were leading figures in the New Straits Times following its inception and separation from Singapore's Straits Times in 1974, crucially shaping its Malaysian focus. Since then, countless other dedicated individuals — insightful editors, tenacious journalists, gifted photographers and talented illustrators — have poured their hearts into ensuring the NST's voice resonated through the ages. Despite the unprecedented challenges of the digital age, the NST has not only survived but thrived, embracing digital transformation with boldness. This successful transition is largely due to the continuous output of outstanding, award-winning content and the editorial team's commitment to excellence under the guidance of Media Prima Bhd Group Managing Editor Jasbant Singh and NST Group Editor Farrah Naz Karim, who is also MPB deputy group managing editor. My heartiest congratulations to everyone at the NST for preserving this invaluable legacy. This remarkable journey wouldn't be possible without the steadfast support of the NST readers. As we look ahead, the NST, alongside its sister publications Berita Harian and Harian Metro — already the two leading digital news brands in the country — continues to enhance its digital platforms, promising an even more exciting media product for all. The NST's 180-year legacy is more than just history; it's the bedrock upon which its vital voice, influence and innovation will continue to build for the future.

IT outfit MMCS empowers Malaysian youth via strategic CSR initiatives in education and sports

MM Computer Systems Sdn Bhd (MMCS) has re-affirmed its commitment to community engagement and youth empowerment by sponsoring two impactful initiatives aimed at promoting educational enrichment and sports excellence among Malaysian youth. On July 6, the leading IT solutions and services provider through its wholly owned subsidiary Micro Technology Solution Sdn Bhd (MTS) supported the History and Patriotism Quiz Competition at AEON Mall Alpha Angle in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur. This event was intended to encourage secondary school pupils to deepen their understanding of Malaysian history while fostering a sense of national pride and patriotism. MMCS's sponsorship played a crucial role in facilitating this meaningful educational initiative, thus reflecting the company's dedication to nurturing informed and well-rounded future leaders. Further emphasising its commitment to youth development, MMCS contributed RM11,000 to the MBPJ (Petaling Jaya City Council) youth hockey team during the National Youth League event on July 10 at the MBPJ Headquarter. This financial support enabled young athletes to sharpen their skills, strengthen teamwork and showcase their potential at the national level. 'MMCS is committed to investing in our community, particularly in initiatives that support youth development and empowerment,' commented MMCS' director Macken Young. 'We firmly believe that education and sports are powerful tools for developing leadership, teamwork and a deep sense of community responsibility among young Malaysians.' At the end of the day, both initiatives form part of MMCS's broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy which emphasises sustainable impact through meaningful community engagement. By supporting educational and sporting programmes, MMCS continues to empower Malaysian youth to strive for excellence and make positive contributions to society. – July 15, 2025

MSIA: Miti move shows Malaysia's seriousness in complying with international trade obligations

KUALA LUMPUR: The trade permit imposed for US origin high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) chips reaffirms Malaysia's commitment as a trusted hub for managing advanced technology exports, transshipments, and transits. In stating this, Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) president Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai said the measure sent a strong signal of Malaysia's seriousness in complying with international trade obligations, including the US export controls. 'The trade permit makes it clear that the government will not tolerate any abuse of exports, transshipment, or illicit trading,' Wong told Bernama when asked to comment on the current measures announced by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) on Monday. He added that many Malaysian firms have already taken proactive steps, including internal audits, to ensure they adhere to local and global regulations. 'We in Malaysia, both the private sector and government, take this very seriously. We want to make sure everything is fully compliant.' However, Wong said there is a need for greater clarity from the government on specific reporting obligations under the strategic trade permit. 'We need to know what needs to be reported and what constitutes notification to authorities. Once this is clear, companies can incorporate any additional steps needed to meet compliance,' he said. Miti on Monday announced that, effective immediately, all exports, transshipments, and transits of US-origin high-performance AI chips would be subject to a Strategic Trade Permit under Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010 (STA 2010), also known as the Catch-All Control provision. Under the provision, individuals or companies are required to notify authorities at least 30 days in advance if they intend to export, transship, or transit any unlisted item that may be suspected of being misused or involved in restricted activities. Meanwhile, Pacific Research Center of Malaysia principal adviser Oh Ei Sun said the move would not affect local data centre or AI development projects, as it pertains primarily to the transshipment or export of US-made chips, not their import into Malaysia for domestic use. 'I would not say Malaysia's industry lacked transparency before this. But the US is now taking this issue very seriously, and we are acting accordingly because we value our overall relationship with the US,' he said.
