Israel faces criticism after Vatican diplomat barred from sacred Easter event

JERUSALEM: Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, the Apostolic Delegate and Vatican Ambassador to Palestine, was denied entry to the sacred site, drawing strong condemnation from Palestinian Church leaders who described the move as a breach of diplomatic protocols and religious freedom.
Security was tight in the Old City, where Israeli police set up multiple checkpoints and conducted identity checks, turning away large numbers of worshippers.
The restrictions coincided with the Holy Fire ceremony, a central event in the Orthodox Easter calendar that traditionally draws thousands of local and international pilgrims.
Palestinian sources said only 6,000 permits were issued to Christians from the occupied West Bank—far below the estimated 50,000-strong Christian population in the territories.
Access for Palestinian Muslims and Christians to Jerusalem has long been tightly controlled, but this year's limitations were seen as particularly severe.
The Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine said many local Christians, along with foreign pilgrims, were blocked from reaching the church. Human rights groups reported incidents of physical assault and arbitrary arrests of worshippers during the day.
Church leaders accused Israeli authorities of turning a deeply spiritual celebration into a militarized event. They warned that continued restrictions on religious access in Jerusalem undermine fundamental rights and escalate tensions in a region already gripped by conflict.
Celebrations this year were again subdued, with churches limiting activities to liturgical services. Many Christian communities scaled back public processions due to the ongoing war in Gaza and heightened military presence across the occupied West Bank.
Since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, more than 950 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank alone, according to local health authorities.
In a landmark ruling last year, the International Court of Justice declared Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories illegal and called for the withdrawal of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Despite the barriers, Christian pilgrims continue to make their way to Jerusalem, affirming the enduring significance of the Holy Fire ritual and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, revered as the site of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.--LiCAS.news

"Gaza is Dying. And We Die With It': Al Jazeera Pleads to Save Starving, Silenced Journalists

REUTERS/Mahmoud Issa/File Photo KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Al Jazeera Media Network has urgently called upon the journalistic community, press freedom organisations, and relevant legal bodies to take decisive action to halt the forced starvation and crimes against journalists and media professionals in Gaza. The network stressed that the plight of journalists in Gaza has reached a critical point, with many of them risking their lives while facing severe hunger and targeted attacks. Its Director-General, Dr Mostefa Souag, said the international community must act to end the suffering endured by journalists in the besieged enclave. bootstrap slideshow 'We owe it to the courageous journalists in Gaza to amplify their voices and put an end to the unbearable suffering they are enduring due to forced starvation and targeted killings by Israeli occupation forces. 'The journalistic community and the world bear an immense responsibility; it is our duty to raise our voices and mobilise all available means to support our colleagues in this noble profession. 'If we fail to act now, we risk a future where there may be no one left to tell our stories. Our inaction will be recorded in history as a monumental failure to protect our fellow journalists and a betrayal of the principles that every journalist strives to uphold,' he added. For over 21 months, the Israeli bombardment and systematic starvation of nearly two million people in Gaza have pushed the entire population to the brink of survival. Al Jazeera noted that journalists on the ground, who have courageously reported on the ongoing genocide, now find themselves fighting for their own survival. On July 19, Al Jazeera journalists began posting heart-wrenching messages on social media, signalling that their capacity to continue was waning.

IGP: PDRM Detects Cases Suspected To Be Orchestrated By Foreign Intelligence Agencies

CRIME & COURTS KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has identified external threats, believed to be orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies, which could potentially compromise national security. Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, said that among them were two incidents, suspected to be orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies, namely the kidnapping of a Palestinian national and the possession of six firearms by an Israeli national. 'PDRM is always prepared to prevent and address various external threats which could impact national security, including agendas by foreign intelligence agencies which may attempt to interfere with or disrupt the country's stability and sovereignty. 'Various measures have been implemented to monitor the entry of foreigners at all the country's entry points, in close cooperation with the Immigration Department, the Border Control and Protection Agency, and Interpol,' he said, in a statement, today. Mohd Khalid said that the police are also paying close attention to the security of foreigners residing in Malaysia for extended periods, including permanent residents and those in the country for business purposes, such as foreign consultants. On the safety of the Palestinian community in Malaysia, Mohd Khalid urged them to remain vigilant, and avoid attracting public attention. 'To ensure the safety of Palestinians residing in Malaysia, they are advised to maintain a low profile to avoid becoming targets, and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the police,' he said. Mohd Khalid said that PDRM has also established strategic collaborations with other security agencies, through continuous information and intelligence exchanges at both national and international levels. 'PDRM remains committed to safeguarding Malaysia's security, and ensuring the well-being of its people at all times,' he said.

Tunisia leader shows Trump adviser images of starving Gaza children

TUNIS: Tunisian President Kais Saied met with US envoy Massad Boulos, senior Africa adviser to former President Donald Trump, and showed him photographs of starving children in Gaza. The official video of their meeting, released late Tuesday, captured the emotional exchange. Saied told Boulos, who is also the father-in-law of Trump's daughter Tiffany, that 'it is time for all of humanity to wake up and put an end to these crimes against the Palestinian people.' He added, 'I believe you know these images well,' while displaying a photograph of what he described as 'a child crying, eating sand in occupied Palestine.' The Tunisian leader presented multiple images, emphasizing that Palestinians in Gaza were enduring crimes against humanity. Israel faces growing international criticism over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over two million people have suffered through 21 months of conflict. 'It is absolutely unacceptable,' Saied said as Boulos stood silently, occasionally nodding. 'It is a crime against all of humanity.' More than 100 aid organizations recently warned of 'mass starvation' spreading across Gaza, with medical staff reporting that 21 children had died from malnutrition in just three days. Israel maintains that aid is reaching Gaza but accuses Hamas of exploiting civilian suffering, including by diverting food supplies. After his visit to Tunisia, Boulos traveled to Tripoli, Libya, according to Tunisian media reports. - AFP
