‘Disturbing': Mrs Doubtfire star's wild plan to revive Robin Williams with AI despite daughter

News.com.au3 days ago
It's been 32 years since Mrs Doubtfire graced our screens.
Now, the actor who played Chris Hillard wishes to resurrect his late co-star, the legendary Robin Williams, in a very 2025 way.
Matthew Lawrence wants Williams to be the trusty voice reading out the weather on our smart speakers. He told Entertainment Weekly that the actor should be the next 'voice of AI.'
'I would love — now, obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family — but I would love to do something really special with his voice because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic.'
'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him, and so it's in my head — it's in everybody's head. And it would be so cool.'
The idea came to Lawrence after watching one of Williams' old commercials. The actor, who died by suicide in 2014 at age 63, had done a computerised voiceover that Lawrence found eerily ahead of its time.
'It's kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what's going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerised voiceover,' he explains.
'And it always stuck with me. And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of A.I. He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that.'
There's no denying Williams' voice is instantly recognisable. Hearing it again would likely spark nostalgia and joy for many.
Still, using AI in a project like this raises serious concerns.
Lawrence, clearly enthusiastic, suggested plenty of possibilities for Robin's voice in tech — even using it for driving navigation.
'It would be Robin!' Lawrence happily stated. 'It would be so cool. I'm telling you.'
Yelling at Siri or Alexa when you miss a turn is normal these days. But yelling at the voice of Robin Williams might come with some follow-up guilt.
William's daughter, Zelda Williams, has publicly slammed AI recreations of her father.
During the SAG-AFTRA strike in October 2023, she posted a statement on social media expressing her discomfort with the technology.
'I am not an impartial voice in SAG's fight against AI,' Zelda, 35, wrote. 'I've witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad.'
'I've already heard AI used to get his 'voice' to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings,' she continued.
'Living actors deserve a chance to create characters with their choices, to voice cartoons, to put their HUMAN effort and time into the pursuit of performance.'
Lawrence was just a pre-teen when he played Williams' son in 1993's Mrs. Doubtfire, and their relationship clearly made a lasting impression.
At the first annual '90s Con in 2022, Lawrence shared how Williams — who struggled with substance abuse — warned him about the dangers of drugs during filming.
'[Williams] was very serious. He was like, 'You know when you come to my trailer and you see me like that?'' Lawrence shared.
'He's like, 'That's the reason why. And now I'm fighting for the rest of my life because I spent 10 years doing something very stupid every day. Do not do it.' I stayed away from it because of him.'
In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence reflected on two key lessons Williams taught him: the importance of compassion, and not judging others without walking in their shoes.
'He really quantified what it was to be a real artist for me in the sense that he was definitely,' Lawrence said, 'and I worked with some great people, and he was definitely the most brilliant artist I've ever worked with.'

And Just Like That: Huge announcement about SATC reboot's future

And Just Like That … the Sex and the City reboot is wrapping up. The series will come to an end with the two-part finale of the third season, which is currently airing. Ten episodes have been released, and the twelfth will be its last, as showrunner Michael Patrick King confirmed on Friday, US time. The cast – excluding lead star Sarah Jessica Parker, who also serves as an executive producer – was told just one day earlier, according to Deadline. 'And just like that … the ongoing storytelling of the Sex And The City universe is coming to an end,' said King in a message posted to Instagram. 'While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That … season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop. Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. 'SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn't want the word 'final' to overshadow the fun of watching the season. It's with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.' Following the release of King's statement, Parker took to Instagram with an emotional tribute to the character she's played for almost three decades, sharing a monstage of clips and a lengthy poem. 'Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,' the actress wrote. 'I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion. Therefore the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt. To you all.' Parker went on to describe her work on the reboot as a 'joy, adventure, the greatest kind of hard work', and credited the cast and crew as being 'the most extraordinary talent of 380 that includes all the brilliant actors who joined us.' The sequel to the hugely popular original Sex and the City series, which ran from 1998 until 2004 and later featured two films, premiered in December 2021. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis all reprised their roles in And Just Like That, although Kim Cattrall declined to take part following her widely-publicised feud with Parker. The new series also starred Sarita Choudhury and Nicole Ari Parker, along with original SATC supporting cast members including Chris Noth (albeit for one episode), David Eigenberg, John Corbett, Mario Cantone and Evan Handler. The first season saw Carrie (Parker) grappling to rebuild her life after the sudden death of her husband and longtime love, Mr. Big (Noth), while Miranda (Nixon) explored her sexuality with non-binary comedian Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) amid the demise of her marriage to Steve (Eigenberg). Season two romantically reunited Carrie with Aidan (Corbett), her ex-boyfriend from the original series, Charlotte (Davis) navigated family challenges, and Miranda moved to LA to be with Che, where things quickly between them quickly fell apart. The current run of episodes has seen NYC-based Carrie and Aidan struggle to stay together as he deals with his son's issues back in Virginia, and as she gets closer to her neighbour, a British author.

History of Broadway

Greg Jenner is joined in 20th-Century New York by Dr Hannah Thuraisingam Robbins and comedian Desiree Burch to learn about the history of Broadway. But whether or not you know your Rodgers & Hammerstein from your Lloyd Webber, the history of Broadway is perhaps more of a mystery. This episode explores all aspects of musical theatre, from its origins in the early years of the 20th Century, to the 'Golden Age' in the 50s and the rise of the megamusical in the 80s. Along the way, Greg and his guests learn about the racial and class dynamics of Broadway, uncover musical flops and triumphs, and find out exactly what 'cheating out' is.

Anthony Hopkins pokes fun at Kim Kardashian's new Hannibal-esque Skims face mask

Anthony Hopkins jokingly compared Kim Kardashian's new Skims facelift mask to the one he wore in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs. The actor, 87, took to his Instagram on Friday to share a video of himself sporting a head mask, saying, 'Hello Kim, I'm already feeling 10 years younger. Goodbye.' He then recreated his famous 'fava beans and Chianti' slurping noise, as he widened his eyes and slightly grinned. 'Thank you, Kim. Don't be afraid to come over for dinner,' the Hannibal star captioned the clip, tagging Kardashian, 44, and her clothing brand. Several fans applauded Hopkins' dark humour, with one commenting, 'Are you having Kim for dinner???' Another added, 'Great actor with a great sense of humour!' Others hoped that Kardashian would reply to the cheeky post, saying, 'This is the best publicity you could get @kimkardashian ! lol. You have to reply. This is so epic!' Reps for the businesswoman weren't immediately available to Page Six for comment. Earlier this week, Kardashian released her Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap ($88), made with sculpting fabric to shape your jaw. While some people were intrigued by the contraption, others joked that the Kardashians star designed the wrap 'because we all can't afford face lifts.' 'This is getting weird, how are we normalising this,' another said. 'We're not going to make it, are we? Humans I mean,' a fan quipped. Kardashian is known for releasing unique products, including her iconic nipple bra last year. She also dropped butt-enhancing shorts in January and the hip-enchancing shorts in June. 'I love being able to push boundaries and bring humour to our campaigns,' the TV personality said in a press release, saying she loves showing people how to look and feel their best.
