Castle Douglas Accordion and Fiddle Club's final meeting of the season was a great success

Daily Record29-04-2025
Castle Douglas Accordion and Fiddle Club's final meeting of the season was a great occasion with so many local players contributing, they had to be rationed to one set each. Steven McWhan from Dumfries opened the show with a fine classical performance on his five row button accordion, and was followed by William Little from Dumfries on his whistle. Stuart Faulds from Dreghorn was next with his accordion, ably assisted by Graham Barbour, who accompanied most of the local players. Jenna Youngman from Kirkgunzeon was next with her accordion, followed by John Cowan from Kirkcudbright with his fiddle. Jimmy Little, all the way from Alnwick in Northumberland, gave a fine set of jigs on his mouth organ and then Newby Park from Carlisle entertained the audience on his accordion. Bob Watson from Torthorwald finished off the local players' first half contribution. The guest artistes were the Frank Morrison Band with Frank Morrison and Cal Smith on accordions, June Meikle and fiddle, Alex Graham on keyboard, Ruth Rintoul on bass fiddle and Billy Goodfellow on drums. This fine sextet provided music that was well balanced, giving a varied selection of tunes from Scotland and many other places which the audience were very appreciative of. After tea and biscuits and the raffle, George Shanks from Castle Douglas led off the local players on his mouth organ, then Graham Barbour and Pauline Swan from Dumfries gave a fine duet performance on their accordions, after which Graham treated us to a superb 'party piece' performance of Blue Suede Shoes. Jim McConnachie from Dumfries then gave a third mouth organ set, surely a very unusual happening for any accordion and fiddle club. The audience then had the pleasure of hearing Elisabeth Morrison from Law, wife of band leader Frank who played second accordion to her, and then Barbara Fisher and John Douglas from Dumfries played an accordion duet. The last of the local players was Tom Killean from Wishaw along with Frank, Alex and Billy from the band on second box, keyboard and drums. A fine afternoon which fully justifies the decision of the local committee to change the timing from Tuesday evenings to Sunday afternoons. There will be a special meeting on Sunday, July 27 to which all interested players and spectators are warmly invited.

McDonald's ‘best burger by far' is finally returning — but there's a big catch

McDonald's customers are in for a treat as the fast food chain is preparing to switch up its menu at the end of the month. For six weeks from July 30 there will be a brand new McFlurry flavour available, plus two 'unmissable' new drinks, and several returning classics – including a burger that's been hailed the 'best by far' by diehard fans. We're talking, of course, about the Big Tasty and Big Tasty with Bacon, which are rarely featured on the menu, despite being incredibly popular. Last sold in 2024, the burgers both feature a beef patty, Emmental cheese, onions, tomatoes and a smoky sauce, all served in a toasted sesame bun, and one has some extra bacon. But there is a bit of a catch… the range won't be available nationwide. The Big Tasty range will only be a regional exclusive in East Anglia from the end of next week. Similarly, those in Tyne & Tees are also getting a special treat, as the Steakhouse Stack will be joining the line up in participating restaurants up north. But before those in these parts of the UK start feeling smug about their bonus items, it's worth noting that they'll be missing out on one other returning product: the Chicken Big Mac. The chicken version of the classic, which features two patties, a slice of cheese, pickles, lettuce and Big Mac sauce, will be back on McDonald's menus everywhere except for East Anglia and Tyne & Tees, for a limited time. But the whole of the UK will be able to enjoy a bunch of other returning fan-favourites, including Spicy Chicken McNuggets served with a Spicy Chilli Dip, the Fajita Chicken One, (a wrap made with creamy fajita sauce, tomato salsa, onions, cheese and lettuce with either crispy or grilled chicken), Chilli Cheese Bites and the Milky Way McFlurry with milk chocolate stars, malt flavoured pieces and a chocolate sauce. Aside from these, there are three brand new items to sip and sink your teeth into in August. McDonald's is going to be shaking up its drinks menu with a bold new way to customise their Sprite Zero drink. For the first time ever, customers will be able to add a pump of fruity syrup to their beverage, choosing from Green Apple or Mango & Passionfruit flavours. And those who want to cool off with an ice cream are going to be able to try a new Jaffa Cakes McFlurry, which sees the vanilla base swirled with chocolate covered shortcake pieces and an orange sauce. The new items being introduced mean we have to say goodbye to some of the current ones. The Chicken Katsu Wrap is being axed, along with the Halloumi Fries, Toffee Apple Pie, Toffee Crisp McFlurry and Cheesy McCrispy. More Trending The Big Arch burger will be sticking around on the menu for a little while longer though, as will the Frank's RedHot Mayo dip and the Squishmallows Happy Meal. Mcdonald's is also introducing a new game on its app, known as Side Missions. For four weeks from July 14, those with the app can play to unlock weekly food offers and a chance to win big prizes including £10,000 in cash, £100 Argos or Virgin Experience Vouchers, cinema tickets and free food. Benidorm tourists given urgent warning resort lure is actually 'a load of rubbish'

Frank - or "The Stag Man" as he is known online - regularly gives tips, tricks and advice to those visiting Benidorm as he lives in the Spanish resort with his "legendary stripper" wife Brits in or heading to Benidorm have been warned about charity scams on the sunny destination's beaches. ‌ Frank - or "The Stag Man" as he is known online - has told his followers Brits are falling for the popular con, which allegedly sees a group of men lie about a "petition" for charities in order to blag cash off people on the beaches. They say the money is going to good causes, such as to help disabled communities, but actually the men pocket the cash, Frank says in his video. ‌ The clip on Instagram has been viewed more than one million times and fans have left comments, thanking Frank for giving them the heads-up before their trip to the Alicante resort. Others have warned tourists similar scams are happening elsewhere, such as Tenerife. ‌ In the footage, Frank, dubbed the "King of Benidorm", says: "They're jumping on everyone, look," as he films a group of men holding clipboards. He explains: "And then once they've done that, they'll be looking at what's in your wallet to rob you later." The travel agent and bar owner, originally from Tottenham, north London, films various tourists being approached by these men. Frank's wife Jade films Frank himself, as he swiftly brushes the men off. ‌ Frank, 54, continues: "What you've just seen there is one of the scams that runs along the beach [...] it's kind of out of sight, out of mind... The way it works is this: normally, what they'll do is they'll say to you, for example, it's a petition and they ask you to sign it. Once you sign it, then they start pushing you for a donation." Jade, described in previous videos as Benidorm's "most legendary stripper", adds: "They'll say 'it's for the blind, it's for the disabled, for petitioning to get something sorted here in Spain' it's all a load of rubbish." ‌ Frank ends the video saying: "[They're] scamming and they will take your money. Some people even get their wallets out and give them a few quid and then once you've done that, then they know." As Luxury Travel Daily reports, social media users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions. One man said: "Benidorm is getting bad now, that's my opinion." Another posted: "I had this scam done to me and my partner luckily we had no cash on us." A further post reads: "Coming tomorrow for first time with misses. I'm more clued up thanks to this." Another tourist reacted with: "It's happening in Tenerife as well." The warning comes after footage captured a massive brawl break out by the swimming pool at a hotel in Benidorm recently. Punches were thrown in the ugly scenes this month.

Football legend Frank McAvennie gets behind women's football team in shirt deal

The former St Mirren, Celtic, West Ham and Scotland striker's podcast Let Me Be Frank has backed Hamilton Academical WFC with a season long shirt deal. Scottish football legend Frank McAvennie has turned his attention to the ladies once more, this time by sponsoring a women's football team. ‌ The former St Mirren, Celtic, West Ham and Scotland striker's podcast Let Me Be Frank has backed Hamilton Academical WFC with a season long shirt deal. ‌ Macca, who hosts the Let Me Be Frank podcast alongside journalist pal Simon Houston, said: 'Anything I can do to help the ladies. ‌ 'I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to support the Accies Women's team like this. "It's no secret that in the past I wasn't the biggest fan of women's football and didn't watch a lot of it, but fair's fair. I have become a convert and I have been massively impressed with some of the games I have watched.' The Accies Women's team are set to play in the top flight next season alongside other SWPL1 clubs after becoming SWPL2 Champions for 2024/25. Frank, 65, said: 'Hamilton did incredibly well last season and now they are back in the top flight and I'm thrilled that our logo will be on their shorts as they go for more glory. 'I knew some of the people who work for charities at Hamilton and have known the men's side for years. I've been going to see them for years. 'It gives the podcast a wee lift as well.' ‌ Frank, who was at New Douglas Park this week to meet some of the players and hand over a cheque for £1,000, made a name for himself as a top scorer in both the Scottish top flight and in England. His reputation for scoring stretched to the ladies, prompting comedian and TV producer to lampoon Frank in the television series Only An Excuse with the catchphrase, 'Where's ra burds?' ‌ Frank said: 'A lot of my mates are poking fun telling me that I was very much a fan of the ladies back in the day, so I'm expecting a bit of a ribbing. But I can take it. Some of Phil's sketches have been hilarious. It was all good fun. "But in all seriousness, I'm delighted at the massive increase in profile that the women's game has enjoyed, not just in Scotland but all over the world. ‌ "I've been watching a lot of the Euros which are on at the moment and it's just a pity the Scottish team didn't make it to Switzerland. Let's hope they can be back on the big stage soon.' Frank, who enjoyed top flight football in the 1980s and 1990s, added: 'It would be great to see some of the Hamilton team showcasing their talents on the world stage. ‌ "We will give our podcast followers regular updates on their scores as the new season progresses." Frank has also promised to cheer the Accies women's team from the stands when they play upcoming matches against Partick Thistle and Celtic. He said: 'Women's football has taken off and it has got to a stage where women's games are filling stadiums. ‌ 'You have got to be happy with the way they have got the leagues together and the clubs have bought into it. There are some decent players.' Hamilton Academical WFC manager Robert Watson added: "This is a magnificent boost for the team. "We are absolutely delighted to have the Let Me Be Frank podcast sponsoring our shorts for the upcoming season. ‌ "This will be one of the biggest seasons in the team's history after returning to the top flight of Scottish women's football. "We couldn't do what we do without the support of people like Frank. We are not full-time so every penny we receive is really important and extremely helpful." The Let Me Be Frank podcast regularly boasts top guests. Past shows have included chats with everybody from Rod Stewart to Ray Winstone. Frank said: 'The podcast is about letting people talk. Every time we have someone in we have a story that we haven't heard. It's great because normally I would ask a question then answer it, but Simon has taught me to keep quiet and let people speak for themselves and it has been a joy to talk to everybody from Scott Brown about his time at Celtic to Rod because you can't get much bigger than that.'
